NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Et factum est deinceps, et ipse iter faciebat per civitatem et ca stellumpraedicans et evangelizans regnum Dei; et Duodecim cum illo1 Now it happened that after this he made his way through towns and villages preaching and proclaimingthe good news of the kingdom of God. With him went the Twelve,
et mulieresaliquae, quae erant curatae ab spiritibus malignis et infirmitatibus: Maria, quae vocatur Magdalene, de qua daemonia septem exierant,2 as wel as certain women who had been cured of evil spirits and ailments: Mary surnamed theMagdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
Joanna the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out oftheir own resources.
Cum autem turba plurima conveniret, et de singulis civitatibus properarent adeum, dixit per similitudinem:4 With a large crowd gathering and people from every town finding their way to him, he told this parable:
“ Exiit, qui seminat, seminare semen suum. Etdum seminat ipse, aliud cecidit secus viam et conculcatum est, et volucres caelicomederunt illud.5 'A sower went out to sow his seed. Now as he sowed, some fel on the edge of the path and wastrampled on; and the birds of the air ate it up.
Et aliud cecidit super petram et natum aruit, quia nonhabebat umorem.6 Some seed fell on rock, and when it came up it withered away, having no moisture.
Et aliud cecidit inter spinas, et simul exortae spinaesuffocaverunt illud.7 Some seed fell in the middle of thorns and the thorns grew with it and choked it.
Et aliud cecidit in terram bonam et ortum fecit fructumcentuplum ”. Haec dicens clamabat: “ Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat ”.
And some seed fell into good soil and grew and produced its crop a hundredfold.' Saying this he cried,'Anyone who has ears for listening should listen!'
His disciples asked him what this parable might mean,
and he said, 'To you is granted to understand the secrets of the kingdom of God; for the rest it remainsin parables, so that they may look but not perceive, listen but not understand.
This, then, is what the parable means: the seed is the word of God.
Those on the edge of the path are people who have heard it, and then the devil comes and carriesaway the word from their hearts in case they should believe and be saved.
Those on the rock are people who, when they first hear it, welcome the word with joy. But these haveno root; they believe for a while, and in time of trial they give up.
As for the part that fell into thorns, this is people who have heard, but as they go on their way they arechoked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life and never produce any crops.
As for the part in the rich soil, this is people with a noble and generous heart who have heard the wordand take it to themselves and yield a harvest through their perseverance.
Nemo autem lucernam accendens operit eam vaso aut subtus lectum ponit, sedsupra candelabrum ponit, ut intrantes videant lumen.16 'No one lights a lamp to cover it with a bowl or to put it under a bed. No, it is put on a lamp-stand sothat people may see the light when they come in.
For nothing is hidden but it will be made clear, nothing secret but it will be made known and brought tolight.
So take care how you listen; anyone who has, wil be given more; anyone who has not, wil bedeprived even of what he thinks he has.'
His mother and his brothers came looking for him, but they could not get to him because of the crowd.
Et nuntiatum est illi: “ Mater tua et fratres tui stant forisvolentes te videre ”.20 He was told, 'Your mother and brothers are standing outside and want to see you.'
But he said in answer, 'My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it intopractice.'
Et ascenderunt.22 It happened that one day he got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, 'Let us cross over tothe other side of the lake.' So they set out,
Navigantibus autem illis, obdormivit. Et descendit procella venti in stagnum, etcomplebantur et periclitabantur.23 and as they sailed he fel asleep. When a squall of wind came down on the lake the boat startedshipping water and they found themselves in danger.
Accedentes autem suscitaverunt eum dicentes:“ Praeceptor, praeceptor, perimus! ”. At ille surgens increpavit ventum ettempestatem aquae, et cessaverunt, et facta est tranquillitas.24 So they went to rouse him saying, 'Master! Master! We are lost!' Then he woke up and rebuked thewind and the rough water; and they subsided and it was calm again.
Dixit autemillis: “ Ubi est fides vestra? ”. ”.
He said to them, 'Where is your faith?' They were awestruck and astounded and said to one another,'Who can this be, that gives orders even to winds and waves and they obey him?'
They came to land in the territory of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.
He was stepping ashore when a man from the city who was possessed by devils came towards him;for a long time the man had been living with no clothes on, not in a house, but in the tombs.
Obsecro te, ne me torqueas ”.28 Catching sight of Jesus he gave a shout, fel at his feet and cried out at the top of his voice, 'What doyou want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? I implore you, do not torture me.'
Praecipiebat enim spiritui immundo, ut exiretab homine. Multis enim temporibus arripiebat illum, vinciebatur catenis etcompedibus custoditus; et ruptis vinculis, agebatur a daemonio in deserta.29 For Jesus had been tel ing the unclean spirit to come out of the man. It had seized on him a greatmany times, and then they used to secure him with chains and fetters to restrain him, but he would always breakthe fastenings, and the devil would drive him out into the wilds.
”. At illedixit: “ Legio ”, quia intraverunt daemonia multa in eum.30 Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?' He said, 'Legion' -- because many devils had gone into him.
Et rogabanteum, ne imperaret illis, ut in abyssum irent.
And these begged him not to order them to depart into the Abyss.
Et permisit illis.32 Now there was a large herd of pigs feeding there on the mountain, and the devils begged him to letthem go into these. So he gave them leave.
Exierunt ergodaemonia ab homine et intraverunt in porcos, et impetu abiit grex per praecepsin stagnum et suffocatus est.33 The devils came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd charged down the cliff into thelake and was drowned.
Quod ut viderunt factum, qui pascebant,fugerunt et nuntiaverunt in civitatem et in villas.34 When the swineherds saw what had happened they ran off and told their story in the city and in thecountry round about;
Exierunt autem videre, quod factum est, et venerunt ad Iesum et invenerunt hominem sedentem, a quodaemonia exierant, vestitum ac sana mente ad pedes Iesu et timuerunt.35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus they found the manfrom whom the devils had gone out sitting at the feet of Jesus, wearing clothes and in his right mind; and theywere afraid.
Those who had witnessed it told them how the man who had been possessed came to be saved.
Ipse autemascendens navem reversus est.37 The entire population of the Gerasene territory was in great fear and asked Jesus to leave them. So hegot into the boat and went back.
Dimisit autem eum dicens:38 The man from whom the devils had gone out asked to be al owed to stay with him, but he sent himaway saying,
“ Redi domum tuam et narraquanta tibi fecit Deus ”. Et abiit per universam civitatem praedicans quantailli fecisset Iesus.
'Go back home and report al that God has done for you.' So the man went off and proclaimedthroughout the city al that Jesus had done for him.
On his return Jesus was welcomed by the crowd, for they were al there waiting for him.
And suddenly there came a man named Jairus, who was president of the synagogue. He fel at Jesus'feet and pleaded with him to come to his house,
quia filia unicaerat illi fere annorum duodecim, et haec moriebatur. Et dum iret, a turbiscomprimebatur.42 because he had an only daughter about twelve years old, who was dying. And the crowds were almoststifling Jesus as he went.
Et mulier quaedam erat in fluxu sanguinis ab annis duodecim, quae in medicos erogaverat omnem substantiam suam nec ab ullo potuit curari;43 Now there was a woman suffering from a haemorrhage for the past twelve years, whom no one hadbeen able to cure.
She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak; and the haemorrhage stopped at thatvery moment.
”. Negantibusautem omnibus, dixit Petrus: “ Praeceptor, turbae te comprimunt et affligunt”.45 Jesus said, 'Who was it that touched me?' When they al denied it, Peter said, 'Master, it is the crowdsround you, pushing.'
At dixit Iesus: “ Tetigit me aliquis; nam et ego novi virtutem de meexisse ”.46 But Jesus said, 'Somebody touched me. I felt that power had gone out from me.'
Videns autem mulier quia non latuit, tremens venit et prociditante eum et ob quam causam tetigerit eum indicavit coram omni populo etquemadmodum confestim sanata sit.47 Seeing herself discovered, the woman came forward trembling, and fal ing at his feet explained in frontof al the people why she had touched him and how she had been cured at that very moment.
At ipse dixit illi: “ Filia, fides tua tesalvam fecit. Vade in pace ”.
'My daughter,' he said, 'your faith has saved you; go in peace.'
Adhuc illo loquente, venit quidam e domo principis synagogae dicens: “Mortua est filia tua; noli amplius vexare magistrum ”.49 While he was stil speaking, someone arrived from the house of the president of the synagogue to say,'Your daughter has died. Do not trouble the Master any further.'
Iesus autem, auditohoc verbo, respondit ei: “ Noli timere; crede tantum, et salva erit ”.50 But Jesus heard this, and he spoke to the man, 'Do not be afraid, only have faith and she wil besaved.'
Etcum venisset domum, non permisit intrare secum quemquam nisi Petrum et Ioannemet Iacobum et patrem puellae et matrem.51 When he came to the house he al owed no one to go in with him except Peter and John and James, and the child's father and mother.
Flebant autem omnes et plangebantillam. At ille dixit: “ Nolite flere; non est enim mortua, sed dormit ”.52 They were all crying and mourning for her, but Jesus said, 'Stop crying; she is not dead, but asleep.'
Et deridebant eum scientes quia mortua esset.53 But they ridiculed him, knowing she was dead.
Ipse autem tenens manum eiusclamavit dicens: “ Puella, surge! ”.54 But taking her by the hand himself he spoke to her, 'Child, get up.'
And her spirit returned and she got up at that very moment. Then he told them to give her something toeat.
Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tel anyone what had happened.
