1 וידבר יהוה אל משה במדבר סיני באהל מועד באחד לחדש השני בשנה השנית לצאתם מארץ מצרים לאמר	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, in the desert of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the secondmonth, in the second year after the exodus from Egypt, and said:
2 שאו את ראש כל עדת בני ישראל למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות כל זכר לגלגלתם	2 'Take a census of the whole community of Israelites by clans and families, taking a count of the namesof al the males, head by head.
3 מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא בישראל תפקדו אתם לצבאתם אתה ואהרן	3 You and Aaron wil register al those in Israel, twenty years of age and over, fit to bear arms, companyby company;
4 ואתכם יהיו איש איש למטה איש ראש לבית אבתיו הוא	4 you wil have one man from each tribe, the head of his family, to help you.
5 ואלה שמות האנשים אשר יעמדו אתכם לראובן אליצור בן שדיאור	5 'These are the names of those who must help you: For Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.
6 לשמעון שלמיאל בן צורישדי	6 For Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.
7 ליהודה נחשון בן עמינדב	7 For Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab.
8 ליששכר נתנאל בן צוער	8 For Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar.
9 לזבולן אליאב בן חלן	9 For Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon.
10 לבני יוסף לאפרים אלישמע בן עמיהוד למנשה גמליאל בן פדהצור	10 Of the sons of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son ofPedahzur.
11 לבנימן אבידן בן גדעני	11 For Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni.
12 לדן אחיעזר בן עמישדי	12 For Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.
13 לאשר פגעיאל בן עכרן	13 For Asher, Pagiel son of Ochran.
14 לגד אליסף בן דעואל	14 For Gad, Eliasaph son of Reuel.
15 לנפתלי אחירע בן עינן	15 For Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.'
16 אלה קריאי העדה נשיאי מטות אבותם ראשי אלפי ישראל הם	16 These were men of repute in the community; they were the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the headsof Israel's thousands.
17 ויקח משה ואהרן את האנשים האלה אשר נקבו בשמות	17 Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named
18 ואת כל העדה הקהילו באחד לחדש השני ויתילדו על משפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה לגלגלתם	18 and on the first day of the second month they mustered the whole community. The Israelitesestablished their pedigrees by clans and families, and one by one the names of all men of twenty years and overwere recorded.
19 כאשר צוה יהוה את משה ויפקדם במדבר סיני	19 As Yahweh had ordered, Moses registered them in the desert of Sinai.
20 ויהיו בני ראובן בכר ישראל תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות לגלגלתם כל זכר מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	20 Once the pedigrees of the descendants of Reuben, Israel's first-born, had been established by clansand families, the names of all the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
21 פקדיהם למטה ראובן ששה וארבעים אלף וחמש מאות	21 The total of these for the tribe of Reuben was forty-six thousand five hundred.
22 לבני שמעון תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם פקדיו במספר שמות לגלגלתם כל זכר מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	22 Once the pedigrees of Simeon's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
23 פקדיהם למטה שמעון תשעה וחמשים אלף ושלש מאות	23 The total of these for the tribe of Simeon was fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
24 לבני גד תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	24 Once the pedigrees of Gad's descendants had been established by clans and families, the names ofal the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
25 פקדיהם למטה גד חמשה וארבעים אלף ושש מאות וחמשים	25 The total of these for the tribe of Gad was forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.
26 לבני יהודה תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	26 Once the pedigrees of Judah's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
27 פקדיהם למטה יהודה ארבעה ושבעים אלף ושש מאות	27 The total of these for the tribe of Judah was seventy-four thousand six hundred.
28 לבני יששכר תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	28 Once the pedigrees of Issachar's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
29 פקדיהם למטה יששכר ארבעה וחמשים אלף וארבע מאות	29 The total of these for the tribe of Issachar was fifty-four thousand four hundred.
30 לבני זבולן תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	30 Once the pedigrees of Zebulun's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
31 פקדיהם למטה זבולן שבעה וחמשים אלף וארבע מאות	31 The total of these for the tribe of Zebulun was fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
32 לבני יוסף לבני אפרים תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	32 As regards the descendants of Joseph: once the pedigrees of Ephraim's descendants had beenestablished by clans and families, the names of all the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, wererecorded one by one.
33 פקדיהם למטה אפרים ארבעים אלף וחמש מאות	33 The total of these for the tribe of Ephraim was forty thousand five hundred.
34 לבני מנשה תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	34 Once the pedigrees of Manasseh's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
35 פקדיהם למטה מנשה שנים ושלשים אלף ומאתים	35 The total of these for the tribe of Manasseh was thirty-two thousand two hundred.
36 לבני בנימן תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	36 Once the pedigrees of Benjamin's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
37 פקדיהם למטה בנימן חמשה ושלשים אלף וארבע מאות	37 The total of these for the tribe of Benjamin was thirty-five thousand four hundred.
38 לבני דן תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	38 Once the pedigrees of Dan's descendants had been established by clans and families, the names ofal the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
39 פקדיהם למטה דן שנים וששים אלף ושבע מאות	39 The total of these for the tribe of Dan was sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
40 לבני אשר תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	40 Once the pedigrees of Asher's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
41 פקדיהם למטה אשר אחד וארבעים אלף וחמש מאות	41 The total of these for the tribe of Asher was forty-one thousand five hundred.
42 בני נפתלי תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא	42 Once the pedigrees of Naphtali's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
43 פקדיהם למטה נפתלי שלשה וחמשים אלף וארבע מאות	43 The total of these for the tribe of Naphtali was fifty-three thousand four hundred.
44 אלה הפקדים אשר פקד משה ואהרן ונשיאי ישראל שנים עשר איש איש אחד לבית אבתיו היו	44 Such were the men registered by Moses, Aaron and the leaders of Israel, of whom there were twelve,each representing his family.
45 ויהיו כל פקודי בני ישראל לבית אבתם מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא בישראל	45 Al the Israelites of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were counted by families.
46 ויהיו כל הפקדים שש מאות אלף ושלשת אלפים וחמש מאות וחמשים	46 Altogether, the total came to six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.
47 והלוים למטה אבתם לא התפקדו בתוכם	47 But the Levites and their tribes were not included in the count.
48 וידבר יהוה אל משה לאמר	48 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
49 אך את מטה לוי לא תפקד ואת ראשם לא תשא בתוך בני ישראל	49 'Do not, however, take a census of the Levites, or register them with the other Israelites,
50 ואתה הפקד את הלוים על משכן העדת ועל כל כליו ועל כל אשר לו המה ישאו את המשכן ואת כל כליו והם ישרתהו וסביב למשכן יחנו	50 but enrol the Levites to take charge of the Dwel ing where the Testimony is and of al its furnishingsand belongings. They must carry the Dwel ing and al its furnishings; they must look after the Dwel ing and pitchtheir camp round it.
51 ובנסע המשכן יורידו אתו הלוים ובחנת המשכן יקימו אתו הלוים והזר הקרב יומת	51 Whenever the Dwelling is moved, the Levites will dismantle it; whenever the Dwel ing stops for thenight, the Levites wil erect it. Any unauthorised person coming near it will be put to death.
52 וחנו בני ישראל איש על מחנהו ואיש על דגלו לצבאתם	52 The Israelites wil pitch their tents, each in their own encampment and by their own standard,company by company,
53 והלוים יחנו סביב למשכן העדת ולא יהיה קצף על עדת בני ישראל ושמרו הלוים את משמרת משכן העדות	53 but the Levites wil pitch their tents round the Dwel ing where the Testimony is. In this way Retributionwil be kept from fal ing on the whole community of Israelites, and the Levites wil keep charge of the Dwel ing ofthe Testimony.'
54 ויעשו בני ישראל ככל אשר צוה יהוה את משה כן עשו	54 The Israelites did exactly as Yahweh had ordered Moses. They did as he said.
