| 1 E avvenne, che essendo egli in un luogo a fare orazione, finito che ebbe, uno dei suoi discepoli gli disse: Signore, insegnaci ad orare, come anche Giovanni insegnò a' suoi discepoli. | 1 He was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." |
| 2 Ed egli disse loro: Quando farete orazione, dite: Padre, sia santificato il nome tuo. Venga il tuo regno. | 2 And he said to them, "When you pray, say: "Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. |
| 3 Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano. | 3 Give us each day our daily bread; |
| 4 E rimettici i nostri debiti; mentre anche noi li rimettiamo a chiunque è a noi debitore. E non c'indurre in tentazione. | 4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation." |
| 5 E disse loro: Chi di voi avrà un amico, e anderà da lui a mezzanotte, dicendogli: Amico, prestami tre pani, | 5 And he said to them, "Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; |
| 6 Perché un amico mio è arrivato di viaggio a mia casa, e non ho niente da dargli; | 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; |
| 7 E quegli rispondendo di dentro, dica: Non mi inquietare: la porta è già chiusa, e i miei figliuoli sono coricati meco, non posso levarmi per darteli. | 7 and he will answer from within, 'Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything?' |
| 8 Se quegli continuerà a picchiare: vi dico, che quand'anche non si levasse a darglieli per la ragione, che quegli è un suo amico, si leverà almeno a motivo della sua importunità, e gliene darà, quanti gliene bisogna. | 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him whatever he needs. |
| 9 E io dico a voi: Chiedete, e vi sarà dato: Cercate, e troverete: Picchiate, e saravvi aperto. | 9 And I tell you, Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. |
| 10 Imperocché chi chiede, riceve: e chi cerca, trova: e a chi picchia, sarà aperto. | 10 For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. |
| 11 E se al padre domanda un figliuolo tra voi del pane, gli darà egli un sasso? E se un pesce: gli darà egli forse in cambio del pesce una serpe? | 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; |
| 12 E se chiederà un uovo: gli darà egli uno scorpione? | 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? |
| 13 Se adunque voi, che siete cattivi, sapete del bene dato a voi far parte a' vostri figliuoli: quanto più il Padre vostro celeste darà lo spirito buono a coloro, che gliel domandano? | 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" |
| 14 E stava cacciando un demonio, il quale era mutolo. E cacciato che ebbe il demonio, il mutolo parlò, e le turbe ne restarono maravigliate. | 14 Now he was casting out a demon that was dumb; when the demon had gone out, the dumb man spoke, and the people marveled. |
| 15 Ma certuni di loro dissero: Egli caccia i demonj per virtù di Beelzebub principe de demonj. | 15 But some of them said, "He casts out demons by Be-elzebul, the prince of demons"; |
| 16 E altri per tentarlo gli chiedevano un segno dal cielo. | 16 while others, to test him, sought from him a sign from heaven. |
| 17 Ma egli avendo scorti i loro pensieri, disse loro: Qualunque regno incontrarj partiti diviso va in perdizione, e una casa divisa in fazioni va in rovina. | 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. |
| 18 Che se anche Satana è in discordia seco stesso, come sussisterà il suo regno? conciossiachè voi dite, che in virtù di Beelzebub io caccio i demonj. | 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Be-elzebul. |
| 19 Che se io caccio i demonj per virtù di Beelzebub: per virtù di chi li cacciano i vostri figliuoli? Per questo saranno essi vostri giudici. | 19 And if I cast out demons by Be-elzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. |
| 20 Che se io col dito di Dio caccio i demonj: certamente è venuto a voi il regno di Dio. | 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. |
| 21 Quando il campione armato custodisce la sua casa, è in sicuro tutto quel, che egli possiede. | 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace; |
| 22 Ma se un altro più forte di lui gli va sopra, e lo vince, si porta via tutte le sue armi, nelle quali egli poneva sua fidanza, e ne spartisce le spoglie. | 22 but when one stronger than he assails him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoil. |
| 23 Chi non è meco, è contro di me: e chi meco non raccoglie, dissipa. | 23 He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. |
| 24 Quando lo spirito immondo è uscito da un uomo, cammina per luoghi deserti, cercando requie: e non trovandola dice: Ritornerò alla casa mia, donde sono uscito. | 24 "When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places seeking rest; and finding none he says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' |
| 25 E andatovi, la trova spazzata, e adorna. | 25 And when he comes he finds it swept and put in order. |
| 26 Allora va, e seco prende sette altri spiriti peggiori di lui, ed entrano ad abitarvi. E la fine di un tal uomo è peggiore del principio. | 26 Then he goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first." |
| 27 E avvenne, che mentre egli tali cose diceva, alzò la voce una donna di mezzo alle turbe, e gli disse: Beato il seno, che ti ha portato, e le mammelle, che hai succhiate. | 27 As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!" |
| 28 Ma egli disse: Anzi beati coloro, che ascoltano la parola di Dio, e l'osservano. | 28 But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" |
| 29 E affollandosi intorno a lui le torbe, cominciò a dire: Questa generazione è una perversa generazione: domanda un segno; ma segno non saralle concesso, fuori di quello di Giona profeta. | 29 When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. |
| 30 Imperocché siccome Giona fu un segno pe' Niniviti: così il Figliuolo dell'uomo sarà un segno per questa generazione. | 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nineveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation. |
| 31 La regina del mezzogiorno si leverà suso nel giudizio contro gli uomini di questa generazione, e li condannerà: perché ella venne dalle estreme parti della terra per udir la sapienza di Salomone: ed ecco qui più che Salomone. | 31 The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. |
| 32 I Niniviti si leveranno suso nel giudizio contro di questa generazione, e la condanneranno: perché essi fecero penitenza alla predicazione di Giona, ed ecco qui più che Giona. | 32 The men of Nineveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. |
| 33 Nessuno, accesa che ha la lampana, la pone in un nascondiglio, o sotto il moggio; ma sopra il candeliere, affinchè chi entra, vegga lume. | 33 "No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a bushel, but on a stand, that those who enter may see the light. |
| 34 La lampana del tuo corpo è il tuo occhio. Se il tuo occhio sarà semplice, tutto il tuo corpo sarà illuminato: se poi (l' occhio) sarà cattivo, tutto il tuo corpo sarà tenebroso. | 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is sound, your whole body is full of light; but when it is not sound, your body is full of darkness. |
| 35 Bada adunque, che il lume, che è in te, non sia buio. | 35 Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. |
| 36 Se adunque il tuo corpo sarà tutto illuminato, senza aver parte alcuna ottenebrata, il tutto sarà luminoso, e quasi splendente lampana ti rischiarerà. | 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light." |
| 37 E quando egli ebbe parlato, un Fariseo lo pregò, che andasse a pranzo da lui. Ed entrato (in casa) si pose a tavola. | 37 While he was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him; so he went in and sat at table. |
| 38 Ma il Fariseo cominciò a pensare, e discorrere dentro di se, per qual ragione egli non si fosse purificato prima di pranzare. | 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. |
| 39 E il Signore gli disse; Ora voi, o Farisei, lavate il di fuori del bicchiere, e del piatto: ma il vostro di dentro è pieno di rapine, e iniquità. | 39 And the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of extortion and wickedness. |
| 40 Stolti, chi ha fatto il di fuori, non ha egli fatto anche il di dentro? | 40 You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? |
| 41 Fate anzi limosina di quel, che vi avanza: e tutto sarà puro per voi. | 41 But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, everything is clean for you. |
| 42 Ma guai a voi, o Farisei, che pagate la decima della menta, e della ruta, e di tutte le civaie, e non fate caso della, giustizia, e della carità di Dio: or bisognava praticar queste, e non omettere quell'altre cose. | 42 "But woe to you Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. |
| 43 Guai a voi, o Farisei, perché amate i primi posti nelle sinagoghe, e di essere salutati nelle piazze. | 43 Woe to you Pharisees! for you love the best seat in the synagogues and salutations in the market places. |
| 44 Guai a voi, perché siete, come i sepolcri, che non compajono, e que', che sopra vi passano, non li ravvisano. | 44 Woe to you! for you are like graves which are not seen, and men walk over them without knowing it." |
| 45 Ma uno de' dottori della legge gli rispose, e disse: Maestro, cosi parlando offendi anche noi. | 45 One of the lawyers answered him, "Teacher, in saying this you reproach us also." |
| 46 Ma egli rispose: Guai anche a voi, dottori della legge; perché caricate gli uomini di pesi, che non possono portare; ma voi tali pesi non li tocchereste con uno de' vostri diti. | 46 And he said, "Woe to you lawyers also! for you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. |
| 47 Guai a voi, che fabbricate monumenti a' profeti: e i padri vostri furono quelli, che gli ammazzarono. | 47 Woe to you! for you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. |
| 48 Certamente voi date a conoscere, che approvate le opere de' padri vostri: mentre essi uccisero i profeti, e voi fabbricate loro de' monumenti. | 48 So you are witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs. |
| 49 Per questo ancora la sapienza di Dio ha detto: Io manderò loro de' profeti, e degli Apostoli, e altri ne uccideranno, altri ne perseguiteranno: | 49 Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,' |
| 50 Affinchè a questa generazione si domandi conto del sangue di tutti i profeti, sparso dalla creazione del mondo in poi: | 50 that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, |
| 51 Dal sangue di Abel fino al sangue di Zaccaria, ucciso tra l'altare, e il tempio. Certamente vi dico, ne sarà domandato conto a questa generazione. | 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation. |
| 52 Guai a voi, dottori della legge, che vi siete usurpati la chiave della scienza, e non siete entrati voi, e avete impedito que', che vi entravano. | 52 Woe to you lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering." |
| 53 E mentre tali cose diceva loro, i Farisei, e i dottori della legge cominciarono a opporsegli fortemente, e a sopraffarlo con molte questioni, | 53 As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard, and to provoke him to speak of many things, |
| 54 Tendendogli insidie, e cercando di cavargli di bocca qualche cosa, onde accusarlo. | 54 lying in wait for him, to catch at something he might say. |
