| 1 Infatti ogni pontefice, preso di fra gli uomini, è costituito a prò degli uomini in tutto ciò che riguarda Dio, perchè offra doni e sacrifizi per i peccati, | 1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. |
| 2 e possa avere compassione degli ignoranti e dei traviati, essendo egli stesso circondato d'infermità: | 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. |
| 3 e quindi deve, come per il popolo, anche per se stesso fare il sacrifizio per i peccati. | 3 Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. |
| 4 E nessuno può arrogarsi tal dignità; ma soltanto chi è chiamato da Dio come Aronne. | 4 And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. |
| 5 Così pure Cristo non s'arrogò da se stesso la gloria di essere sommo sacerdote, ma gliela diede Colui che gli disse: Tu sei il mio Figliolo, oggi ti ho generato. | 5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; |
| 6 Ed anche in altro luogo gli dicci: Tu sei sacerdote in eterno, secondo l'ordine di Melchisedech. | 6 as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." |
| 7 Egli nei giorni della sua vita terrena, avendo con forti grida e lacrime offerto preghiere e suppliche a Colui che poteva salvarlo dalla morte, fu esaudito per la sua riverenza. | 7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard for his godly fear. |
| 8 E benché fosse Figliolo, imparò da quello che patì l'obbedienza, | 8 Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; |
| 9 e, giunto alla perfezione, divenne causa di eterna salute per tutti quelli che gli sono obbedienti, | 9 and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, |
| 10 essendo stato proclamato da Dio sommo sacerdote secondo l'ordine di Melchisedech. | 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. |
| 11 A proposito di questo soggetto abbiamo da dire molte cose difficili a spiegare, perchè voi siete diventati un po' deboli nell'intendere, | 11 About this we have much to say which is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. |
| 12 e, mentre per il tempo dovreste esser maestri, avete ancora bisogno che vi s'insegnino i primi rudimenti della parola di Dio e siete ridotti ad aver bisogno di latte e non di solido cibo. | 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need some one to teach you again the first principles of God's word. You need milk, not solid food; |
| 13 Or chi è al latte non può aver esperienza della parola della giustizia, perchè appunto è bambino; | 13 for every one who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a child. |
| 14 mentre il cibo solido è per gli uomini fatti, per quelli che hanno dalla pratica addestrate le facoltà al discernimento del bene e del male. | 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their faculties trained by practice to distinguish good from evil. |
