1 Allora i re e i principi di tutte le città e di tutte le provincie, cioè della Siria di Mesopotamia, della Siria di Sobal, della Libia, e della Cilicia, mandarono i loro ambasciatori, i quali, giunti davanti a Oloferne, dissero:	1 Then the kings as well as the princes of the provinces sent their emissaries from all of the cities: from Syria, particularly Mesopotamia, and Syria Sobal, and Libya as well as Cilicia. These, upon coming to Holofernes, said:
2 « Cessi il tuo sdegno contro di noi, chè per noi è meglio vivere servi di Nabucodonosor e a te soggetti, che morirti sterminati dopo aver sofferti i mali della schiavitù.	2 “Let your indignation concerning us cease. For it is better for us to live in service to Nebuchadnezzar, the great king, and to become subject to you, rather than to die, even though we may have to suffer our condemnation into the annihilation of slavery.
3 Tutte le nostre città, tutti i nostri possessi, tutti i monti, i colli, i campi, gli armenti dei buoi, i branchi delle pecore e delle capre, i cavalli, i cammelli e tutte le nostre facoltà e le nostre famiglie son a tua disposizione.	3 All our cities and all our possessions, all mountains, and hills, and fields, and herds of cattle, and flocks of sheep, and goats, and horses, and camels, and all our resources and families are in your sight.
4 Tutto ciò che è nostro sia sotto la tua legge;	4 Let all that we have be subject to your law.
5 noi e i nostri figli siamo tuoi servi;	5 We, and our sons, are your servants.
6 vieni a noi come pacifico signore, e disponi come ti piacerà dei nostri servizi ».	6 Come to us as a peaceful lord, and use our service, just as it pleases you.”
7 Ma (Oloferne), disceso dai monti colla cavalleria e con grandi forze, s'impadronì di tutte le città e di tutti gli abitanti della terra,	7 Then he descended from the mountains with horsemen, in great power, and he took charge of every city and of every inhabitant of the land.
8 e da tutte quelle città prese come ausiliari gli uomini robusti e scelti per la guerra.	8 And, from all the cities, he took for himself auxiliaries: strong men and well-chosen for war.
9 Fu tanto lo spavento che invase quelle provincie, che i principali di tutte le città e le persone più distinte insieme ai popoli gli andavano incontro,	9 And such a dread lay upon those provinces, that the leading and honored inhabitants of all the cities, together with the people, went out to meet him at his arrival.
10 e lo ricevevano con corone e torce danzando al suono di timpani e di trombe.	10 They received him with garlands and lamps; they were led by choirs with timbrels and flutes.
11 Però, per quanto facessero, non riuscirono ad ammansire la ferocia di quel cuore;	11 Yet, not even by doing these things were they able to mitigate the ferocity of his chest.
12 distrusse le loro città, abbattè i loro boschetti sacri;	12 For he both destroyed their cities and cut down their sacred groves.
13 perchè il re Nabucodonosor aveva ordinato di sterminare tutti gli dèi della terra, per esser chiamato lui solo dio delle nazioni soggiogate dal valore di Oloferne.	13 For king Nebuchadnezzar had instructed him to exterminate all the gods of the earth, evidently so that he alone might be called ‘god’ by those nations which were able to be subjugated by the power of Holofernes.
14 Questi, percorsa la Siria di Sobal e tutta l'Apamea e tutta la Mesopotamia, giunse dagli Idumei nella terra di Gabaa,	14 But when he had passed through Syria Sobal, and all of Apamea, and all Mesopotamia, he came to the Idumeans in the land of Gibeah.
15 e, prese le loro città, vi si fermò trenta giorni, durante i quali fece riunire tutte le truppe della sua armata.	15 And he took their cities, and he sat there for thirty days, during which days he instructed all the troops of his army to regroup.
