1 Or Giacobbe senti che i figli di Labano dicevano: « Giacobbe ha tolto tutto quello che era di nostro padre ed è divenuto potente arricchendosi coi beni di lui »;	1 Jacob learned that Laban's sons were saying, "Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father, and he has accumulated all this wealth of his by using our father's property."
2 osservò ancora che Labano non era verso di lui quel di prima,	2 Jacob perceived, too, that Laban's attitude toward him was not what it had previously been.
3 e di più il Signore gli diceva: « Torna nella terra dei tuoi padri, dei tuoi parenti ed io sarò teco ».	3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your fathers, where you were born, and I will be with you."
4 Fece adunque chiamare Rachele e Lia nel campo dove egli pasceva i greggi,	4 So Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah to meet him where he was in the field with his flock.
5 e disse loro: « Io mi accorgo che il vostro padre non è verso di me quel di prima; ma il Dio di mio padre è stato con me.	5 There he said to them: "I have noticed that your father's attitude toward me is not as it was in the past; but the God of my father has been with me.
6 Voi ben sapete come ho servito al vostro padre con tutto il mio potere,	6 You well know what effort I put into serving your father;
7 mentre il vostro padre mi ha ingannato ed ha mutata dieci volte la mia mercede; ma Dio non gli ha permesso di farmi del male.	7 yet your father cheated me and changed my wages time after time. God, however, did not let him do me any harm.
8 Infatti, quando egli diceva: Saran tua mercede gli agnelli chiazzati, tutte le pecore figliavano agnelli chiazzati; quando al contrario diceva: Prenderai per tua mercede tutti gli agnelli bianchi, tutti i greggi figliavano agnelli bianchi.	8 Whenever your father said, 'The speckled animals shall be your wages,' the entire flock would bear speckled young; whenever he said, 'The streaked animals shall be your wages,' the entire flock would bear streaked young.
9 Così Dio ha tolto i beni di vostro padre e li ha dati a me.	9 Thus God reclaimed your father's livestock and gave it to me.
10 Ora al tempo in cui le pecore dovevan concepire, io alzai gli occhi e vidi in sogno che i maschi i quali montavano le femmine erano chiazzati, macchiati e di vario colore.	10 Once, in the breeding season, I had a dream in which I saw mating he-goats that were streaked, speckled and mottled.
11 E l'angelo di Dio mi disse nel sogno: Giacobbe. Io risposi; Eccomi.	11 In the dream God's messenger called to me, 'Jacob!' 'Here!' I replied.
12 Ed egli: « Alza i tuoi occhi e guarda come tutti i maschi che montan le femmine sono chiazzati, macchiati e screziati; perchè io ho veduto tutto quello che ti ha fatto Labano.	12 Then he said: 'Note well. All the he-goats in the flock, as they mate, are streaked, speckled and mottled, for I have seen all the things that Laban has been doing to you.
13 Io sono il Dio di Betel dove tu ungesti la pietra e mi facesti voto. Ora dunque levati, parti da questa terra e torna nel paese ove sei nato ».	13 I am the God who appeared to you in Bethel, where you anointed a memorial stone and made a vow to me. Up, then! Leave this land and return to the land of your birth.'"
14 Rachele e Lia risposero: « Abbiam forse qualche cosa o dell'eredità in casa di nostro padre?	14 Rachel and Leah answered him: "Have we still an heir's portion in our father's house?
15 Non ci ha egli trattate come straniere? non ci ha vendute? Non ha mangiato anche il nostro prezzo?	15 Are we not regarded by him as outsiders? He not only sold us; he has even used up the money that he got for us!
16 Ma Dio ha prese le ricchezze del nostro padre e le ha date a noi e ai nostri figlioli: fa dunque tutto quello che Dio ti ha comandato ».	16 All the wealth that God reclaimed from our father really belongs to us and our children. Therefore, do just as God has told you."
17 Allora Giacobbe si alzò, e messi i figlioli è le mogli sopra i cammelli, se ne parti,	17 Jacob proceeded to put his children and wives on camels,
18 prendendo tutto il suo, e i greggi e tutto ciò che aveva acquietato in Mesopotamia; e, se ne andò da Isacco suo padre nella terra di Cahaan.	18 and he drove off with all his livestock and all the property he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.
19 Essendo in quel tempo andato Labano a tosare le sue pecore, Rachele rubò gli idoli di suo padre	19 Now Laban had gone away to shear his sheep, and Rachel had meanwhile appropriated her father's household idols.
20 e Giacobbe non volle far sapere al suocero la sua fuga.	20 Jacob had hoodwinked Laban the Aramean by not telling him of his intended flight.
21 Ma partito che fu con tutto quello che era suo, mentre, passato il fiume, si avanzava verso il monte di Galaad,	21 Thus he made his escape with all that he had. Once he was across the Euphrates, he headed for the highlands of Gilead.
22 il terzo giorno, la notizia della fuga di Giacobbe fu portata a Labano	22 On the third day, word came to Laban that Jacob had fled.
23 il quale, presi seco i suoi fratelli, lo inseguì per sette giorni e lo raggiunse al monte di Galaad.	23 Taking his kinsmen with him, he pursued him for seven days until he caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.
24 Ma in sogno vide Dio che gli diceva: « Guardati dal dir parole aspre a Giacobbe ».	24 But that night God appeared to Laban the Aramean in a dream and warned him, "Take care not to threaten Jacob with any harm!"
25 E Giacobbe aveva già tesa la sua tenda sul monte quando lo raggiunse coi suoi fratelli Labano che, piantata la sua tenda sullo stesso monte di Galaad,	25 When Laban overtook Jacob, Jacob's tents were pitched in the highlands; Laban also pitched his tents there, on Mount Gilead.
26 disse a Giacobbe: « Perchè hai tu agito così da menar via le mie figlie furtivamente, come prigioniere di guerra?	26 "What do you mean," Laban demanded of Jacob, "by hoodwinking me and carrying off my daughters like war captives?
27 Perchè sei fuggito a mia insaputa, senza avvertirmi, chè io t'avrei accomiatato con feste e canti e timpani e cetre?	27 Why did you dupe me by stealing away secretly? You should have told me, and I would have sent you off with merry singing to the sound of tambourines and harps.
28 Non mi hai permesso nemmeno di dare un bacio ai miei figli e alle mie figlie! Hai operato da stolto,	28 You did not even allow me a parting kiss to my daughters and grandchildren! What you have now done is a senseless thing.
29 e per questo ora potrei farti del male; ma il Dio del padre vostro ieri mi disse: Guardati dal parlare con asprezza a Giacobbe.	29 I have it in my power to harm all of you; but last night the God of your father said to me, 'Take care not to threaten Jacob with any harm!'
30 Certo tu desideravi tornare dai tuoi e ti stimolava il desiderio della casa di tuo padre; ma perchè mi hai rubati i miei dèi? »	30 Granted that you had to leave because you were desperately homesick for your father's house, why did you steal my gods?"
31 Giacobbe rispose: « In quanto all'esser partito a tua insaputa, l'ho fatto perchè temei che tu mi rapissi a forza le tue figlie;	31 "I was frightened," Jacob replied to Laban, "at the thought that you might take your daughters away from me by force.
32 quanto poi al furto di cui mi rimproveri, colui presso il quale troverai i tuoi dèi, chiunque sia, sarà messo a morte in presenza dei nostri fratelli. Cerca pure e prendi tutto quello che di tuo troverai presso di me ». Diceva questo, perchè non sapeva che Rachele avesse rubati gl'idoli.	32 But as for your gods, the one you find them with shall not remain alive! If, with my kinsmen looking on, you identify anything here as belonging to you, take it." Jacob, of course, had no idea that Rachel had stolen the idols.
33 Labano adunque entrò nella tenda di Giacobbe, e di Lia, e delle due schiave, senza trovar nulla. Quando entrò nella tenda di Rachele,	33 Laban then went in and searched Jacob's tent and Leah's tent, as well as the tents of the two maidservants; but he did not find the idols. Leaving Leah's tent, he went into Rachel's.
34 essa in fretta nascose gl'idoli sotto il basto d'un cammello sopra cui sedette. E mentre Labano frugava tutta la tenda senza trovarli,	34 Now Rachel had taken the idols, put them inside a camel cushion, and seated herself upon them. When Laban had rummaged through the rest of her tent without finding them,
35 Rachele disse: «Non si sdegni il mio signore, s'io non posso alzarmi alla tua presenza, perchè ho proprio ora il solito incomodo delle donne ». Così fu delusa la sua ricerca fatta con tanta sollecitudine.	35 Rachel said to her father, "Let not my lord feel offended that I cannot rise in your presence; a woman's period is upon me." So, despite his search, he did not find his idols.
36 Allora Giacobbe, sdegnato, disse rimproverando: «Per qual mia colpa e per qual mio peccato mi sei corso dietro con tanto accanimento?	36 Jacob, now enraged, upbraided Laban. "What crime or offense have I committed," he demanded, "that you should hound me so fiercely?
37 Tu hai frugato fra tutta la mia roba; ebbene, che vi hai trovato di tutti i beni di casa tua? Mettilo qui alla presenza dei fratelli miei e dei fratelli tuoi, affinchè essi giudichino fra noi due.	37 Now that you have ransacked all my things, have you found a single object taken from your belongings? If so, produce it here before your kinsmen and mine, and let them decide between us two.
38 Per questo sono stato venti anni con te? Le tue pecore e le tue capre non furono sterili; io non ho mangiato gli arieti del tuo gregge;	38 "In the twenty years that I was under you, no ewe or she-goat of yours ever miscarried, and I have never feasted on a ram of your flock.
39 io non ti ho fatto vedere ciò che le fiere avevan rapito; io pagava ogni danno, e tu esigevi da me tutto quello che era rubato.	39 I never brought you an animal torn by wild beasts; I made good the loss myself. You held me responsible for anything stolen by day or night.
40 Il giorno e la notte ero consumato o dal caldo o dal gelo, e il sonno, fuggiva dai miei occhi.	40 How often the scorching heat ravaged me by day, and the frost by night, while sleep fled from my eyes!
41 Così io t'ho servito in casa tua per vent'anni: quattordici per le figlie, sei per i tuoi, greggi; e tu per ben dieci volte mi hai barattata la mercede.	41 Of the twenty years that I have now spent in your household, I slaved fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flock, while you changed my wages time after time.
42 Se il Dio del mio padre Abramo, il Temuto da Isacco non mi avesse assistito, ora forse tu mi avresti mandato via nudo; ma Dio ha veduta la mia afflizione, la fatica delle mie mani, e ieri ti sgridò ».	42 If my ancestral God, the God of Abraham and the Awesome One of Isaac, had not been on my side, you would now have sent me away empty-handed. But God saw my plight and the fruits of my toil, and last night he gave judgment."
43 Labano gli rispose: «Le mie figlie, e i figli, e i tuoi greggi e quanto vedi è cosa mia: e che potrei fare contro i figli e i nipoti miei?	43 Laban replied to Jacob: "The women are mine, their children are mine, and the flocks are mine; everything you see belongs to me. But since these women are my daughters, I will now do something for them and for the children they have borne.
44 Vieni dunque, e facciamo un'alleanza che serva di testimonianza fra me e te ».	44 Come, then, we will make a pact, you and I; the LORD shall be a witness between us."
45 Giacobbe adunque prese una pietra e la eresse in monumento,	45 Then Jacob took a stone and set it up as a memorial stone.
46 poi disse ai suoi fratelli: « Portate delle pietre ». Ed essi, radunatene parecchie, ne fecero un mucchio, sopra il quale mangiarono.	46 Jacob said to his kinsmen, "Gather some stones." So they got some stones and made a mound; and they had a meal there at the mound.
47 Labano lo chiamò il Mucchio del testimone, e Giacobbe, il Cumulo della testimonianza, ciascuno secondo la proprietà del suo linguaggio.	47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob named it Galeed.
48 E Labano disse: « Questo mucchio sarà oggi testimone fra me e te. — Per questo quel mucchio fu chiamato Galaad, cioè Mucchio del testimone. —	48 "This mound," said Laban, "shall be a witness from now on between you and me." That is why it was named Galeed--
49 Che il Signore ci guardi e ci giudichi, quando saremo separati l'uno dall'altro.	49 and also Mizpah, for he said: "May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are out of each other's sight.
50 Se tu maltratterai le me figlie, e aggiungerai ad esse altre mogli, nessuno è testimone delle nostre parole se non Dio, il quale è presente e ci vede ».	50 If you mistreat my daughters, or take other wives besides my daughters, remember that even though no one else is about, God will be witness between you and me."
51 E disse ancora a Giacobbe: « Ecco, il mucchio e la pietra che ho eretta fra me e te sarà testimone.	51 Laban said further to Jacob: "Here is this mound, and here is the memorial stone that I have set up between you and me.
52 Questo mucchio, io dico, e questa pietra rendano testimonianza, se io lo passerò per venire a te e se tu lo passerai per venire a me con l'intenzione di far del male,	52 This mound shall be witness, and this memorial stone shall be witness, that, with hostile intent, neither may I pass beyond this mound into your territory, nor may you pass beyond it into mine.
53 il Dio d'Abramo, il Dio di Nacor, il Dio del padre loro sia giudice fra noi ». Giacobbe allora giurò per il Temuto da Isacco suo padre,	53 May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor (their ancestral deities) maintain justice between us!" Jacob took the oath by the Awesome One of Isaac.
54 e immolate sul monte le vittime, invitò i suoi fratelli a mangiar del pane. E mangiato che ebbero, si fermarono ancora li.	54 He then offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his kinsmen to share in the meal. When they had eaten, they passed the night on the mountain.
55 La mattina, avanti giorno, Labano si alzò, e baciati i figli e le sue figlie, li benedisse e se ne tornò a casa sua.
