BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Rachele, vedendosi sterile, invidiava sua sorella, e disse, al marito: « Dammi dei figlioli: altrimenti io muoio ».	1 Rachel, seeing that she herself gave Jacob no children, became jealous of her sister. And she said toJacob, 'Give me children, or I shal die!'
2 E Giacobbe le rispose adirato: « Son forse al posto di Dio che t'ha negata la fecondità? »	2 This made Jacob angry with Rachel, and he retorted, 'Am I in the position of God, who has denied youmotherhood?'
3 E Rachele: « Ho la mia serva Baia: dormi con lei, affinchè essa partorisca sulle mie ginocchia e io abbia figli da lei ».	3 So she said, 'Here is my slave-girl, Bilhah. Sleep with her and let her give birth on my knees; throughher, then, I too shal have children!'
4 E gli diede Baia per moglie.	4 So she gave him her slave-girl Bilhah as concubine. Jacob slept with her,
5 E questa, stata con Giacobbe, concepì e partorì un figlio.	5 and Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a son by Jacob.

7 E Baia concepì ancora e partorì un altro figlio,	7 Again Rachel's slave-girl Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a second son by Jacob.

18 e disse: « Il Signore mi ha data la mercede per aver io data la mia serva al mio marito »; e lo chiamò Issacar.	18 Then Leah said, 'God has given me my reward for giving my slave-girl to my husband.' So shenamed him Issachar.
19 E Lia, avendo concepito ancora, partorì il sesto figlio,	19 Again Leah conceived and gave birth to a sixth son by Jacob,
20 e disse: «Dio mi ha dotata di buona dote; anche questa volta il mio marito starà con me, avendogli io dato sei figlioli ». E per questo lo chiamò Zàbulon,	20 and said, 'God has given me a fine gift; now my husband wil bring me presents, for I have borne himsix sons.' So she named him Zebulun.
21 Dopo di lui partorì una figlia che ebbe nome Dina.	21 Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
22 Il Signore si ricordò anche di Rachele, e la esaudì e la rese feconda,	22 Then God remembered Rachel; he heard her and opened her womb.
23 Ed essa concepì e partorì un figlio, dicendo: « Dio ha tolto il mio obbrobrio ».	23 She conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'God has taken away my disgrace!'
24 E lo chiamò col nome di Giuseppe, dicendo: «M'aggiunga il Signore un altro figliolo ».	24 She named him Joseph, saying, 'May Yahweh add another son for me!'
25 Nato che fu Giuseppe, Giacobbe disse al suo socero: « Dammi licenza, che io me ne torni in patria, alla mia terra.	25 When Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, 'Release me and let me go home tomy own country.

27 Labano gli disse: « Possa io trovar grazia dinanzi a te! Ho conosciuto alla prova che Dio m'ha benedetto per causa tua;	27 Laban replied, 'If I have done what pleases you . . . I have learnt by divination that Yahweh hasblessed me because of you.
28 determina dunque la ricompensa che dovrò darti ».	28 So name your wages,' he added, 'and I wil pay.'
29 E Giacobbe rispose: « Tu sai in che modo ti ho servito, e quanto siano aumentati nelle mie mani i tuoi beni.	29 He replied, 'You know how hard I have worked for you, and how your stock has fared in my charge.
30 Avanti che venissi da te avevi poco e ora invece sei diventato ricco, e il Signore ti ha benedetto dovunque sono entrato io. Ora è giusto che io pensi una buona volta anche alla mia famiglia ».	30 The little you had before I came has increased enormously, and Yahweh has blessed you wherever Ihave been. When am I to provide for my own household too?'
31 E Labano gli disse: « Che ti devo dare! » Ma Giacobbe rispose: « Io non voglio nulla; ma se farai quello che ti chiedo, tornerò a pascere i tuoi greggi e n'avrò cura.	31 Laban said, 'How much am I to pay you?' Jacob replied, 'You need not pay me anything. I shallchange my mind and go on tending your flock, if you do this one thing for me.
32 Passa in mezzo a tutti i tuoi greggi e metti da parte tutte le pecore vaneggiate e vaiolate, e tutto ciò che nascerà di color fosco e macchiato e vario, tanto fra le pecore che fra le capre, sarà la mia mercede.	32 'Go through your entire flock today and remove every black animal among the sheep, and everyspeckled or spotted one among the goats. These wil be my wages,
33 Così nell'avvenire, quando verrà il tempo fissato fra noi, la mìa giustizia risponderà per me, e tutto quello che non sarà vaneggiato o macchiato o fosco, nelle pecore come nelle capre, mi dimostrerà reo di furto ».	33 and my uprightness wil answer for me later: when you come to check my wages, every goat I havethat is not speckled or spotted, and every sheep that is not black will count as stolen by me.'
34 Labano rispose: « Mi piace quello che chiedi ».	34 Laban replied, 'Good, just as you say.'
35 E quel giorno Labano separò le capre, le pecore e i capri e i montoni vaneggiati e macchiati, e diede ai suoi figli il governo di tutto il gregge di un sol colore, cioè bianco e nero.	35 That same day he removed the striped and speckled he-goats and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, every one that had white on it, and al the black sheep, and entrusted these to his sons.
36 Pose poi la distanza di tre giornate di cammino fra sè e il genero, che pasceva il rimanente dei suoi greggi.	36 Then he put a three days' journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob grazed the rest ofLaban's flock.
37 Or Giacobbe prese delle bacchette verdi di pioppo, di mandorlo e di platano, ne tagliò la corteccia a strisce, da fare spiccare il bianco dov'era levata la buccia, rimanendo verdi le bacchette ove non erano sbucciate, e così ne risultò il color vario.	37 Jacob then got fresh shoots from poplar, almond and plane trees, and peeled them in white strips,laying bare the white part of the shoots.
38 Pose poi le bacchette nei canali dove era gettata l'acqua, affinchè i greggi, quando venivano a bere, avessero dinanzi agli occhi le bacchette e concepissero guardandole.	38 He set up the shoots he had peeled in front of the animals, in the troughs, in the water-holes wherethe animals came to drink. Since they mated when they came to drink,
39 Così avvenne che le pecore, accoppiandosi con quei rami davanti, facevano agnelli macchiettati, vaneggiati e vaiolati.	39 the goats thus mated in front of the shoots and so the goats produced striped, spotted and speckledyoung.
40 E Giacobbe divise il gregge; e pose le bacchette nei canali davanti agli occhi dei capri: eran poi di Labano tutti i bianchi e i neri, e di Giacobbe gli altri, e i greggi stavano separati.	40 The ewes, on the other hand, Jacob kept apart and made these face whatever was striped or blackin Laban's flock. Thus he built up droves of his own which he did not put with Laban's flocks.
41 Quando dunque in primavera le pecore dovevan concepire, Giacobbe metteva le bacchette nei canali dell'acqua, dinanzi agli occhi dei montoni e delle pecore, affinchè concepissero guardandole.	41 Furthermore, whenever the sturdier animals were mating, Jacob put the shoots where the animalscould see them, in the troughs, so that they would mate in front of the shoots.
42 Quando però le pecore, in autunno, concepiscono per la seconda volta, non metteva le bacchette. Così le pecore concepite in autunno eran di Labano, quelle concepite in primavera eran di Giacobbe,	42 But when the animals were feeble, he did not put them there; so Laban got the feeble, and Jacob thesturdy.
43 il quale diventò oltremodo ricco ed ebbe numerosi greggi e serve e servi e cammelli e asini.	43 Thus the man grew extremely rich, and came to own large flocks, men and women slaves, camelsand donkeys.
