1 Or Sara visse cento ventisette anni,	1 The span of Sarah's life was one hundred and twenty-seven years.
2 e morì nella città di Arbee, che è Ebron, nella terra di Canaan; e Abramo vi andò per farne il duolo e piangerla.	2 She died in Kiriatharba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham performed the customary mourning rites for her.
3 Essendosi poi alzato, terminato il funebre duolo, parlò coi figli di Het, dicendo:	3 Then he left the side of his dead one and addressed the Hittites:
4 « Io sono forestiero e pellegrino presso di voi: datemi la proprietà d'un sepolcro tra voi, affinchè possa seppellire il mio morto ».	4 "Although I am a resident alien among you, sell me from your holdings a piece of property for a burial ground, that I may bury my dead wife."
5 I figli di Het, rispondendo, dissero:	5 The Hittites answered Abraham: "Please, sir,
6 « Signore, ascoltaci: tu sei fra noi un principe di Dio; seppellisci il tuo morto nel migliore dei nostri sepolcri e nessuno potrà vietarti di seppellire il tuo morto nel suo sepolcro ».	6 listen to us! You are an elect of God among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our burial sites. None of us would deny you his burial ground for the burial of your dead."
7 Abramo si alzò e s'inchinò al popolo del paese, ai figli d'Het,	7 Abraham, however, began to bow low before the local citizens, the Hittites,
8 e disse loro; « Se acconsentite ch'io seppellisca il mio morto, ascoltatemi, e intercedete per me presso Efron, figlio di Seor,	8 while he appealed to them: "If you will allow me room for burial of my dead, listen to me! Intercede for me with Ephron, son of Zohar, asking him
9 affìnchè mi ceda la doppia caverna che ha nell'estremità del suo campo, me la ceda in vostra presenza, per il prezzo che vale, e così io possegga un sepolcro ».	9 to sell me the cave of Machpelah that he owns; it is at the edge of his field. Let him sell it to me in your presence, at its full price, for a burial place."
10 Allora Efron, che stava in mezzo ai figli di Het, (Efron) rispose ad Abramo in presenza di tutti quelli che entravano nella porta della città, e disse:	10 Now Ephron was present with the Hittites. So Ephron the Hittite replied to Abraham in the hearing of the Hittites who sat on his town council:
11 «No, signor mio, non avverrà così; anzi senti quel che dico: Io ti dò il campo e la caverna che vi è in esso, alla presenza dei figli del mio popolo: seppellisci pure il tuo morto ».	11 "Please, sir, listen to me! I give you both the field and the cave in it; in the presence of my kinsmen I make this gift. Bury your dead!"
12 Abramo s'inchinò dinanzi al popolo del paese,	12 But Abraham, after bowing low before the local citizens, addressed Ephron in the hearing of these men:
13 e in presenza del popolo disse ad Efron: « Ascoltami,ti prego: io darò il danaro per il campo; prendilo, e così vi seppellirò il mio morto ».	13 "Ah, if only you would please listen to me! I will pay you the price of the field. Accept it from me, that I may bury my dead there."
14 Ed Efron rispose:	14 Ephron replied to Abraham, "Please,
15 « Signor mio, ascoltami: il terreno che tu chiedi vale quattrocento sicli d'argento: questo è il prezzo fra me e te; ma che è gran cosa questa? Seppellisci pure il tuo morto ».	15 sir, listen to me! A piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver--what is that between you and me, as long as you can bury your dead?"
16 Avendo ciò udito, Abramo pesò alla presenza dei figli di Het il danaro domandato da Efron, cioè quattrocento sicli d'argento di buona moneta mercantile.	16 Abraham accepted Ephron's terms; he weighed out to him the silver that Ephron had stipulated in the hearing of the Hittites, four hundred shekels of silver at the current market value.
17 Così il campo che era stato di Efron, nel quale era una doppia caverna che guardava verso Mambre, il campo, con la caverna e tutte le piante che erano all'intorno dentro i suoi confini,	17 Thus Ephron's field in Machpelah, facing Mamre, together with its cave and all the trees anywhere within its limits, was conveyed
18 fu ceduto in pieno dominio ad Abramo, in presenza dei figli di Het e di tutti quelli che entravano nella porta di quella città.	18 to Abraham by purchase in the presence of all the Hittites who sat on Ephron's town council.
19 Così dunque Abramo seppellì Sara sua moglie nella doppia caverna del campo che riguardava Mambre, la quale è Ebron, nella terra di Canaan.	19 After this transaction, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field of Machpelah, facing Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
20 E dai figli di Het fu'confermato ad Abramo il dominio del campo e della caverna che era in esso, perche lo usasse come sepolcro.	20 Thus the field with its cave was transferred from the Hittites to Abraham as a burial place.
