1 - Frattanto i Filistei aveano dato battaglia a Israele e gli Israeliti fuggirono dinanzi ai Filistei e caddero morti sul monte di Gelboe.	1 Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel. And the men of Israel fled before the face of the Philistines, and they fell down slain on mount Gilboa.
2 I Filistei irruppero allora contro Saul e i figli di lui e uccisero Gionata, Abinadab e Melchisua figli di Saul.	2 And the Philistines rushed upon Saul, and upon his sons, and they struck down Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.
3 Tutto lo sforzo del combattimento però si portò contro Saul, che inseguito dagli arcieri venne da loro gravemente ferito.	3 And the entire weight of the battle was turned against Saul. And the men who were archers pursued him. And he was severely wounded by the archers.
4 Saul disse allora al suo scudiero: «Sfodera la spada e trafiggimi affinchè non vengano questi incirconcisi ad uccidermi e a fare di me il loro ludibrio». Ma non avendone voluto sapere lo scudiero, poichè era in preda a grande spavento, Saul diè di piglio alla spada e vi si gettò sopra.	4 Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and strike me, otherwise these uncircumcised may come and kill me, mocking me.” And his armor bearer was not willing. For he had been struck with an exceedingly great fear. And so, Saul took his own sword, and he fell upon it.
5 Lo scudiero, visto ciò, cioè che Saul era morto, si gettò parimenti sulla propria spada e morì con lui.	5 And when his armor bearer had seen this, namely, that Saul had died, he too fell upon his sword, and he died with him.
6 Così in quello stesso giorno morì Saul, i suoi tre figli, il suo scudiero e tutti i suoi uomini.	6 Therefore, Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor bearer, and all his men, on the same day together.
7 Quando i figli d'Israele, che erano oltre la Valle e al di là del Giordano, videro che gli Israeliti erano fuggiti e che Saul era morto, abbandonarono le loro città e si diedero alla fuga e i Filistei vennero ad abitare colà.	7 Then, seeing that the men of the Israelites had fled, and that Saul had died with his sons, the men of Israel who were across the valley or beyond the Jordan abandoned their cities, and they fled. And the Philistines went and lived there.
8 L'indomani giunsero i Filistei per spogliare gli uccisi e trovati Saul e i suoi tre figli, che giacevan sul monte di Gelboe,	8 Then, when the next day arrived, the Philistines came, so that they might despoil the slain. And they found Saul and his three sons lying on mount Gilboa.
9 tagliarono la testa a Saul, lo spogliarono delle armi e mandarono in giro nel paese dei Filistei, ad annunziare [la buona notizia] nei templi degli idoli e in mezzo al popolo.	9 And they cut off the head of Saul. And they despoiled him of the armor, and they sent it into the land of the Philistines all around, so that it might be announced in the temples of the idols and among their people.
10 Collocarono poi le armi di Saul nel tempio di Astarot, mentre il suo cadavere venne sospeso alle mura di Betsan.	10 And they placed his armor in the temple of Ashtaroth. But his body they suspended on the wall of Bethshan.
11 Quando gli abitanti di Jabes di Galaad udirono quel che i Filistei aveano fatto a Saul,	11 And when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead had heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 si levarono tutti gli uomini più valorosi e dopo aver camminato tutta la notte tolsero via dalle mura di Betsan il cadavere di Saul e dei suoi figliuoli e ritornati a Jabes di Galaad ve li bruciarono.	12 all the most valiant men rose up, and they walked all night, and they took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan. And they went to Jabesh Gilead, and they burned them there.
13 Raccolsero poi le loro ossa e le seppellirono nel bosco di Jabes e digiunarono per sette giorni.	13 And they took their bones, and they buried them in the forest of Jabesh. And they fasted for seven days.
