1 - Davide allora salì verso i luoghi più sicuri di Engaddi e vi si fermò.	1 Then David ascended from there, and he lived in very secure places in Engedi.
2 Allorchè Saul fu di ritorno dall'inseguimento dei Filistei, gli vennero ad annunziare: «Ecco, Davide si trova nel deserto di Engaddi».	2 And when Saul had returned after pursuing the Philistines, they reported to him, saying, “Behold, David is in the desert of Engedi.”
3 Presi con sè tremila uomini tra i più valorosi guerrieri di tutto Israele, andò alla ricerca di Davide e de' suoi, fin tra le rocce più scoscese accessibili soltanto ai camosci;	3 Therefore, Saul, taking three thousand elect men from all of Israel, traveled in order to search for David and his men, even upon the most broken rocks, which are passable only to mountain goats.
4 e giunse ai parchi di pecore, che si incontravano sul cammino. Eravi colà una grotta nella quale Saul entrò per certi suoi bisogni. Ora Davide coi suoi si trovava nascosto in fondo alla grotta,	4 And he arrived at the sheepfolds, which presented themselves along the way. And a cave was in that place, which Saul entered, so that he might ease his bowels. But David and his men were hiding in the interior part of the cave.
5 e i suoi compagni gli dissero: «Ecco il giorno del quale il Signore ti ha detto: - Io ti darò nelle mani il tuo nemico e ne farai ciò che ti piacerà -». Davide allora si levò e tagliò un lembo del mantello di Saul.	5 And the servants of David said to him: “Behold the day, about which the Lord said to you, ‘I will deliver your enemy to you, so that you may do to him as it will be pleasing in your eyes.’ ” Then David rose up, and he quietly cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.
6 Dopo di che Davide ebbe rimorso al pensiero di aver tagliato il lembo del mantello di Saul	6 After this, his own heart struck David, because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.
7 e disse ai suoi: «Dio mi sia propizio affinchè io non abbia a far una simile cosa al mio signore, l'unto del Signore, di alzar la mano contro di lui, perchè è l'unto del Signore».	7 And he said to his men: “May the Lord be gracious to me, lest I do this thing to my lord, the Christ of the Lord, so that I lay my hand upon him. For he is the Christ of the Lord.”
8 Con le sue parole Davide raffrenò i suoi e non permise che essi si gettassero sopra di Saul. Quando poi Saul si fu levato e, uscito dalla caverna, ebbe ripreso il cammino,	8 And David restrained his men with his words, and he would not permit them to rise up against Saul. And so Saul, going out of the cave, continued to undertake his journey.
9 si levò anche Davide dopo di lui e uscito dalla spelonca gridò dietro a Saul dicendo: «Re, mio signore». Saul si volse indietro, e Davide curvandosi fino a terra si prostrò	9 Then David also rose up after him. And departing from the cave, he cried out behind the back of Saul, saying: “My lord, the king!” And Saul looked behind him. And David, bowing himself face down to the ground, reverenced.
10 e disse a Saul: «Perchè dai ascolto a chi ti dice che Davide cerca il tuo male?	10 And he said to Saul: “Why do you listen to the words of men who say: ‘David seeks evil against you?’
11 Guarda, oggi stesso i tuoi occhi videro che il Signore ti aveva dato nelle mie mani, nella caverna; e quantunque mi fosse venuto il pensiero di ucciderti, ebbi tuttavia pietà di te, e dissi: - Non stenderò la mano sul mio padrone, perchè è l'unto del Signore. -	11 Behold, this day your eyes have seen that the Lord has delivered you into my hand, in the cave. And I thought that I might kill you. But my eye has spared you. For I said: I will not extend my hand against my lord, for he is the Christ of the Lord.
12 Anzi, osserva, padre mio, e vedi il lembo del tuo mantello nella mia mano. Se pertanto, nel tagliare l'estremità del tuo mantello, non volli stendere la mia mano contro di te, devi ben persuaderti, che non c'è nella mia condotta nè malvagità, nè ribellione e che non ho peccato contro di te, mentre tu mi tendi insidie per farmi morire.	12 Moreover, see and know, O my father, the edge of your cloak in my hand. For though I cut off the top of your cloak, I was not willing to extend my hand against you. Turn your soul and see that there is no evil in my hand, nor any iniquity or sin against you. Yet you lie in wait for my life, so that you may take it away.
13 Il Signore sia giudice tra me e te e il Signore mi vendichi di te; ma la mia mano non sarà mai contro di te,	13 May the Lord judge between me and you. And may the Lord vindicate me from you. But my hand will not be against you.
14 giusta l'antico proverbio che dice: -Dagli iniqui viene l'empietà. - La mia mano dunque non deve essere contro di te.	14 So too, it is said in the ancient proverb, ‘From the impious, impiety will go forth.’ Therefore, my hand will not be upon you.
15 E chi è poi, o re di Israele, quegli che tu perseguiti? Chi perseguiti tu? Tu insegui un cane morto, una pulce.	15 Whom are you pursuing, O king of Israel? Whom are you pursuing? You are pursuing a dead dog, a single flea.
16 Il Signore sia giudice tra me e te: veda e giudichi la mia causa, e mi liberi dalle tue mani».	16 May the Lord be the judge, and may he judge between me and you. And may he see and judge my case, and rescue me from your hand.”
17 Come ebbe Davide finito di dire queste parole a Saul, questi gli disse: «Non è questa la voce tua, o figliuol mio Davide?». Poi Saul alzò la sua voce e si mise a piangere	17 And when David had completed speaking words in this way to Saul, Saul said, “Could this be your voice, my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice, and he wept.
18 e disse a Davide: «Tu sei più giusto di me, poichè tu mi hai fatto del bene mentre io non ti resi che male.	18 And he said to David: “You are more just than I am. For you have distributed good to me, but I have repaid evil to you.
19 E qual bene tu mi abbia fatto lo mostrasti oggi, quando avendomi il Signore dato in tua balìa, tu non mi uccidesti.	19 And you have revealed this day the good that you have done for me: how the Lord delivered me into your hand, but you did not kill me.
20 Ora chi mai, essendosi imbattuto nel suo nemico, lo lascia andar per la sua strada? Ma il Signore ti dia il contraccambio dell'opera buona compiuta a mio riguardo.	20 For who, when he will have found his enemy, will release him along a good path? So may the Lord repay you for this good turn, because you have acted on my behalf this day.
21 Ed ora, poichè so che certissimamente tu regnerai e avrai nella tua mano il regno d'Israele,	21 And now I know certainly that you shall be king, and you shall have the kingdom of Israel in your hand.
22 giurami per il Signore che non distruggerai la mia discendenza dopo di me e che non cancellerai il mio nome dalla casa del padre mio».	22 Swear to me in the Lord that you will not take away my offspring after me, nor take away my name from the house of my father.”
23 Davide lo giurò a Saul e questi se ne andò a casa, mentre Davide e i suoi salirono verso luoghi più sicuri.	23 And David swore to Saul. Therefore, Saul went away to his own house. And David and his men ascended to places that were more secure.
