| 1 - Dopo ciò Gesù percorreva la Galilea, non volendo andare in Giudea, perchè i Giudei lo cercavano per ucciderlo. | 1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee; he would not go about in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him. |
| 2 Era imminente una festa dei Giudei, i Tabernacoli, | 2 Now the Jews' feast of Tabernacles was at hand. |
| 3 e i suoi fratelli gli dissero: «Pàrtiti di qua e va' in Giudea, affinchè anche i tuoi discepoli vedano le opere che fai. | 3 So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples may see the works you are doing. |
| 4 Nessuno fa alcunchè di nascosto, quando vuole esser conosciuto in pubblico. Se tanto fai, mostrati al mondo». | 4 For no man works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world." |
| 5 Poichè neppure i suoi fratelli credevano in lui. | 5 For even his brothers did not believe in him. |
| 6 Gesù disse loro: «Il mio momento non è ancora venuto; per voi invece ogni momento è buono. | 6 Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. |
| 7 Il mondo non può odiare voi; ma odia me, perchè io attesto che le sue opere sono malvage. | 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify of it that its works are evil. |
| 8 Andate voi a questa festa; per adesso, io non ci vado, non essendo ancora compiuto il mio tempo». | 8 Go to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come." |
| 9 Ciò detto, rimase in Galilea; | 9 So saying, he remained in Galilee. |
| 10 ma quando i suoi fratelli furono partiti, andò egli pure alla festa, non pubblicamente, ma quasi di nascosto. | 10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. |
| 11 I Giudei intanto lo cercavano durante la festa e si domandavano: «Dov'è egli?». | 11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, "Where is he?" |
| 12 E vi era un gran mormorare di lui fra le turbe. Gli uni dicevano: «È buono»; altri dicevano: «No, ma seduce il popolo». | 12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, "He is a good man," others said, "No, he is leading the people astray." |
| 13 Tuttavia nessuno osava parlare di lui apertamente, per paura dei Giudei. | 13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him. |
| 14 Quando si fu già a metà della festa, Gesù salì al tempio e insegnava. | 14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught. |
| 15 E i Giudei restarono meravigliati e dicevano: «Come mai costui sa di lettere, se non ha mai studiato?». | 15 The Jews marveled at it, saying, "How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?" |
| 16 Gesù rispose loro: «La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di Colui che mi ha mandato. | 16 So Jesus answered them, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me; |
| 17 Se uno vuol fare la volontà di lui, conoscerà se questo insegnamento viene da Dio o se io parlo da me stesso. | 17 if any man's will is to do his will, he shall know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. |
| 18 Chi parla da se stesso, cerca la propria gloria; invece chi cerca la gloria di chi l'ha mandato è verace e non vi è in lui ingiustizia. | 18 He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. |
| 19 Mosè non vi ha dato la legge? Eppure nessuno di voi osserva la legge. | 19 Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?" |
| 20 Perchè cercate di uccidermi?». La moltitudine rispose: «Tu hai un demonio. Chi cerca di ucciderti?». | 20 The people answered, "You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?" |
| 21 Gesù replicò loro: «Io ho fatto un'opera sola, e tutti vi mostrate pieni di meraviglia. | 21 Jesus answered them, "I did one deed, and you all marvel at it. |
| 22 Mosè vi ha dato la circoncisione - benchè essa venga dai padri, non da Mosè - e voi circoncidete un uomo di sabato. | 22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man upon the sabbath. |
| 23 Se l'uomo viene circonciso di sabato per non violare la legge di Mosè, come vi sdegnate contro di me, perchè di sabato ho guarito tutto intero un uomo? | 23 If on the sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the sabbath I made a man's whole body well? |
| 24 Non giudicate secondo le apparenze, ma giudicate con retto giudizio». | 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment." |
| 25 Alcuni dei Gerosolimitani dicevano: «Non è costui che cercano di uccidere? | 25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, "Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? |
| 26 Ed eccolo invece parlare pubblicamente, e non gli dicono nulla. Hanno forse i capi veramente riconosciuto esser lui il Cristo? | 26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? |
| 27 Ma noi sappiamo donde venga quest'uomo, mentre quando il Cristo verrà, nessuno saprà donde sia». | 27 Yet we know where this man comes from; and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from." |
| 28 Gesù, insegnando nel tempio, disse ad alta voce: «Dunque voi mi conoscete, e sapete donde io sia? Eppure non sono venuto da me medesimo, ma è veritiero chi mi ha mandato, e voi non lo conoscete. | 28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, "You know me, and you know where I come from? But I have not come of my own accord; he who sent me is true, and him you do not know. |
| 29 Io lo conosco, perchè io sono da lui ed egli m'ha mandato». | 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me." |
| 30 Perciò cercavano di prenderlo; ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso, perchè la sua ora non era ancora venuta. | 30 So they sought to arrest him; but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come. |
| 31 Molti però della folla credettero in lui e dicevano: «Quando il Cristo verrà, farà forse più prodigi di quelli che fa costui?». | 31 Yet many of the people believed in him; they said, "When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?" |
| 32 I Farisei sentirono che il popolo bisbigliava ciò su di lui; e i Farisei e i capi mandarono guardie a pigliarlo. | 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd thus muttering about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. |
| 33 Disse dunque Gesù: «Per poco tempo sono ancora con voi, e me ne ritorno a Colui che mi ha inviato. | 33 Jesus then said, "I shall be with you a little longer, and then I go to him who sent me; |
| 34 Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete, e non potrete venire dove io sarò». | 34 you will seek me and you will not find me; where I am you cannot come." |
| 35 Dicevano perciò tra loro i Giudei: «Dove mai andrà, se noi non dobbiamo più ritrovarlo? Che se ne vada forse ai dispersi tra i Gentili ad ammaestrare i Gentili? | 35 The Jews said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we shall not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? |
| 36 Che significa ciò che ha detto: - Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete, e non potrete venire dove io sarò? -». | 36 What does he mean by saying, 'You will seek me and you will not find me,' and, 'Where I am you cannot come'?" |
| 37 Nell'ultimo gran giorno della festa, Gesù levatosi in piedi, diceva ad alta voce: «Chi ha sete, venga a me e beva. | 37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. |
| 38 A chi crede in me, come dice la Scrittura, sgorgheranno dal ventre torrenti d'acqua viva». | 38 He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" |
| 39 Ciò egli disse dello Spirito che dovevano ricevere i credenti in lui, non essendo ancora dato lo Spirito, perchè Gesù non era ancora stato glorificato. | 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. |
| 40 Perciò taluni di quella turba, udite queste sue parole, dicevano: «Costui è veramente il Profeta!». | 40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet." |
| 41 Altri dicevano: «Egli è il Cristo». Ed altri invece dicevano: «Forsechè il Cristo verrà dalla Galilea? | 41 Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? |
| 42 Non ha forse detto la Scrittura che il Cristo deve venire dalla progenie di David e dal villaggio di Betleem, ov'era David?». | 42 Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" |
| 43 E così nacque dissenso tra la folla a motivo di lui. | 43 So there was a division among the people over him. |
| 44 E alcuni di essi volevano pigliarlo; ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso. | 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. |
| 45 Le guardie tornarono ai pontefici ed ai Farisei, che dissero loro: «Perchè non l'avete condotto?». | 45 The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" |
| 46 Le guardie risposero: «Nessun uomo ha parlato come quest'uomo». | 46 The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" |
| 47 I Farisei risposero loro: «Siete stati forse sedotti anche voi? | 47 The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? |
| 48 Vi è forse un solo dei capi oppure dei Farisei che abbia creduto in lui? | 48 Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? |
| 49 Ma questa turba, che non sa la legge, è maledetta». | 49 But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed." |
| 50 Nicodemo, uno dei loro, quello stesso ch'era già venuto da Gesù, disse loro: | 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, |
| 51 «La nostra legge giudica forse un uomo senza prima ascoltarlo e sapere ciò che fa?». | 51 "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" |
| 52 Gli risposero: «Sei forse anche tu un Galileo? Scruta le Scritture e vedrai che un profeta non può venire dalla Galilea». | 52 They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee." |
| 53 E ciascuno tornò a casa sua. | 53 They went each to his own house. |
