| 1 - Il vostro cuore non si turbi. Credete in Dio e credete anche in me. | 1 "Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. |
| 2 Nella casa del Padre mio vi sono molte mansioni; se fosse diversamente, ve lo avrei detto, perchè io vado a preparare un posto per voi. | 2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? |
| 3 E quando sarò andato e avrò preparato il vostro posto, tornerò e vi prenderò con me, affinchè dove sono io, siate anche voi. | 3 And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. |
| 4 Voi sapete dove io vada e ne conoscete la via». | 4 And you know the way where I am going." |
| 5 Tommaso gli disse: «Signore, noi non sappiamo dove tu vada; come possiamo conoscerne la via?». | 5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" |
| 6 Gesù gli rispose: «Io sono la via, la verità e la vita. Nessuno viene al Padre se non per mezzo mio. | 6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me. |
| 7 Se voi mi aveste conosciuto, avreste conosciuto anche il Padre mio; e certo voi lo conoscete e l'avete veduto». | 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; henceforth you know him and have seen him." |
| 8 Filippo gli disse: «Signore, mostraci il Padre e ci basta». | 8 Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we shall be satisfied." |
| 9 Gesù rispose: «Da tanto tempo sono con voi, e non mi avete conosciuto? Filippo, chi vede me, vede anche il Padre mio. Come dunque puoi dire: - Mostraci il Padre? - | 9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, 'Show us the Father? |
| 10 Non credi tu che io sia nel Padre ed il Padre in me? Le parole che io vi dico, non le dico da me stesso; ma il Padre che è in me compie le opere. | 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. |
| 11 Non credete che io sono nel Padre e che il Padre è in me? Se non altro credete per le stesse opere. | 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me; or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves. |
| 12 In verità, in verità vi dico: Chi crede in me, farà anch'egli le opere che faccio io, anzi ne farà anche di maggiori, perchè io vado al Padre; | 12 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father. |
| 13 e ciò che domanderete al Padre in mio nome io lo farò affinchè il Padre sia glorificato nel Figliuolo. | 13 Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son; |
| 14 Se mi domanderete qualche cosa in mio nome, io la farò. | 14 if you ask anything in my name, I will do it. |
| 15 Se mi amate, osservate i miei comandamenti; | 15 "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. |
| 16 ed io pregherò il Padre ed egli vi darà un altro Paraclito perchè rimanga in eterno con voi, | 16 And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you for ever, |
| 17 lo Spirito cioè di verità, che il mondo non può ricevere, perchè non lo vede nè lo conosce; ma voi lo conoscerete, perchè dimorerà in voi e sarà in voi. | 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you. |
| 18 Io non vi lascerò orfani; ritornerò a voi. | 18 "I will not leave you desolate; I will come to you. |
| 19 Ancora un po', e il mondo non mi vede più; ma voi mi vedete, perchè io vivo e voi vivete. | 19 Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more, but you will see me; because I live, you will live also. |
| 20 In quel giorno conoscerete che io sono nel Padre mio, e che voi siete in me ed io in voi. | 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. |
| 21 Chi ha i miei comandamenti e li osserva, mi ama; e chi mi ama sarà amato dal Padre mio, ed io l'amerò e mi manifesterò a lui». | 21 He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him." |
| 22 Gli domandò allora Giuda, non l'Iscariote: «Signore, che è avvenuto, perchè tu debba manifestarti a noi e non al mondo?». | 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, "Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?" |
| 23 Gesù gli rispose: «Se uno mi ama, osserverà la mia parola, e il Padre mio l'amerà e verremo a lui e faremo dimora presso di lui. | 23 Jesus answered him, "If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. |
| 24 Chi non mi ama, non osserva le mie parole; ora la parola che voi ascoltaste non è mia, ma è del Padre che mi ha mandato. | 24 He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. |
| 25 Vi ho detto queste cose mentre mi trovavo ancora in mezzo a voi; | 25 "These things I have spoken to you, while I am still with you. |
| 26 ma il Paraclito, lo Spirito Santo che il Padre manderà in mio nome, egli v'insegnerà ogni cosa e vi suggerirà tutto ciò che io vi ho detto. | 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. |
| 27 Io vi lascio la pace, vi dò la mia pace. Io ve la dò, non come la dà il mondo. Il vostro cuore non si turbi nè si sgomenti. | 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. |
| 28 Avete udito ciò che vi ho detto: - Io vado e torno a voi. - Se mi amate, vi rallegrerete certo con me, perchè vado al Padre, perchè il Padre è maggiore di me. | 28 You heard me say to you, 'I go away, and I will come to you.' If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I go to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. |
| 29 Ve l'ho detto ora, prima che avvenga, perchè quando avverrà, voi crediate. | 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place, you may believe. |
| 30 Non starò a dirvi molte cose perchè viene il principe di questo mondo che nulla ha in me, | 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me; |
| 31 ma affinchè il mondo sappia che io amo il Padre e che opero come il Padre mi ha ordinato; levatevi e partiamo di qua! | 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go hence. |
