BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Allora staranno i giusti con grande sicurezza in faccia a coloro che li oppressero e depredarono le loro fatiche.	1 Then the upright will stand up boldly to face those who had oppressed him and had thought so little of his sufferings.
2 Al vederli, [gli empi] saranno agitati da tremenda paura, e stupiranno della [repentina] inaspettata salvezza.	2 And, seeing him, they wil be seized with terrible fear, amazed that he should have been sounexpectedly saved.
3 Diranno dentro di sè, presi da pentimento, e per l’angoscia dell’animo sospirando: « Questi son coloro che facemmo un tempo oggetto di risa e d'obbrobrioso motteggio,	3 Stricken with remorse, they wil say to one another with groans and labouring breath,
4 noi insensati! La vita loro stimavamo un’ insania e senza onore la loro fine.	4 'This is the one whom we used to mock, making him the butt of our insults, fools that we were! His lifewe regarded as madness, his ending as without honour.
5 Eccoli [invece] annoverati tra i figliuoli di Dio, e tra i santi è il loro retaggio!	5 How has he come to be counted as one of the children of God and to have his lot among the holy ones?
6 Errammo adunque lungi dalla via della verità, e la luce della giustizia non rifulse per noi e il sole dell'intelligenza per noi non si levò.	6 Clearly we have strayed from the way of truth; the light of justice has not shone for us, the sun has notrisen for us.
7 Ci siamo stancati pe’ sentieri dell'iniquità e della perdizione, e percorremmo strade disagevoli; ma la via del Signore non abbiam conosciuto.	7 We have left no path of lawlessness or ruin unexplored, we have crossed deserts where there was notrack, but the way of the Lord is one we have never known.
8 Che c'è giovata la superbia? o la iattanza delle ricchezze qual prò ci ha fatto?	8 What good has arrogance been to us? What has been the purpose of our riches and boastfulness?
9 Passò tutto ciò come un'ombra, come volante notizia,	9 Al those things have passed like a shadow, passed like a fleeting rumour.
10 come nave che fende l'onda agitata, di cui, passata che sia, non si scorge vestigio, nè solco della sua carena sul marosi;	10 Like a ship that cuts through heaving waves -- leaving no trace to show where it has passed, no wakefrom its keel in the waves.
11 o come uccello che vola via per l'aria, del cui viaggio nessuna traccia rimane: ma il vento leggero, battuto a colpi d'ala e rotto a forza con lo stridor delle mosse penne, fu attraversato, nè si trovò poi segno del passaggio per esso;	11 Or like a bird flying through the air -- leaving no proof of its passing; it whips the light air with the strokeof its pinions, tears it apart in its whirring rush, drives its way onward with sweeping wing, and afterwards no signis seen of its passage.
12 o come [quando], scagliata una freccia al bersaglio, l'aria divisa rifluisce subitamente in se stessa, sicché nulla [più] si sappia del percorso di quella.	12 Or like an arrow shot at a mark, the pierced air closing so quickly on itself, there is no knowing whichway the arrow has passed.
13 Così anche noi, dopo esser nati, abbiam cessato d'essere, e nessun segno di virtù potemmo mostrare, ma nella nostra iniquità ci siam consumati ».	13 So with us: scarcely born, we disappear; of virtue not a trace have we to show, we have spentourselves in our own wickedness!'
14 Così nell' inferno ragionano i peccatori.	14 For the hope of the godless is like chaff carried on the wind, like fine spray driven by the storm; itdisperses like smoke before the wind, goes away like the memory of a one-day guest.
15 Perchè la speranza dell’empio è come pula, portata dal vento, come lieve spuma dispersa dalla tempesta, come fumo dissipato dal vento, come il ricordo dell’ospite fugace d’un giorno.	15 But the upright live for ever, their recompense is with the Lord, and the Most High takes care of them.
16 Ma i giusti vivranno in eterno, e nelle mani del Signore è la lor ricompensa, e la cura di loro presso l’Altissimo.	16 So they wil receive the glorious crown and the diadem of beauty from the Lord's hand; for he wilshelter them with his right hand and with his arm he wil shield them.
17 Perciò riceveranno il regno della magnificenza e il diadema della bellezza dalla mano del Signore. Perchè con la destra li proteggerà, e col braccio suo santo li difenderà.	17 For armour he will take his jealous love, he wil arm creation to punish his enemies;
18 Prenderà come armatura il suo zelo, e armerà il creato a far vendetta de’ nemici.	18 he wil put on justice as a breastplate, and for helmet wear his forthright judgement;
19 Indosserà come corazza la giustizia, e si metterà per elmo un giudizio verace.	19 he wil take up invincible holiness for shield,
20 Prenderà per scudo invincibile Tenuità [e la santità],	20 of his pitiless wrath he will forge a sword, and the universe wil march with him to fight the reckless.
21 aguzzerà l'inflessibile ira a mo’ di spada, e l’universo combatterà con lui contro gl’ Insensati.	21 Bolts truly aimed, the shafts of lightning wil leap, and from the clouds, as from a ful -drawn bow, fly totheir mark;
22 Partiranno ben dirette le scagliate folgori, e dalle nubi, come da ben curvato arco, voleranno al bersaglio.	22 and the catapult wil hurl hailstones charged with fury. The waters of the sea wil rage against them,the rivers engulf them without pity,
23 E dalla balestrante ira [divina] dense grandini saran scagliate; si sdegnerà contro di loro l’acqua del mare, e le fiumane inonderanno violentemente.	23 a mighty gale wil rise against them and winnow them like a hurricane. Thus wickedness wil lay thewhole earth waste and evil-doing bring down the thrones of the mighty.
24 Si leverà contr’essi un soffio di potenza e come turbine di vento li disperderà.
25 un deserto ridurrà tutta la terra la loro iniquità, e la malvagità abbatterà i troni de' potentati.
