| 2 E ricordandosi delle parole dell'angelo, Tobia cavò dalla sua bisaccia un pezzo di quel fegato, e lo mise sui carboni ardenti. | 2 As he went he remembered the words of Raphael, and he took the live ashes of incense and put the heart and liver of the fish upon them and made a smoke. |
| 3 Allora l'angelo Raffaele prese il demonio, e lo confinò nel deserto dell'alto Egitto. | 3 And when the demon smelled the odor he fled to the remotest parts of Egypt, and the angel bound him. |
| 4 Indi Tobi ammonì la fanciulla, e le disse: « Levati, Sara; preghiamo Dio oggi, domani, e doman l'altro. In queste tre notti, non ci uniremo che a Dio; passata poi la terza notte, saremo marito e moglie; | 4 When the door was shut and the two were alone, Tobias got up from the bed and said, "Sister, get up, and let us pray that the Lord may have mercy upon us." |
| 5 giacché noi siamo figli di santi, e non possiamo congiungerci alla maniera de' gentili che non conoscono Dio ». | 5 And Tobias began to pray, "Blessed art thou, O God of our fathers, and blessed by thy holy and glorious name for ever. Let the heavens and all thy creatures bless thee. |
| 6 Levatisi dunque ambedue, di gran cuore pregavano insieme d'esser fatti salvi. | 6 Thou madest Adam and gavest him Eve his wife as a helper and support. From them the race of mankind has sprung. Thou didst say, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; let us make a helper for him like himself.' |
| 7 E Tobia disse. «Signore Dio de' padri nostri, ti benedicano i cieli e la terra, il mare, i fonti, i fiumi, e tutte le tue creature che in essi sono. | 7 And now, O Lord, I am not taking this sister of mine because of lust, but with sincerity. Grant that I may find mercy and may grow old together with her." |
| 8 Tu del limo della terra facesti Adamo, e gli desti Eva per aiuto. | 8 And she said with him, "Amen." |
| 9 Ed ora, Signore, tu sai che io prendo in moglie questa mia sorella, non per lussuria, ma solo per desiderio d'una posterità nella quale il nome tuo sia benedetto nei secoli de' secoli ». | 9 Then they both went to sleep for the night. But Raguel arose and went and dug a grave, |

| 11 Or quando fu vicino il canto de' galli, Raguele fece chiamare i suoi servi, e andarono insieme con lui a scavare una fossa. | 11 Then Raguel went into his house |
| 12 Diceva infatti: « Gli potrebb'esser accaduto come agli altri sette mariti che le s'accostarono ». | 12 and said to his wife Edna, "Send one of the maids to see whether he is alive; and if he is not, let us bury him without any one knowing about it." |
| 13 Preparata la fossa, tornato Raguele alla moglie le disse: | 13 So the maid opened the door and went in, and found them both asleep. |
| 14 « Manda una delle tue ancelle a vedere se è morto, ch'io lo seppellisca avanti che faccia giorno». | 14 And she came out and told them that he was alive. |
| 15 Ed essa mandò una delle sue ancelle, la quale entrata nella camera li trovò sani e salvi che insieme dormivano. | 15 Then Raguel blessed God and said, "Blessed art thou, O God, with every pure and holy blessing. Let thy saints and all thy creatures bless thee; let all thy angels and thy chosen people bless thee for ever. |
| 16 Tornata a dare la buona notizia, Raguele ed Anna sua moglie ne benedissero il Signore, | 16 Blessed art thou, because thou hast made me glad. It has not happened to me as I expected; but thou hast treated us according to thy great mercy. |
| 17 dicendo: «Ti benediciamo, Signore Dio d'Israele, perche non è avvenuto come pensavamo; | 17 Blessed art thou, because thou hast had compassion on two only children. Show them mercy, O Lord; and bring their lives to fulfilment in health and happiness and mercy." |
| 18 tu ci hai fatto misericordia, hai scacciato da noi il nemico che ci perseguitava, | 18 Then he ordered his servants to fill in the grave. |
| 19 ed hai avuto pietà di due figli unici. Fa', dicano, e t'offrano un sacrificio di lode per la loro incolumità, cosi che tutte quante le nazioni conoscano che tu solo sei il Dio di tutta la terra ». | 19 After this he gave a wedding feast for them which lasted fourteen days. |
| 20 Subito Raguele comandò a' suoi servi di riempire la fossa che avevano scavata, prima che si facesse giorno. | 20 And before the days of the feast were over, Raguel declared by oath to Tobias that he should not leave until the fourteen days of the wedding feast were ended, |
| 21 Alla moglie poi ordinò di allestire un convito, e di preparare tutto quello ch'era necessario di cibi per i viaggiatori. | 21 that then he should take half of Raguel's property and return in safety to his father, and that the rest would be his "when my wife and I die." |
| 22 Fece ammazzare due vacche grasse e quattro montoni, e preparare un banchetto a tutti i vicini ed amici. | |
| 23 Poi fece istanza a Tobia perchè rimanesse presso di lui due settimane. | |
| 24 Di tutto quello che Raguele possedeva, dette a Tobia una metà; e fece una scrittura, per la quale l'altra metà sarebbe andata in possesso di Tobia dopo la morte sua e della moglie. | |
