| 1 - Ma Eliseo disse: «Udite la parola del Signore: Queste cose ha detto il Signore: - Domani, a quest'ora un moggio di fior di farina costerà uno statere, e due moggi di orzo costeranno uno statere alla porta di Samaria -». | 1 But Elisha said, "Hear the word of the LORD: thus says the LORD, Tomorrow about this time a measure of fine meal shall be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria." |
| 2 Uno dei capi al cui braccio si appoggiava il re, rispose all'uomo di Dio: «Anche se il Signore aprisse le cateratte del cielo, potrà mai essere ciò che tu dici?». Ma Eliseo disse: «Vedrai coi tuoi occhi, ma non ne mangerai». | 2 Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned said to the man of God, "If the LORD himself should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?" But he said, "You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it." |
| 3 Eranvi quattro uomini lebbrosi alle porte della città, i quali si dissero a vicenda: «Perchè starsene qua finchè moriamo? | 3 Now there were four men who were lepers at the entrance to the gate; and they said to one another, "Why do we sit here till we die? |
| 4 Se vogliamo entrare in città, morremo di fame, se restiamo qua morremo egualmente. Andiamo dunque e passiamo all'accampamento dei Siri; se avranno misericordia di noi, vivremo; se ci vorranno uccidere, moriremo». | 4 If we say, 'Let us enter the city,' the famine is in the city, and we shall die there; and if we sit here, we die also. So now come, let us go over to the camp of the Syrians; if they spare our lives we shall live, and if they kill us we shall but die." |
| 5 Essi partirono verso sera e vennero all'accampamento dei Siri. Quando giunsero all'entrata del campo, non vi incontrarono persona, | 5 So they arose at twilight to go to the camp of the Syrians; but when they came to the edge of the camp of the Syrians, behold, there was no one there. |
| 6 poichè il Signore aveva fatto intendere nell'accampamento dei Siri dei rumori di carri e di cavalli e di un esercito numeroso, onde si erano detti a vicenda: «Ecco il re d'Israele ha assoldato contro di noi i re degli Etei e degli Egiziani, e vengono per attaccarci». | 6 For the Lord had made the army of the Syrians hear the sound of chariots, and of horses, the sound of a great army, so that they said to one another, "Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to come upon us." |
| 7 Si levarono adunque e fuggirono durante la notte; e lasciando le loro tende e i loro cavalli e gli asini nell'accampamento, fuggirono, cercando solo di salvare la propria vita. | 7 So they fled away in the twilight and forsook their tents, their horses, and their asses, leaving the camp as it was, and fled for their lives. |
| 8 Giunti dunque i lebbrosi all'ingresso del campo, entrarono in una tenda e mangiarono e bevettero, e presero di là oro, argento, e vesti, poi se ne andarono a nasconderle. Ritornati quindi a un'altra tenda, anche di là portaron via roba che andarono a nascondere. | 8 And when these lepers came to the edge of the camp, they went into a tent, and ate and drank, and they carried off silver and gold and clothing, and went and hid them; then they came back, and entered another tent, and carried off things from it, and went and hid them. |
| 9 Ma poi si dissero a vicenda: «Noi non facciamo bene; questo è giorno di buone notizie: se noi taceremo e non le vorremo annunziare fino al mattino, saremo incolpati di delitto. Venite, andiamo ad annunziare la cosa alla casa del re». | 9 Then they said to one another, "We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news; if we are silent and wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us; now therefore come, let us go and tell the king's household." |
| 10 Venuti adunque alla porta della città, narrarono la cosa dicendo: «Siamo stati all'accampamento dei Siri, e non vi abbiamo trovato nessuno, ma soltanto cavalli e asini legati e le tende piantate». | 10 So they came and called to the gatekeepers of the city, and told them, "We came to the camp of the Syrians, and behold, there was no one to be seen or heard there, nothing but the horses tied, and the asses tied, and the tents as they were." |
| 11 Andarono adunque i portieri ad annunziare la cosa al palazzo del re. | 11 Then the gatekeepers called out, and it was told within the king's household. |
| 12 Il re si levò di notte e disse ai suoi servi: «Vi dirò io ciò che hanno fatto i Siri. Sapendo che noi soffriamo la fame, saranno usciti dall'accampamento, e si terranno nascosti nei campi, e diranno: - Quando saranno usciti dalla città, li prenderemo vivi, e allora potremo entrare nella città -». | 12 And the king rose in the night, and said to his servants, "I will tell you what the Syrians have prepared against us. They know that we are hungry; therefore they have gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the open country, thinking, 'When they come out of the city, we shall take them alive and get into the city.'" |
| 13 Ma uno dei suoi servi rispose: «Prendiamo i cinque cavalli che son rimasti in città (poichè questi soli erano rimasti in tutta la moltitudine d'Israele, essendo stati gli altri distrutti) e mandiamoli ad esplorare». | 13 And one of his servants said, "Let some men take five of the remaining horses, seeing that those who are left here will fare like the whole multitude of Israel that have already perished; let us send and see." |
| 14 Condussero dunque due cavalli, e il re li mandò nell'accampamento dei Siri, dicendo: «Andate a vedere». | 14 So they took two mounted men, and the king sent them after the army of the Syrians, saying, "Go and see." |
| 15 Essi andarono dietro ai nemici fino al Giordano e videro tutta la via piena di vesti e di tutte le suppellettili che erano state gettate via dai Siri per il grande spavento. Al loro ritorno i messi riferirono la cosa al re. | 15 So they went after them as far as the Jordan; and, lo, all the way was littered with garments and equipment which the Syrians had thrown away in their haste. And the messengers returned, and told the king. |
| 16 Allora il popolo saccheggiò l'accampamento dei Siri e un moggio di fior di farina costò un solo statere, e parimenti due moggi di orzo furono pagati uno statere, secondo la parola del Signore. | 16 Then the people went out, and plundered the camp of the Syrians. So a measure of fine meal was sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, according to the word of the LORD. |
| 17 Ora il re, aveva incaricato di custodire la porta lo stesso capitano, al braccio del quale egli si appoggiava; ma la folla lo schiacciò all'ingresso della porta, ed egli morì, secondo quanto aveva detto l'uomo di Dio, quando il re era andato da lui. | 17 Now the king had appointed the captain on whose hand he leaned to have charge of the gate; and the people trod upon him in the gate, so that he died, as the man of God had said when the king came down to him. |
| 18 E avvenne quindi secondo la parola dall'uomo di Dio proferita innanzi al re, quando disse: «Due moggi d'orzo costeranno uno statere e un moggio di fior di farina uno statere, domani, a quest'ora, alla porta di Samaria». | 18 For when the man of God had said to the king, "Two measures of barley shall be sold for a shekel, and a measure of fine meal for a shekel, about this time tomorrow in the gate of Samaria," |
| 19 E poichè quel capo aveva risposto all'uomo di Dio e aveva detto: «Anche se il Signore aprisse le cateratte del cielo, potrà mai accadere quel che tu dici?», il profeta aveva risposto: «Tu vedrai co' tuoi occhi, ma non ne mangerai». | 19 the captain had answered the man of God, "If the LORD himself should make windows in heaven, could such a thing be?" And he had said, "You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it." |
| 20 Accadde adunque a lui come gli era stato predetto, poichè il popolo lo schiacciò alla porta, ed egli morì. | 20 And so it happened to him, for the people trod upon him in the gate and he died. |
