1 Allora tornammo indietro e ci incamminammo verso il deserto in direzione del Mar Rosso, come il Signore mi aveva detto, e per lungo tempo girammo intorno alla montagna di Seir.	1 "When we did turn and proceed into the desert on the Red Sea road, as the LORD had commanded me, we circled around the highlands of Seir for a long time.
2 Il Signore mi disse:	2 Finally the LORD said to me,
3 “Avete girato abbastanza intorno a questa montagna; volgetevi verso settentrione.	3 'You have wandered round these highlands long enough; turn and go north.
4 Da’ quest’ordine al popolo: Voi state per passare i confini dei figli di Esaù, vostri fratelli, che dimorano in Seir; essi avranno paura di voi, ma state molto attenti:	4 Give this order to the people: You are now about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. Though they are afraid of you, be very careful
5 non muovete loro guerra, perché della loro terra io non vi darò neppure quanto ne può calcare la pianta di un piede; infatti ho dato la montagna di Seir in proprietà a Esaù.	5 not to come in conflict with them, for I will not give you so much as a foot of their land, since I have already given Esau possession of the highlands of Seir.
6 Comprerete da loro con denaro le vettovaglie che mangerete e comprerete da loro con denaro anche l’acqua che berrete,	6 You shall purchase from them with silver the food you eat and the well water you drink.
7 perché il Signore, tuo Dio, ti ha benedetto in ogni lavoro delle tue mani, ti ha seguito nel tuo viaggio attraverso questo grande deserto. Il Signore, tuo Dio, è stato con te in questi quarant’anni e non ti è mancato nulla”.	7 The LORD, your God, has blessed you in all your undertakings; he has been concerned about your journey through this vast desert. It is now forty years that he has been with you, and you have never been in want.'
8 Allora passammo oltre i nostri fratelli, i figli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir, lungo la via dell’Araba, per Elat ed Esion-Ghèber. Poi piegammo e avanzammo in direzione del deserto di Moab.	8 "Then we left behind us the Arabah route, Elath, Ezion-geber, and Seir, where our kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, live; and we went on toward the desert of Moab.
9 Il Signore mi disse: “Non attaccare Moab e non gli muovere guerra, perché io non ti darò nulla da possedere nella sua terra; infatti ho dato Ar ai figli di Lot, come loro proprietà”.	9 And the LORD said to me, 'Do not show hostility to the Moabites or engage them in battle, for I will not give you possession of any of their land, since I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their own.
10 Prima vi abitavano gli Emìm, popolo grande, numeroso, alto di statura come gli Anakiti.	10 (Formerly the Emim lived there, a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim;
11 Erano anch’essi considerati Refaìm, come gli Anakiti, ma i Moabiti li chiamavano Emìm.	11 like them they were considered Rephaim. It was the Moabites who called them Emim.
12 Anche in Seir prima abitavano gli Urriti, ma i figli di Esaù li scacciarono, li distrussero e si stabilirono al posto loro, come ha fatto Israele nella terra che possiede e che il Signore gli ha dato.	12 In Seir, however, the former inhabitants were the Horites; the descendants of Esau dispossessed them, clearing them out of the way and taking their place, just as the Israelites have done in the land of their heritage which the LORD has given them.)
13 “Ora alzatevi e attraversate il torrente Zered!”. E attraversammo il torrente Zered.	13 Get ready, then, to cross the Wadi Zered.' So we crossed it.
14 La durata del nostro cammino, da Kades-Barnea al passaggio del torrente Zered, fu di trentotto anni, finché tutta quella generazione di uomini atti alla guerra scomparve dall’accampamento, come il Signore aveva loro giurato.	14 Thirty-eight years had elapsed between our departure from Kadesh-barnea and that crossing; in the meantime the whole generation of soldiers had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn they should.
15 Anche la mano del Signore era stata contro di loro, per sterminarli dall’accampamento fino ad annientarli.	15 For it was the LORD'S hand that was against them, till he wiped them out of the camp completely.
16 Quando da mezzo al popolo scomparvero per morte tutti quegli uomini atti alla guerra,	16 "When at length death had put an end to all the soldiers among the people,
17 il Signore mi disse:	17 the LORD said to me,
18 “Oggi tu stai per attraversare i confini di Moab, ad Ar,	18 'You are now about to leave Ar and the territory of Moab behind.
19 e ti avvicinerai agli Ammoniti. Non li attaccare e non muover loro guerra, perché io non ti darò nessun possesso nella terra degli Ammoniti; infatti l’ho data in proprietà ai figli di Lot”.	19 As you come opposite the Ammonites, do not show hostility or come in conflict with them, for I will not give you possession of any land of the Ammonites, since I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their own.
20 Anche questa terra era reputata terra dei Refaìm: prima vi abitavano i Refaìm e gli Ammoniti li chiamavano Zamzummìm,	20 (This also was considered a country of the Rephaim from its former inhabitants, whom the Ammonites called Zamzummim,
21 popolo grande, numeroso, alto di statura come gli Anakiti; ma il Signore li aveva distrutti davanti agli Ammoniti, che li avevano scacciati e si erano stabiliti al loro posto.	21 a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim. But these, too, the LORD cleared out of the way for the Ammonites, who ousted them and took their place.
22 Allo stesso modo il Signore aveva fatto per i figli di Esaù che abitano in Seir, quando distrusse gli Urriti davanti a loro; essi li scacciarono e si stabilirono al loro posto e vi sono rimasti fino ad oggi.	22 He had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who dwell in Seir, by clearing the Horites out of their way, so that the descendants of Esau have taken their place down to the present.
23 Anche gli Avviti, che dimoravano in villaggi fino a Gaza, furono distrutti dai Caftoriti, usciti da Caftor, i quali si stabilirono al loro posto.	23 So also the Caphtorim, migrating from Caphtor, cleared away the Avvim, who once dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, and took their place.)
24 “Alzatevi, levate l’accampamento e attraversate il torrente Arnon; ecco, io metto in tuo potere Sicon, l’Amorreo, re di Chesbon, e la sua terra; comincia a prenderne possesso e muovigli guerra.	24 "'Advance now across the Wadi Arnon. I now deliver into your hands Sihon, the Amorite king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin the occupation; engage him in battle.
25 Da quest'oggi comincerò a incutere paura e terrore di te nei popoli che sono sotto tutti i cieli, così che, all’udire la tua fama, tremeranno e saranno presi da spavento dinanzi a te”.	25 This day I will begin to put a fear and dread of you into every nation under the heavens, so that at the mention of your name they will quake and tremble before you.'
26 Allora mandai messaggeri dal deserto di Kedemòt a Sicon, re di Chesbon, con parole di pace, per dirgli:	26 "So I sent messengers from the desert of Kedemoth to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with this offer of peace:
27 “Lasciami passare nella tua terra; io camminerò per la strada maestra, senza volgermi né a destra né a sinistra.	27 'Let me pass through your country by the highway; I will go along it without turning aside to the right or to the left.
28 Tu mi venderai per denaro le vettovaglie che mangerò e mi darai per denaro l’acqua che berrò; permettimi solo il transito,	28 For the food I eat which you will supply, and for the water you give me to drink, you shall be paid in silver. Only let me march through,
29 come mi hanno permesso i figli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir, e i Moabiti, che abitano ad Ar, finché io abbia passato il Giordano verso la terra che il Signore, nostro Dio, sta per darci”.	29 as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar have done, until I cross the Jordan into the land which the LORD, our God, is about to give us.'
30 Ma Sicon, re di Chesbon, non volle lasciarci passare, perché il Signore, tuo Dio, gli aveva reso inflessibile lo spirito e ostinato il cuore, per metterlo nelle tue mani, come appunto è oggi.	30 But Sihon, king of Heshbon, refused to let us pass through his land, because the LORD, your God, made him stubborn in mind and obstinate in heart that he might deliver him up to you, as indeed he has now done.
31 Il Signore mi disse: “Vedi, ho cominciato a mettere in tuo potere Sicon e la sua terra; da’ inizio alla conquista impadronendoti della sua terra”.	31 "Then the LORD said to me, 'Now that I have already begun to hand over to you Sihon and his land, begin the actual occupation.'
32 Allora Sicon uscì contro di noi con tutta la sua gente per darci battaglia a Iaas.	32 So Sihon and all his people advanced against us to join battle at Jahaz;
33 Il Signore, nostro Dio, ce lo consegnò e noi sconfiggemmo lui, i suoi figli e tutta la sua gente.	33 but since the LORD, our God, had delivered him to us, we defeated him and his sons and all his people.
34 In quel tempo prendemmo tutte le sue città e votammo allo sterminio ogni città, uomini, donne e bambini; non vi lasciammo alcun superstite.	34 At that time we seized all his cities and doomed them all, with their men, women and children; we left no survivor.
35 Soltanto prelevammo per noi come preda il bestiame e le spoglie delle città che avevamo preso.	35 Our only booty was the livestock and the loot of the captured cities.
36 Da Aroèr, che è sulla riva del torrente Arnon, e dalla città che è nella valle, fino a Gàlaad, non ci fu città che fosse inaccessibile per noi: il Signore, nostro Dio, le mise tutte in nostro potere.	36 From Aroer on the edge of the Wadi Arnon and from the city in the wadi itself, as far as Gilead, no city was too well fortified for us to whom the LORD had delivered them up.
37 Ma non ti avvicinasti alla terra degli Ammoniti, a tutta la riva del torrente Iabbok, alle città delle montagne, a tutti i luoghi che il Signore, nostro Dio, ci aveva proibito.	37 However, in obedience to the command of the LORD, our God, you did not encroach upon any of the Ammonite land, neither the region bordering on the Wadi Jabbok, nor the cities of the highlands.
