1 Queste sono le parole che Mosè rivolse a tutto Israele oltre il Giordano, nel deserto, nell’Araba, di fronte a Suf, tra Paran, Tofel, Laban, Caseròt e Di-Zaab.	1 These are the words, which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan, in the plain wilderness, over against the Red Sea, between Pharan and Thophel and Laban and Haseroth, where there is very much gold:
2 Vi sono undici giornate di cammino dall’Oreb, per la via del monte Seir, fino a Kades-Barnea.	2 Eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Cadesbarne.
3 Nel quarantesimo anno, l’undicesimo mese, il primo giorno del mese, Mosè riferì agli Israeliti quanto il Signore gli aveva ordinato per loro,	3 In the fortieth year, the eleventh month, the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel all that the Lord had commanded him to say to them:
4 dopo avere sconfitto Sicon, re degli Amorrei, che abitava a Chesbon, e Og, re di Basan, che abitava ad Astaròt, a Edrei.	4 After that he had slain Sehon king of the Amorrhites, who dwelt in Hesebon: and Og king of Basan who abode in Astaroth, and in Edrai,
5 Oltre il Giordano, nella terra di Moab, Mosè cominciò a spiegare questa legge:
6 «Il Signore, nostro Dio, ci ha parlato sull’Oreb e ci ha detto: “Avete dimorato abbastanza su questa montagna;	6 l And you answered me: We have sinned against the Lord: we will go up and fight, as the Lord our God hath commanded. And when you went ready armed unto the mountain,
7 voltatevi, levate l’accampamento e dirigetevi verso le montagne degli Amorrei e verso tutte le regioni vicine: l’Araba, le montagne, la Sefela, il Negheb, la costa del mare – che è la terra dei Cananei e del Libano – fino al grande fiume, il fiume Eufrate.	7 Beyond the Jordan in the land of Moab. And Moses began to expound the law, and to say:
8 Ecco, io ho posto davanti a voi la terra. Entrate e prendete possesso della terra che il Signore aveva giurato ai vostri padri, ad Abramo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe, di dar loro e alla loro stirpe dopo di loro”.	8 The Lord our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying: You have stayed long enough in this mountain:
9 In quel tempo io vi ho parlato e vi ho detto: “Io non posso da solo sostenere il peso di tutti voi.	9 Turn you, and come to the mountain of the Amorrhites, and to the other places that are next to it, the plains and the hills and the vales towards the south, and by the sea shore, the land of the Chanaanites, and of Libanus, as far as the great river Euphrates.
10 Il Signore, vostro Dio, vi ha moltiplicati ed eccovi numerosi come le stelle del cielo.	10 Behold, said he, I have delivered it to you: go in and possess it, concerning which the Lord swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that he would give it to them, and to their seed after them.
11 Il Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, vi aumenterà mille volte di più e vi benedirà come vi ha promesso.	11 And I said to you at that time:
12 Ma come posso io da solo portare il vostro peso, il vostro carico e le vostre liti?	12 I alone am not able to bear you: for the Lord your God hath multiplied you, and you are this day as the stars of heaven, for multitude.
13 Sceglietevi nelle vostre tribù uomini saggi, intelligenti e stimati, e io li costituirò vostri capi”.	13 (The Lord God of your fathers add to this number many thousands, and bless you as he hath spoken.)
14 Voi mi rispondeste: “Va bene ciò che dici di fare”.	14 I alone am not able to bear your business, and the charge of you and your differences.
15 Allora presi i capi delle vostre tribù, uomini saggi e stimati, e li stabilii sopra di voi come capi: capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine, capi di decine, e come scribi per le vostre tribù.	15 Let me have from among you wise and understanding men, and such whose conversation is approved among your tribes, that I may appoint them your rulers.
16 In quel tempo diedi quest’ordine ai vostri giudici: “Ascoltate le cause dei vostri fratelli e decidete con giustizia fra un uomo e suo fratello o lo straniero che sta presso di lui.	16 Then you answered me: The thing is good which thou meanest to do.
17 Nei vostri giudizi non avrete riguardi personali, darete ascolto al piccolo come al grande; non temerete alcun uomo, poiché il giudizio appartiene a Dio; le cause troppo difficili per voi le presenterete a me e io le ascolterò”.	17 And I took out of your tribes men wise and honourable, and appointed them rulers, tribunes, and centurions, and officers over fifties, and over tens, who might teach you all things.
18 In quel tempo io vi ordinai tutte le cose che dovevate fare.	18 And I commanded them, saying: Hear them, and judge that which is just: whether he be one of your country, or a stranger.
19 Poi partimmo dall’Oreb e attraversammo tutto quel deserto grande e spaventoso che avete visto, dirigendoci verso le montagne degli Amorrei, come il Signore, nostro Dio, ci aveva ordinato, e giungemmo a Kades-Barnea.	19 There shall be no difference of persons, you shall hear the little as well as the great: neither shall you respect any man's person, because it is the judgment of God. And if any thing seem hard to you, refer it to me, and I will hear it.
20 Allora vi dissi: “Siete arrivati presso la montagna degli Amorrei, che il Signore, nostro Dio, sta per darci.	20 And I commanded you all things that you were to do.
21 Ecco, il Signore, tuo Dio, ti ha posto la terra dinanzi: entra, prendine possesso, come il Signore, Dio dei tuoi padri, ti ha detto; non temere e non ti scoraggiare!”.	21 And departing from Horeb, we passed through the terrible and vast wilderness, which you saw, by the way of the mountain of the Amorrhite, as the Lord our God had commanded us. And when we were come into Cadesbarne,
22 Voi tutti vi accostaste a me e diceste: “Mandiamo innanzi a noi uomini che esplorino la terra e ci riferiscano sul cammino per il quale dovremo procedere e sulle città nelle quali dovremo entrare”.	22 I said to you: You are come to the mountain of the Amorrhite, which the Lord our God will give to us.
23 La proposta mi piacque e scelsi dodici uomini tra voi, uno per tribù.	23 See the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee: go up and possess it, as the Lord our God hath spoken to thy fathers: fear not, nor be any way discouraged.
24 Quelli si incamminarono, salirono verso i monti, giunsero alla valle di Escol ed esplorarono il paese.	24 And you came all to me, and said: Let us send men who may view the land, and bring us word what way we shall go up, and to what cities we shall go.
25 Presero con le loro mani dei frutti della terra, ce li portarono e ci fecero questa relazione dicendo: “Buona è la terra che il Signore, nostro Dio, sta per darci”.	25 And because the saying pleased me, I sent of you twelve men, one of every tribe:
26 Ma voi non voleste entrarvi e vi ribellaste all’ordine del Signore, vostro Dio;	26 Who, when they had set forward and had gone up to the mountains, came as far as the valley of the cluster: and having viewed the land,
27 mormoraste nelle vostre tende e diceste: “Il Signore ci odia, per questo ci ha fatto uscire dalla terra d’Egitto per darci in mano agli Amorrei e sterminarci.	27 Taking of the fruits thereof, to shew its fertility, they brought them to us, and said: The land is good, which the Lord our God will give us.
28 Dove possiamo andare noi? I nostri fratelli ci hanno scoraggiati dicendo: Quella gente è più grande e più alta di noi, le città sono grandi e fortificate fino al cielo; abbiamo visto là perfino dei figli degli Anakiti”.	28 And you would not go up, but being incredulous to the word of the Lord our God,
29 Allora vi dissi: “Non spaventatevi e non abbiate paura di loro.	29 You murmured in your tents, and said: The Lord hateth us, and therefore he hath brought us out of the land of Egypt, that he might deliver us into the hand of the Amorrhite, and destroy us.
30 Il Signore, vostro Dio, che vi precede, egli stesso combatterà per voi, come insieme a voi ha fatto, sotto i vostri occhi, in Egitto	30 Whither shall we go up? the messengers have terrified our hearts, saying: The multitude is very great, and taller than we: the cities are great, and walled up td the sky, we have seen the sons of the Enacims there.
31 e nel deserto, dove hai visto come il Signore, tuo Dio, ti ha portato, come un uomo porta il proprio figlio, per tutto il cammino che avete fatto, finché siete arrivati qui”.	31 And I said to you: Fear not, neither be ye afraid of them:
32 Nonostante questo, non aveste fiducia nel Signore, vostro Dio,	32 The Lord God, who is your leader, himself will fight for you, as he did in Egypt in the sight of all.
33 che andava innanzi a voi nel cammino per cercarvi un luogo dove porre l’accampamento: di notte nel fuoco, per mostrarvi la via dove andare, e di giorno nella nube.	33 And in the wilderness (as thou hast seen) the Lord thy God hath carried thee, as a man is wont to carry his little son, all the way that you have come, until you came to this place.
34 Il Signore udì il suono delle vostre parole, si adirò e giurò:	34 And yet for all this you did not believe the Lord your God,
35 “Nessuno degli uomini di questa generazione malvagia vedrà la buona terra che ho giurato di dare ai vostri padri,	35 Who went before you in the way, and marked out the place, wherein you should pitch your tents, in the night shewing you the way by fire, and in the day by the pillar of a cloud.
36 se non Caleb, figlio di Iefunnè. Egli la vedrà e a lui e ai suoi figli darò la terra su cui ha camminato, perché ha pienamente seguito il Signore”.	36 And when the Lord had heard the voice of your words, he was angry and swore, and said:
37 Anche contro di me si adirò il Signore, per causa vostra, e disse: “Neanche tu vi entrerai,	37 Not one of the men of this wicked generation shall see the good land, which I promised with an oath to your fathers:
38 ma vi entrerà Giosuè, figlio di Nun, che sta al tuo servizio; incoraggialo, perché egli la metterà in possesso d'Israele.	38 Except Caleb the son of Jephone: for he shall see it, and to him I will give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath followed the Lord.
39 Anche i vostri bambini, dei quali avevate detto che sarebbero divenuti oggetto di preda, e i vostri figli, che oggi non conoscono né il bene né il male, essi vi entreranno; a loro la darò ed essi la possederanno.	39 Neither is his indignation against the people to be wondered at, since the Lord was angry with me also on your account, and said: Neither shalt thou go in thither.
40 Ma voi tornate indietro e incamminatevi verso il deserto, in direzione del Mar Rosso”.	40 But Josue the son of Nun, thy minister, he shall go in for thee: exhort and encourage him, and he shall divide the land by lot to Israel.
41 Allora voi mi rispondeste: “Abbiamo peccato contro il Signore! Saliremo e combatteremo come il Signore, nostro Dio, ci ha ordinato”. Ognuno di voi cinse le armi e presumeste di salire verso la montagna.	41 Your children, of whom you said that they should be led away captives, and your sons who know not this day the difference of good and evil, they shall go in: and to them I will give the land, and they shall possess it.
42 Il Signore mi disse: “Ordina loro: Non salite e non combattete, perché io non sono in mezzo a voi, e sarete sconfitti davanti ai vostri nemici”.	42 But return you and go into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.
43 Io ve lo dissi, ma voi non mi ascoltaste; anzi vi ribellaste all’ordine del Signore, foste presuntuosi e saliste verso i monti.	43 dummy verses inserted by amos
44 Allora gli Amorrei, che abitano quella montagna, uscirono contro di voi, vi inseguirono come fanno le api e vi batterono in Seir fino a Corma.	44 The Lord said to me: Say to them: Go not up, and fight not, for I am not with you: lest you fall before your enemies.
45 Voi tornaste e piangeste davanti al Signore; ma il Signore non diede ascolto alla vostra voce e non vi porse l’orecchio.	45 I spoke, and you hearkened not: but resisting the commandment of the Lord, and swelling with pride, you went up into the mountain.
46 Così rimaneste a Kades molti giorni, per tutto il tempo in cui vi siete rimasti.	46 And the Amorrhite that dwelt in the mountains coming out, and meeting you, chased you, as bees do: and made slaughter of you from Seir as far as Horma.
	47 And when you returned and wept before the Lord, he heard you not, neither would he yield to ;your voice.
