1 Signore onnipotente, Dio d’Israele, un’anima nell’angoscia, uno spirito tormentato grida verso di te.	1 "LORD Almighty, God of Israel, afflicted souls and dismayed spirits call to you.
2 Ascolta, Signore, abbi pietà, perché abbiamo peccato contro di te.	2 Hear, O LORD, for you are a God of mercy; and have mercy on us, who have sinned against you:
3 Tu regni per sempre, noi per sempre siamo perduti.	3 for you are enthroned forever, while we are perishing forever.
4 Signore onnipotente, Dio d’Israele, ascolta dunque la supplica dei morti d’Israele, dei figli di coloro che hanno peccato contro di te: essi non hanno ascoltato la voce del Signore, loro Dio, e siamo stati attaccati dai mali.	4 LORD Almighty, God of Israel, hear the prayer of Israel's few, the sons of those who sinned against you; they did not heed the voice of the LORD, their God, and the evils cling to us.
5 Non ricordare le ingiustizie dei nostri padri, ma ricòrdati ora della tua potenza e del tuo nome,	5 Remember at this time not the misdeeds of our fathers, but your own hand and name:
6 poiché tu sei il Signore, nostro Dio, e noi ti loderemo, Signore.	6 for you are the LORD our God; and you, O LORD, we will praise!
7 Per questo tu hai posto il timore di te nei nostri cuori, perché invocassimo il tuo nome. E ti loderemo nel nostro esilio, perché abbiamo allontanato dal nostro cuore tutta l’ingiustizia dei nostri padri, i quali hanno peccato contro di te.	7 For this, you put into our hearts the fear of you: that we may call upon your name, and praise you in our captivity, when we have removed from our hearts all the wickedness of our fathers who sinned against you.
8 Eccoci ancora oggi nel nostro esilio, dove tu ci hai disperso, oggetto di obbrobrio, di maledizione e di condanna per tutte le ingiustizie dei nostri padri, che si sono ribellati al Signore, nostro Dio».	8 Behold us today in our captivity, where you scattered us, a reproach, a curse, and a requital for all the misdeeds of our fathers, who withdrew from the LORD, our God."
9 Ascolta, Israele, i comandamenti della vita, porgi l’orecchio per conoscere la prudenza.	9 Hear, O Israel, the commandments of life: listen, and know prudence!
10 Perché, Israele? Perché ti trovi in terra nemica e sei diventato vecchio in terra straniera?	10 How is it, Israel, that you are in the land of your foes, grown old in a foreign land, Defiled with the dead,
11 Perché ti sei contaminato con i morti e sei nel numero di quelli che scendono negli inferi?	11 accounted with those destined for the nether world?
12 Tu hai abbandonato la fonte della sapienza!	12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom!
13 Se tu avessi camminato nella via di Dio, avresti abitato per sempre nella pace.	13 Had you walked in the way of God, you would have dwelt in enduring peace.
14 Impara dov’è la prudenza, dov’è la forza, dov’è l’intelligenza, per comprendere anche dov’è la longevità e la vita, dov’è la luce degli occhi e la pace.	14 Learn where prudence is, where strength, where understanding; That you may know also where are length of days, and life, where light of the eyes, and peace.
15 Ma chi ha scoperto la sua dimora, chi è penetrato nei suoi tesori?	15 Who has found the place of wisdom, who has entered into her treasuries?
16 Dove sono i capi delle nazioni, quelli che dominano le belve che sono sulla terra?	16 Where are the rulers of the nations, they who lorded it over the wild beasts of the earth,
17 Coloro che si divertono con gli uccelli del cielo, quelli che ammassano argento e oro, in cui hanno posto fiducia gli uomini, e non c’è un limite ai loro possessi?	17 and made sport of the birds of the heavens: They who heaped up the silver and the gold in which men trust; of whose possessions there was no end?

19 Sono scomparsi, sono scesi negli inferi e altri hanno preso il loro posto.	19 They have vanished down into the nether world, and others have risen up in their stead.
20 Generazioni più giovani hanno visto la luce e hanno abitato sopra la terra, ma non hanno conosciuto la via della sapienza,	20 Later generations have seen the light, have dwelt in the land, But the way to understanding they have not known,
21 non hanno compreso i suoi sentieri e non si sono occupate di essa; i loro figli si sono allontanati dalla loro via.	21 they have not perceived her paths, or reached her; their offspring were far from the way to her.
22 Non se n’è sentito parlare in Canaan, non si è vista in Teman.	22 She has not been heard of in Canaan, nor seen in Teman.
23 I figli di Agar, che cercano la sapienza sulla terra, i mercanti di Merra e di Teman, i narratori di favole, i ricercatori dell’intelligenza non hanno conosciuto la via della sapienza, non si sono ricordati dei suoi sentieri.	23 The sons of Hagar who seek knowledge on earth, the merchants of Midian and Teman, the phrasemakers seeking knowledge, These have not known the way to wisdom, nor have they her paths in mind.
24 O Israele, quanto è grande la casa di Dio, quanto è esteso il luogo del suo dominio!	24 O Israel, how vast is the house of God, how broad the scope of his dominion:
25 È grande e non ha fine, è alto e non ha misura!	25 Vast and endless, high and immeasurable!
26 Là nacquero i famosi giganti dei tempi antichi, alti di statura, esperti nella guerra;	26 In it were born the giants, renowned at the first, stalwarts, skilled in war.
27 ma Dio non scelse costoro e non diede loro la via della sapienza:	27 Not these did God choose, nor did he give them the way of understanding;
28 perirono perché non ebbero saggezza, perirono per la loro indolenza.	28 They perished for lack of prudence, perished through their folly.
29 Chi è salito al cielo e l’ha presa e l’ha fatta scendere dalle nubi?	29 Who has gone up to the heavens and taken her, or brought her down from the clouds?
30 Chi ha attraversato il mare e l’ha trovata e l’ha comprata a prezzo d’oro puro?	30 Who has crossed the sea and found her, bearing her away rather than choice gold?
31 Nessuno conosce la sua via, nessuno prende a cuore il suo sentiero.	31 None knows the way to her, nor has any understood her paths.
32 Ma colui che sa tutto, la conosce e l’ha scrutata con la sua intelligenza, colui che ha formato la terra per sempre e l’ha riempita di quadrupedi,	32 Yet he who knows all things knows her; he has probed her by his knowledge-- He who established the earth for all time, and filled it with four-footed beasts;
33 colui che manda la luce ed essa corre, l’ha chiamata, ed essa gli ha obbedito con tremore.	33 He who dismisses the light, and it departs, calls it, and it obeys him trembling;
34 Le stelle hanno brillato nei loro posti di guardia e hanno gioito;	34 Before whom the stars at their posts shine and rejoice;
35 egli le ha chiamate ed hanno risposto: «Eccoci!», e hanno brillato di gioia per colui che le ha create.	35 When he calls them, they answer, "Here we are!" shining with joy for their Maker.

38 Per questo è apparsa sulla terra e ha vissuto fra gli uomini.	38 Since then she has appeared on earth, and moved among men.
