1 Signore onnipotente, Dio d’Israele, un’anima nell’angoscia, uno spirito tormentato grida verso di te.	1 “ ‘And now, O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, the soul in anguish and the troubled spirit cry out to you.
2 Ascolta, Signore, abbi pietà, perché abbiamo peccato contro di te.	2 Listen, O Lord, and be merciful, for you are a merciful God, and so be merciful to us, for we have sinned before you.
3 Tu regni per sempre, noi per sempre siamo perduti.	3 For you are enthroned in eternity, but we will pass away in time.
4 Signore onnipotente, Dio d’Israele, ascolta dunque la supplica dei morti d’Israele, dei figli di coloro che hanno peccato contro di te: essi non hanno ascoltato la voce del Signore, loro Dio, e siamo stati attaccati dai mali.	4 O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, listen now to the prayer of the dead of Israel and of their sons, who have sinned before you and have not listened to the voice of the Lord their God, and have joined themselves to evil.
5 Non ricordare le ingiustizie dei nostri padri, ma ricòrdati ora della tua potenza e del tuo nome,	5 Remember not the iniquities of our fathers, but remember your hand and your name at this time.
6 poiché tu sei il Signore, nostro Dio, e noi ti loderemo, Signore.	6 For you are the Lord our God, and we will praise you, O Lord.
7 Per questo tu hai posto il timore di te nei nostri cuori, perché invocassimo il tuo nome. E ti loderemo nel nostro esilio, perché abbiamo allontanato dal nostro cuore tutta l’ingiustizia dei nostri padri, i quali hanno peccato contro di te.	7 And for this reason, you have imparted your fear into our hearts, and also, so that we may call upon your name and may praise you in our captivity, for we are converted from the iniquity of our fathers, who sinned before you.
8 Eccoci ancora oggi nel nostro esilio, dove tu ci hai disperso, oggetto di obbrobrio, di maledizione e di condanna per tutte le ingiustizie dei nostri padri, che si sono ribellati al Signore, nostro Dio».	8 And, behold, we are still in our captivity on this day, where you have scattered us into disgrace, and into slander, and into sin, according to all the iniquities of our fathers, who withdrew from you, O Lord our God.
9 Ascolta, Israele, i comandamenti della vita, porgi l’orecchio per conoscere la prudenza.	9 Listen, O Israel, to the commandments of life! Pay attention, so that you may learn prudence!
10 Perché, Israele? Perché ti trovi in terra nemica e sei diventato vecchio in terra straniera?	10 How is it, O Israel, that you are in the land of your enemies,
11 Perché ti sei contaminato con i morti e sei nel numero di quelli che scendono negli inferi?	11 that you have grown old in a foreign land, that you are defiled with the dead, that you are regarded as among those who are descending into hell?
12 Tu hai abbandonato la fonte della sapienza!	12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom.
13 Se tu avessi camminato nella via di Dio, avresti abitato per sempre nella pace.	13 For if you had walked in the way of God, you would certainly have lived in everlasting peace.
14 Impara dov’è la prudenza, dov’è la forza, dov’è l’intelligenza, per comprendere anche dov’è la longevità e la vita, dov’è la luce degli occhi e la pace.	14 Learn where prudence is, where virtue is, where understanding is, so that you may know at the same time where long life and prosperity are, where the light of the eyes and peace are.
15 Ma chi ha scoperto la sua dimora, chi è penetrato nei suoi tesori?	15 Who has discovered its place? And who has entered its treasure chamber?
16 Dove sono i capi delle nazioni, quelli che dominano le belve che sono sulla terra?	16 Where are the leaders of the peoples, and those who rule over the beasts that are upon the earth,
17 Coloro che si divertono con gli uccelli del cielo, quelli che ammassano argento e oro, in cui hanno posto fiducia gli uomini, e non c’è un limite ai loro possessi?	17 who play among the birds of the air,
18 Coloro che lavorano l’argento e lo cesellano senza rivelare il segreto dei loro lavori?	18 who store up treasures of silver and gold, in which men trust, and with whom there is no end to their acquiring, who work with silver and are anxious about it, and whose works are inexplicable?
19 Sono scomparsi, sono scesi negli inferi e altri hanno preso il loro posto.	19 They have been banished and have descended to hell, and others are risen up in their place.
20 Generazioni più giovani hanno visto la luce e hanno abitato sopra la terra, ma non hanno conosciuto la via della sapienza,	20 The youth have seen the light and have dwelt upon the earth, yet they are ignorant of the way of instruction.
21 non hanno compreso i suoi sentieri e non si sono occupate di essa; i loro figli si sono allontanati dalla loro via.	21 They have neither understood the paths of it, nor have their sons accepted it. It is far from their face.
22 Non se n’è sentito parlare in Canaan, non si è vista in Teman.	22 It has not been heard of in the land of Canaan, nor has it been seen in Teman.
23 I figli di Agar, che cercano la sapienza sulla terra, i mercanti di Merra e di Teman, i narratori di favole, i ricercatori dell’intelligenza non hanno conosciuto la via della sapienza, non si sono ricordati dei suoi sentieri.	23 It is likewise with the sons of Hagar, who search for the practicality that is of the earth, the negotiators of Merran and Teman, and the storytellers, and the searchers of discretion and intelligence. Yet the way of wisdom they have not known, nor have they called to mind its paths.
24 O Israele, quanto è grande la casa di Dio, quanto è esteso il luogo del suo dominio!	24 O Israel, how great is the house of God, and how vast is the place of his possession!
25 È grande e non ha fine, è alto e non ha misura!	25 It is great and has no end! It is exalted and immense!
26 Là nacquero i famosi giganti dei tempi antichi, alti di statura, esperti nella guerra;	26 There were those who were called giants, who existed from the beginning, of great stature, expert in war.
27 ma Dio non scelse costoro e non diede loro la via della sapienza:	27 The Lord did not choose them, nor did they discover the way of instruction; for this reason they perished,
28 perirono perché non ebbero saggezza, perirono per la loro indolenza.	28 and, because they did not have wisdom, they passed away as a result of their foolishness.
29 Chi è salito al cielo e l’ha presa e l’ha fatta scendere dalle nubi?	29 Who has gone up into heaven, and taken her, and brought her down from the clouds?
30 Chi ha attraversato il mare e l’ha trovata e l’ha comprata a prezzo d’oro puro?	30 Who has crossed the sea, and found her, and brought her, chosen instead of gold?
31 Nessuno conosce la sua via, nessuno prende a cuore il suo sentiero.	31 There is no one who is able to know her ways, nor any who can search out her paths.
32 Ma colui che sa tutto, la conosce e l’ha scrutata con la sua intelligenza, colui che ha formato la terra per sempre e l’ha riempita di quadrupedi,	32 Yet he who knows the universe is familiar with her, and in his foresight he invented her, he who prepared the earth for time without end, and filled it with cattle and four-footed beasts,
33 colui che manda la luce ed essa corre, l’ha chiamata, ed essa gli ha obbedito con tremore.	33 who sends out the light, and it goes, and who summoned it, and it obeyed him in fear.
34 Le stelle hanno brillato nei loro posti di guardia e hanno gioito;	34 Yet the stars have given light from their posts, and they rejoiced.
35 egli le ha chiamate ed hanno risposto: «Eccoci!», e hanno brillato di gioia per colui che le ha create.	35 They were called, and so they said, “Here we are,” and they shined with cheerfulness to him who made them.
36 Egli è il nostro Dio, e nessun altro può essere confrontato con lui.	36 This is our God, and no other can compare to him.
37 Egli ha scoperto ogni via della sapienza e l’ha data a Giacobbe, suo servo, a Israele, suo amato.	37 He invented the way of all instruction, and delivered it to Jacob his child, and to Israel his beloved.
38 Per questo è apparsa sulla terra e ha vissuto fra gli uomini.	38 After this, he was seen on earth, and he conversed with men.
