1 Un altro male ho visto sotto il sole, che grava molto sugli uomini.	1 I see another evil under the sun, which goes hard with people:
2 A uno Dio ha concesso beni, ricchezze, onori e non gli manca niente di quanto desidera; ma Dio non gli concede di poterne godere, anzi sarà un estraneo a divorarli. Ciò è vanità e grave malanno.	2 suppose someone has received from God riches, property, honours -- nothing at al left to wish for; butGod does not give the chance to enjoy them, and some stranger enjoys them. This is futile, and grievoussuffering too.
3 Se uno avesse cento figli e vivesse molti anni e molti fossero i giorni della sua vita, se egli non gode a sazietà dei suoi beni e non ha neppure una tomba, allora io dico che l’aborto è meglio di lui.	3 Or take someone who has had a hundred children and lived for many years, and, having reached oldage, has never enjoyed the good things of life and has not even got a tomb; it seems to me, a still-born child ishappier.
4 Questi infatti viene come un soffio, se ne va nella tenebra e l’oscurità copre il suo nome,	4 In futility it came, into darkness it departs, and in darkness will its name be buried.
5 non vede neppure il sole, non sa niente; così è nella quiete, a differenza dell’altro!	5 It has never so much as seen or known the sun; al the same, it wil rest more easily than that person,
6 Se quell’uomo vivesse anche due volte mille anni, senza godere dei suoi beni, non dovranno forse andare tutti e due nel medesimo luogo?	6 who would never have known the good things of life, even by living a thousand years twice over. Do wenot al go to the same place in the end?
7 Tutta la fatica dell’uomo è per la bocca, ma la sua fame non è mai sazia.	7 Al toil is for the mouth, yet the appetite is never satisfied.
8 Quale vantaggio ha il saggio sullo stolto? Qual è il vantaggio del povero nel sapersi destreggiare nella vita?	8 What advantage has the wise over the fool? And what of the pauper who knows how to behave insociety?
9 Meglio vedere con gli occhi che vagare con il desiderio. Anche questo è vanità e un correre dietro al vento.	9 Better the object seen than the sting of desire: for the latter too is futile and chasing after the wind.
10 Ciò che esiste, da tempo ha avuto un nome, e si sa che cos’è un uomo: egli non può contendere in giudizio con chi è più forte di lui.	10 What has been is already defined -- we know what people are: They cannot bring to justice one who isstronger than themselves.
11 Più aumentano le parole, più cresce il vuoto, e quale utilità c’è per l’uomo?	11 The more we say, the more futile it is: what good can we derive from it?
12 Chi sa quel che è bene per l’uomo durante la sua vita, nei pochi giorni della sua vana esistenza, che passa via come un’ombra? Chi può indicare all’uomo che cosa avverrà dopo di lui sotto il sole?	12 And who knows what is best for someone during life, during the days of futile life which are spent like ashadow? Who can tel anyone what wil happen after him under the sun?
