1 Nell’anno centocinquantuno Demetrio, figlio di Seleuco, partì da Roma e sbarcò con pochi uomini in una città della costa, dove si proclamò re.	1 In the year 151, Demetrius son of Seleucus left Rome and arrived with a few men at a town on thecoast, where he inaugurated his reign.
2 Quando rientrò nella reggia dei suoi padri, l’esercito catturò Antioco e Lisia per consegnarglieli.	2 It so happened that, as he was entering the royal residence of his ancestors, the army capturedAntiochus and Lysias, and intended to bring them to him.
3 Informato della cosa, disse: «Non mostratemi la loro faccia».	3 On hearing this, he said, 'Keep them out of my sight.'
4 Perciò i soldati li uccisero e Demetrio sedette sul trono del suo regno.	4 The army put them to death, and Demetrius ascended his throne.
5 Allora andarono da lui tutti gli uomini iniqui e rinnegati d’Israele, guidati da Àlcimo, che aspirava al sommo sacerdozio.	5 Next, al those Israelites without law or piety, led by Alcimus, whose ambition was to become highpriest,
6 Essi accusarono il popolo davanti al re, dicendo: «Giuda con i suoi fratelli ha sterminato tutti i tuoi amici e ci ha strappato dal nostro paese.	6 approached the king and denounced our people to him. 'Judas and his brothers', they said, 'have kil edal your friends, and he has driven us out of our country.
7 Ora manda un uomo fidato che venga e prenda visione della rovina generale procurata da lui a noi e ai domìni del re e provveda a punire quella famiglia e tutti i suoi sostenitori».	7 Send someone now whom you can trust; let him go and see the wholesale ruin Judas has brought onus and on the king's dominions, and let him punish the wretches and al who assist them.'
8 Il re designò Bàcchide, uno degli amici del re, preposto alla regione dell’Oltrefiume, potente nel regno e fedele al re,	8 The king chose Bacchides, one of the Friends of the King, governor of Transeuphrates, an importantpersonage in the kingdom and loyal to the king.
9 e lo inviò con il rinnegato Àlcimo; attribuì a questi il sommo sacerdozio e gli diede ordine di fare vendetta contro gli Israeliti.	9 He sent him with the godless Alcimus, whom he confirmed in the high priesthood, with orders to exactretribution from the Israelites.
10 Così partirono e giunsero in Giudea con forze numerose. Bàcchide mandò messaggeri a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli, per portare con inganno parole di pace.	10 So they set out with a large force and, on reaching Judaea, sent emissaries to Judas and his brotherswith proposals peaceable yet treacherous.
11 Ma essi non credettero alle loro parole: avevano infatti saputo che erano giunti con un forte esercito.	11 The latter, however, did not put any faith in their words, aware that they had come with a large force.
12 Un gruppo di scribi si radunò tuttavia presso Àlcimo e Bàcchide, per chiedere il riconoscimento dei diritti.	12 Nevertheless, a commission of scribes presented themselves before Alcimus and Bacchides, to suefor just terms.
13 Gli Asidei furono i primi tra gli Israeliti a chiedere loro la pace.	13 The first among the Israelites to ask them for peace terms were the Hasidaeans,
14 Dicevano infatti: «Un sacerdote della stirpe di Aronne è venuto con i soldati, non ci farà certo del male».	14 who reasoned thus, 'This is a priest of Aaron's line who has come with the armed forces; he wil notwrong us.'
15 Egli usò con loro parole di pace e giurò loro: «Non faremo alcun male né a voi né ai vostri amici».	15 He did in fact discuss peace terms with them and gave them his oath, 'We shal not attempt to injureyou or your friends.'
16 E quelli gli credettero. Ma egli prese sessanta di loro e li uccise in un solo giorno, proprio secondo la parola che sta scritta:	16 They believed him, but he arrested sixty of them and put them to death on one day, fulfil ing the wordsof scripture:
17 «Le carni dei tuoi fedeli e il loro sangue hanno versato intorno a Gerusalemme e nessuno li seppelliva».	17 They have scattered the bodies of your faithful, and shed their blood all round Jerusalem, leaving noone to bury them!
18 Allora la paura e il terrore si sparsero per tutto il popolo, perché dicevano: «Non c’è in loro verità né giustizia, perché hanno trasgredito il patto e il giuramento prestato».	18 At this, fear and dread gripped the whole people. 'There is no truth or virtue in them,' they said, 'theyhave broken their agreement and their sworn oath.'
19 Bàcchide poi levò il campo da Gerusalemme e si accampò a Bet-Zait; mandò ad arrestare molti degli uomini che erano passati dalla sua parte e alcuni del popolo, e li fece uccidere e gettare in un grande pozzo.	19 Bacchides then left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Zeth, and from there sent and arrested many ofthe men who had deserted him and a few of our people too; he had them kil ed and thrown down the great wel .
20 Affidò il paese ad Àlcimo e gli lasciò soldati che lo sostenessero; quindi Bàcchide fece ritorno dal re.	20 He then put Alcimus in charge of the province, leaving an army with him to support him; Bacchideshimself returned to the king.
21 Àlcimo lottava per il sommo sacerdozio;	21 Alcimus continued his struggle to become high priest,
22 i perturbatori del popolo si unirono tutti a lui, si impadronirono della Giudea e procurarono grandi sventure a Israele.	22 and al who were disturbing the peace of their own people ral ied to him, and, having won control ofJudaea, did much harm in Israel.
23 Giuda vide tutti i mali che Àlcimo e i suoi fautori facevano agli Israeliti, peggio dei pagani;	23 Seeing that al the wrongs done to the Israelites by Alcimus and his supporters exceeded what thegentiles had done,
24 uscì allora nelle regioni intorno alla Giudea, fece vendetta degli uomini che avevano disertato e impedì loro di fare scorrerie nella regione.	24 Judas went right round the whole territory of Judaea to take vengeance on those who had desertedhim and to prevent their free movement about the country.
25 Quando Àlcimo vide che Giuda e i suoi si erano rinforzati e che non avrebbe potuto resistere loro, ritornò presso il re e li accusò di cose malvagie.	25 When Alcimus saw how strong Judas and his supporters had grown and realised that he waspowerless to resist them, he went back to the king, to whom he made malicious accusations against them.
26 Allora il re mandò Nicànore, uno dei suoi capi più illustri, che nutriva odio e inimicizia per Israele, e gli ordinò di sterminare il popolo.	26 The king sent Nicanor, one of his generals ranking as Il ustrious and a bitter enemy of Israel, withorders to exterminate the people.
27 Nicànore venne a Gerusalemme con truppe ingenti e mandò messaggeri a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli, a far queste proposte ingannevoli di pace:	27 Reaching Jerusalem with a large force, Nicanor sent a friendly, yet treacherous, message to Judasand his brothers, as follows:
28 «Non ci sia battaglia tra me e voi. Verrò con pochi uomini, per incontrarmi con voi pacificamente».	28 'Let us have no fighting between you and me; I shall come with a smal escort for a peaceful meetingwith you.'
29 Venne da Giuda e si salutarono a vicenda con segni di pace: ma i nemici stavano pronti per metter le mani su Giuda.	29 He met Judas and they exchanged friendly greetings; the enemy, however, had made preparations toabduct Judas.
30 Quando Giuda fu informato che quello era venuto da lui con inganno, ebbe timore di lui e non volle più vedere la sua faccia.	30 When Judas became aware of Nicanor's treacherous purpose in coming to see him, he took fright andrefused any further meeting.
31 Nicànore allora, come vide che il suo piano era stato scoperto, uscì all’attacco contro Giuda verso Cafarsalamà,	31 Nicanor then realised that his plan had been discovered, and took the field against Judas, to givebattle near Caphar-Salama.
32 e caddero dalla parte di Nicànore circa cinquecento uomini. Poi ripararono nella Città di Davide.	32 About five hundred of Nicanor's men fell; the rest took refuge in the City of David.
33 Dopo questi fatti Nicànore salì al monte Sion e gli vennero incontro dal santuario alcuni sacerdoti e anziani del popolo, per salutarlo con espressioni di pace e mostrargli l’olocausto offerto per il re.	33 After these events Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests came out of the Holy Placewith some elders, to give him a friendly welcome and show him the burnt offering being presented for the king.
34 Ma egli li schernì, li derise, anzi li oltraggiò e parlò con arroganza;	34 But he ridiculed them, laughed at them, defiled them and used insolent language, swearing in hisrage,
35 giurò incollerito: «Se non sarà consegnato subito Giuda e il suo esercito nelle mie mani, quando tornerò a guerra finita, darò alle fiamme questo tempio». E se ne andò tutto furioso.	35 'Unless Judas is handed over to me this time with his army, as soon as I am safely back, I promiseyou, I shal burn this building down!'
36 I sacerdoti rientrarono e stando davanti all’altare e al tempio dissero piangendo:	36 Then he went off in a fury. At this, the priests went in again, and stood weeping in front of the altarand the Temple, saying,
37 «Tu hai scelto questo tempio, perché su di esso fosse invocato il tuo nome e fosse casa di orazione e di supplica per il tuo popolo.	37 'You have chosen this house to be cal ed by your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for yourpeople.
38 Fa’ vendetta di quest’uomo e delle sue schiere; siano trafitti di spada. Ricòrdati delle loro bestemmie: non lasciarli sopravvivere».	38 Take vengeance on this man and on his army, and let them fal by the sword; remember theirblasphemies and give them no respite.'
39 Nicànore uscì da Gerusalemme, si accampò a Bet-Oron e l’esercito della Siria gli andò incontro.	39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Horon, where he was joined by an army from Syria.
40 Giuda pose il campo in Adasà con tremila uomini e pregò:	40 Judas, meanwhile, camped at Adasa with three thousand men, and offered this prayer,
41 «Quando gli ufficiali del re assiro lanciarono bestemmie, venne il tuo angelo e ne abbatté centoottantacinquemila:	41 'When the king's envoys blasphemed, your angel went out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men.
42 abbatti allo stesso modo questo esercito davanti a noi oggi; sappiano gli altri che egli ha parlato empiamente contro il tuo santuario e giudicalo secondo la sua malvagità».	42 In the same way let us see you crush this army today, so that everyone else may know that this manhas spoken blasphemously against your sanctuary: pass judgement on him as his wickedness deserves!'
43 Si scontrarono gli eserciti in combattimento il tredici del mese di Adar e fu sconfitto l’esercito di Nicànore, anzi egli cadde in battaglia per primo.	43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth of the month Adar, and Nicanor's army was crushed, hehimself being the first to fal in the battle.
44 Quando i suoi soldati videro che Nicànore era caduto, gettarono le armi e fuggirono.	44 When Nicanor's soldiers saw him fal , they threw down their arms and fled.
45 Li inseguirono per una giornata di cammino, da Adasà fino a Ghezer, suonando le trombe dietro a loro per dare l’allarme.	45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to the approaches of Gezer; they sounded theirtrumpets in warning as they fol owed them,
46 Uscirono allora uomini da tutti i villaggi circostanti della Giudea e li accerchiarono; essi si voltavano gli uni contro gli altri e caddero tutti di spada: non ne scampò neppure uno.	46 and people came out of al the surrounding Judaean vil ages to encircle the fugitives, who then turnedback on their own men. Al fel by the sword, not one being left alive.
47 I Giudei presero le spoglie e il bottino, mozzarono la testa di Nicànore e la sua destra, che aveva steso con arroganza, e le portarono nei pressi di Gerusalemme, dove le esposero.	47 Having col ected the spoils and booty, they cut off Nicanor's head and the right hand he had stretchedout in a display of insolence; these were taken and displayed within sight of Jerusalem.
48 Il popolo fece gran festa e trascorse quel giorno come un solenne giorno di gioia.	48 The people were overjoyed and kept that day as a great holiday:
49 Stabilirono di celebrare ogni anno questo giorno il tredici di Adar.	49 indeed they decided to celebrate it annual y on the thirteenth of Adar.
50 Così la Giudea rimase tranquilla per un po’ di tempo.	50 For a short while Judaea enjoyed peace.
