1 Antioco, figlio del re Demetrio, inviò lettere dalle isole del mare a Simone, sacerdote ed etnarca dei Giudei, e a tutta la nazione;	1 Antiochus son of King Demetrius addressed a letter from the Mediterranean Isles to Simon, priest andethnarch of the Jews, and to the whole nation;
2 il loro contenuto era del seguente tenore: «Il re Antioco a Simone, grande sacerdote ed etnarca, e al popolo dei Giudei, salute!	2 this was how it read: 'King Antiochus to Simon, high priest and ethnarch, and to the Jewish nation,greetings.
3 Poiché alcuni uomini pestiferi si sono impadroniti del regno dei nostri padri, voglio rivendicare i miei diritti sul regno, per ricostruirlo com’era prima; ho reclutato un esercito ingente di mercenari e allestito navi da guerra.	3 'Whereas certain scoundrels have seized control of the kingdom of our fathers, and I propose to claimback the kingdom so that I may re-establish it as it was before, and whereas I have accordingly recruited verylarge forces and fitted out warships,
4 È mia volontà sbarcare nella regione, per punire coloro che hanno rovinato il nostro paese e desolato molte città nel mio regno.	4 intending to make a landing in the country and to hunt down the men who have ruined it and laidwaste many towns in my kingdom;
5 Ora ti confermo tutte le esenzioni, che ti hanno concesso i re miei predecessori, e tutte le altre dispense dai doni.	5 'I now, therefore, confirm in your favour al remissions of taxes granted to you by the kings mypredecessors, as wel as the waiving of whatever presents they may have conceded.
6 Ti concedo di battere moneta propria con corso legale al tuo paese.	6 I hereby authorise you to mint your own coinage as legal tender for your own country.
7 Gerusalemme e il suo santuario siano liberi; tutti gli armamenti, che hai preparato, e le fortezze che hai costruito e occupi, restino in tuo possesso.	7 I declare Jerusalem and the sanctuary to be free; all the arms you have manufactured and thefortresses you have built and now occupy may remain yours.
8 Quanto devi al re e i debiti che potrai avere verso il re in avvenire da ora e per sempre, ti sono rimessi.	8 Al debts to the royal treasury, present or future, are cancel ed henceforth in perpetuity.
9 Quando poi avremo preso possesso del nostro regno, onoreremo te, la tua nazione e il tempio con grandi onori, così da rendere manifesta la vostra gloria in tutta la terra».	9 Furthermore, when we have won back our kingdom, we shall bestow such great honour on yourself,your nation and the sanctuary as wil make your glory known throughout the world.'
10 Nell’anno centosettantaquattro Antioco partì per la terra dei suoi padri e si schierarono con lui tutte le milizie, di modo che pochi rimasero con Trifone.	10 Antiochus invaded the land of his ancestors in the year 174 and, since the troops all rallied to him,Trypho was left with few supporters.
11 Antioco si diede ad inseguirlo e quello, fuggendo, giunse fino a Dora sul mare,	11 Antiochus pursued the usurper, who took refuge in Dora on the coast,
12 perché vedeva che i mali si addensavano su di lui, mentre le truppe lo abbandonavano.	12 knowing that misfortunes were piling up on him and that his troops had deserted him.
13 Antioco pose il campo contro Dora, avendo con sé centoventimila armati e ottomila cavalieri.	13 Antiochus pitched camp outside Dora with a hundred and twenty thousand fighting men and eightthousand cavalry.
14 Egli circondò la città, mentre le navi attaccavano dal mare; fece pressione contro la città dalla terra e dal mare, non lasciando più entrare né uscire alcuno.	14 He laid siege to the city while the ships closed in from the sea, so that he had the city under attackfrom land and sea, and al owed no one to go in or come out.
15 Intanto arrivarono da Roma Numenio e i suoi compagni, portando lettere per i re dei vari paesi. Esse dicevano:	15 Numenius and his companions, meanwhile, arrived from Rome, bringing letters addressed to variouskings and states, in the fol owing terms:
16 «Lucio, console dei Romani, al re Tolomeo, salute!	16 'Lucius, consul of the Romans, to King Ptolemy, greetings.
17 Gli ambasciatori dei Giudei sono giunti a noi come nostri amici e alleati, per rinnovare l’antica amicizia e alleanza, inviati da Simone, sommo sacerdote, e dal popolo dei Giudei.	17 'The Jewish ambassadors have come to us as our friends and al ies to renew our original friendshipand alliance in the name of the high priest Simon and the Jewish people.
18 Hanno portato uno scudo d’oro di mille mine.	18 They have brought a golden shield worth a thousand mina.
19 Ci è sembrato bene perciò scrivere ai re dei vari paesi, perché non facciano loro del male, né facciano guerra alle loro città o alla loro regione, né combattano insieme a chi entri in guerra con loro.	19 Accordingly, we have seen fit to write to various kings and states, warning them neither to molest theJewish people nor to attack either them or their towns or their country, nor to al y themselves with any suchaggressors.
20 Ci è parso bene accettare da loro lo scudo.	20 We have seen fit to accept the shield from them.
21 Se pertanto uomini pestiferi sono fuggiti dalla loro regione presso di voi, consegnateli a Simone, sommo sacerdote, perché ne faccia giustizia secondo la loro legge».	21 If, therefore, any scoundrels have fled their country to take refuge with you, hand them over to Simonthe high priest, to be punished by him according to their law.'
22 Uguali espressioni scrissero al re Demetrio, ad Àttalo, ad Ariarate e Arsace	22 The consul sent the same letter to King Demetrius, to Attalus, Ariarathes and Arsaces,
23 e a tutti i paesi: a Sampsame, agli Spartani, a Delo, a Mindo, a Sicione, alla Caria, a Samo, alla Panfìlia, alla Licia, ad Alicarnasso, a Rodi, a Fasèlide, a Coo, a Side, ad Arado, a Gòrtina, a Cnido, a Cipro e a Cirene.	23 and to all states, including Sampsames, the Spartans, Delos, Myndos, Sicyon, Caria, Samos,Pamphylia, Lycia, Halicarnassus, Rhodes, Phaselis, Cos, Side, Arados, Gortyn, Cyprus and Cyrene.
24 Copia di queste lettere scrissero per Simone, sommo sacerdote.	24 They also drew up a copy for Simon the high priest.
25 Il re Antioco, dunque, teneva il campo contro Dora da due giorni, lanciando continuamente contro di essa le schiere e costruendo macchine; così aveva precluso a Trifone ogni possibilità di uscire ed entrare.	25 Antiochus, meanwhile, from his positions on the outskirts of Dora, was continual y throwingdetachments against the town. He constructed siege-engines, and blockaded Trypho, preventing movement inor out.
26 Simone gli inviò duemila uomini scelti, per combattere al suo fianco, oltre ad argento, oro e molti equipaggiamenti.	26 Simon sent him two thousand picked men to support him in the fight, with silver and gold and plentyof equipment.
27 Ma Antioco non volle accettare nulla, anzi ritirò quanto aveva prima concesso a Simone e si mostrò ostile con lui.	27 But Antiochus would not accept them; instead, he repudiated al his previous agreements with Simonand completely changed his attitude to him.
28 Poi gli inviò Atenòbio, uno dei suoi amici, a trattare con lui in questi termini: «Voi occupate Giaffa, Ghezer e la Cittadella di Gerusalemme, tutte città del mio regno.	28 He sent him Athenobius, one of his Friends, to confer with him and say, 'You are now occupyingJoppa and Gezer and the Citadel in Jerusalem, which are towns in my kingdom.
29 Avete devastato il loro territorio e avete causato rovina grande nel paese e vi siete impadroniti di molte località nel mio regno.	29 You have laid waste their territory and done immense harm to the country; and you have seizedcontrol of many places properly in my kingdom.
30 Ora, perciò, consegnate le città che avete occupato, insieme con i tributi delle località di cui vi siete impadroniti fuori del territorio della Giudea,	30 Either now surrender the towns you have taken and the taxes from the places you have seizedoutside the frontiers of Judaea,
31 oppure dateci in cambio cinquecento talenti d’argento e, in compenso dei danni arrecati e dei tributi delle città, altri cinquecento talenti; altrimenti verremo e vi muoveremo guerra».	31 or else pay me five hundred talents of silver in compensation for them and for the destruction youhave done, and another five hundred talents for the taxes from the towns; otherwise we shall come and makewar on you.'
32 Atenòbio, l’amico del re, si recò a Gerusalemme e vide la gloria di Simone, il vasellame con lavori in oro e argento e il suo grande fasto e ne rimase meravigliato. Gli riferì le parole del re,	32 When the King's Friend, Athenobius, reached Jerusalem and saw Simon's magnificence, his cabinetof gold and silver plate and the state he kept, he was dumbfounded. He delivered the king's message,
33 ma Simone gli rispose: «Non abbiamo occupato terra straniera né ci siamo impossessati di beni altrui, ma dell’eredità dei nostri padri, che fu occupata un tempo dai nostri nemici senza alcun diritto.	33 but Simon gave him this answer, 'We have not taken foreign territory or any alien property but haveoccupied our ancestral heritage, for some time unjustly wrested from us by our enemies;
34 Noi, avendone avuta l’opportunità, abbiamo recuperato l’eredità dei nostri padri.	34 now that we have a favourable opportunity, we are merely recovering our ancestral heritage.
35 Quanto a Giaffa e a Ghezer, che tu reclami, esse causavano un grave danno tra il popolo e nella nostra regione: per esse vi daremo cento talenti».	35 As regards Joppa and Gezer, which you claim, these were towns that did great harm to our peopleand laid waste our country; we are prepared to give a hundred talents for them.' Without so much as a word inanswer,
36 Atenòbio non rispose nulla, ma indispettito tornò presso il re, al quale riferì quelle parole, la gloria di Simone e quanto aveva visto. Il re si adirò grandemente.	36 the envoy went back to the king in a rage and reported on Simon's answer and his magnificence,and on everything he had seen, at which the king fel into a fury.
37 Trifone intanto, salito su una nave, fuggì a Ortosìa.	37 Trypho now boarded a ship and escaped to Orthosia.
38 Il re allora nominò Cendebeo primo stratega della zona litoranea e mise al suo comando forze di fanteria e cavalleria.	38 The king appointed Cendebaeus military governor of the coastal region and al otted him a force ofinfantry and cavalry.
39 Poi gli ordinò di accamparsi in vista della Giudea e gli ordinò di ricostruire Cedron, rinforzandone le porte, e di iniziare la guerra contro il popolo. Il re intanto continuò la caccia a Trifone.	39 He ordered him to deploy his men facing Judaea, and instructed him to rebuild Kedron and fortify itsgates, and to make war on our people, while the king himself went in pursuit of Trypho.
40 Cendebeo si recò a Iàmnia e cominciò a molestare il popolo, a invadere la Giudea, a fare prigionieri tra il popolo e a metterli a morte.	40 Cendebaeus arrived at Jamnia and began to provoke our people forthwith, invading Judaea, takingprisoners, and massacring.
41 Ricostruì Cedron e vi dispose la cavalleria e le truppe, perché potessero uscire e battere le strade della Giudea, come gli aveva ordinato il re.	41 Having rebuilt Kedron, he stationed cavalry and troops there to make sorties and patrol the roads ofJudaea, as the king had ordered.
