1 L'insonnia per la ricchezza logora il corpo, l'affanno per essa distoglie il sonno.	1 The sleeplessness brought by wealth makes a person lose weight, the worry it causes drives awaysleep.
2 L'affanno della veglia tien lontano l'assopirsi, come una grave malattia bandisce il sonno.	2 The worries of the daytime prevent you from sleeping, like a serious il ness, they keep sleep at bay.
3 Un ricco fatica nell'accumulare ricchezze e se smette, si ingolfa nei piaceri.	3 The rich for ever toils, piling up money, and then, leaving off, he is gorged with luxuries;
4 Un povero fatica nelle privazioni della vita e se smette, cade nell'indigenza.	4 the poor for ever toils, barely making a living, and then, leaving off, is poorer than ever.

10 Chi ha subìto la prova, risultando perfetto? Sarà un titolo di gloria per lui. Who has had thechance to sin and has not sinned, had the chance to do wrong and has not done it?
11 Si consolideranno i suoi beni e l'assemblea celebrerà le sue beneficenze.	11 His fortune wil be firmly based and the assembly wil acclaim his generosity.
12 Hai davanti una tavola sontuosa? Non spalancare verso di essa la tua bocca e non dire: "Che abbondanza qua sopra".	12 If you are sitting down to a lavish table, do not display your greed, do not say, 'What a lot to eat!'
13 Ricòrdati che l'occhio cattivo è un male. Che cosa è stato creato peggiore dell'occhio? Per questo esso lacrima in ogni circostanza.	13 Remember, it is bad to have a greedy eye. Is any creature more wicked than the eye? - That is why itis always weeping!

17 Sii il primo a smettere per educazione, non essere ingordo per non incorrere nel disprezzo.	17 For politeness' sake be the first to stop; do not act the glutton, or you will give offence,
18 Se siedi tra molti invitati, non essere il primo a stendere la mano.	18 and if you are sitting with a large party, do not help yourself before the others do.
19 Quanto poco è sufficiente per un uomo educato, una volta a letto non si sente soffocato.	19 A little is quite enough for a wel -bred person; his breathing is easy when he lies in bed.
20 Sonno salubre con uno stomaco ben regolato, al mattino si alza e il suo spirito è libero. Travaglio di insonnia, coliche e vomiti accompagnano l'uomo ingordo.	20 A moderate diet ensures sound sleep, one gets up early, in the best of spirits. Sleeplessness,biliousness and gripe are what the glutton has to endure.
21 Se sei stato forzato a eccedere nei cibi, àlzati, va' a vomitare e sarai sollevato.	21 If you are forced to eat too much, get up, go and vomit, and you will feel better.
22 Ascoltami, figlio, e non disprezzarmi, alla fine troverai vere le mie parole. In tutte le azioni sii moderato e nessuna malattia ti coglierà.	22 Listen to me, my child, do not disregard me, eventually you wil see the force of my words. Bemoderate in al your activities and il ness wil never overtake you.
23 Molte labbra loderanno chi è splendido nei banchetti, e vera è la testimonianza della sua munificenza.	23 People praise the person who keeps a splendid table, and their opinion of his munificence is sound.
24 La città mormora di chi è tirchio nei banchetti; ed esatta è la testimonianza della sua avarizia.	24 But a niggardly host provokes universal resentment and people wil retail instances of his meanness.
25 Non fare il forte con il vino, perché ha mandato molti in rovina.	25 Do not play the valiant at your wine, for wine has been the undoing of many.
26 La fornace prova il metallo nella tempera, così il vino i cuori in una sfida di arroganti.	26 The furnace proves the temper of steel, and wine proves hearts in the drinking bouts of braggarts.

29 Amarezza dell'anima è il vino bevuto in quantità, con eccitazione e per sfida.	29 Bitterness of soul comes of wine drunk to excess out of temper or bravado.
30 L'ubriachezza accresce l'ira dello stolto a sua rovina, ne diminuisce le forze e gli procura ferite.	30 Drunkenness excites the stupid to a fury to his own harm, it reduces his strength while leading toblows.
31 Durante un banchetto non rimproverare il vicino, non deriderlo nella sua letizia. Non dirgli parola di rimprovero e non tormentarlo col chiedergli ciò che ti deve.	31 Do not provoke your fel ow-guest at a wine feast, do not make fun of him when he is enjoying himself, do not take him to task or annoy him by reclaiming money owed.
