| 1 Io dico la verità in Cristo: non mentisco e la mia coscienza me ne dà testimonianza nello Spirito Santo: | 1 I am speaking the truth in Christ, I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit, |
| 2 provo una grande tristezza e un dolore continuo nel mio cuore. | 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. |
| 3 Oh! sì, mi augurerei d’essere i0 stesso maledetto; separato. da Cristo per i miei fratelli e parenti secondo la carne. | 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen by race. |
| 4 Perché essi sono degli Israeliti. Ad essi appartiene l’adozione, la presenza gloriosa di Dio, le alleanze, la legislazione, il culto, le promesse. | 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; |
| 5 Loro gloria sono i patriarchi e da essi discende, vanto alla carne, il Cristo il quale è al di sopra di tutto, Dio benedetto per tutti i secoli. Amen! | 5 to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ. God who is over all be blessed for ever. Amen. |
| 6 Non che la parola di Dio sia» diventata caduca, ma non tutti i discendenti di Israele. sono Israele; | 6 But it is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, |
| 7 né tutti son figli di Abramo per il fatto d’essere sua progenie. Come è scritto: Da Isacco prenderà il nome la tua discendenza, | 7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his descendants; but "Through Isaac shall your descendants be named." |
| 8 e cioè: non tutti i figli carnali sono figli di Dio; bensì solo i figli della promessa sono considerati come posterità. | 8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are reckoned as descendants. |
| 9 Ecco, infatti, i termini della promessa: Passerò intorno a questo tempo e Sara avrà un figlio. | 9 For this is what the promise said, "About this time I will return and Sarah shall have a son." |
| 10 E non è tutto. Anche Rebecca concepì da un sol uomo, cioè da Isacco, nostro padre. | 10 And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, |
| 11 Eppure, quando i suoi gemelli non erano ancora nati né avevano compiuto alcunchè di bene o di male, onde s’imponesse il decreto fondato sulla libera scelta di Dio, | 11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad, in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of his call, |
| 12 legato non alle opere ma alla volontà di colui che chiama, le fu detto: Il maggiore servirà al più giovane, | 12 she was told, "The elder will serve the younger." |
| 13 conformemente a ciò che sta scritto: Ho amato Giacobbe ed ho odiato Esaù. | 13 As it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." |
| 14 Che diremo, dunque? Vi sarebbe forse ingiustizia presso Dio? Certo no! | 14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God's part? By no means! |
| 15 Poiché egli dice a Mosè: Uso misericordia a chi uso misericordia, ed ho compassione di chi ho compassione. | 15 For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." |
| 16 Non è quindi affare né di chi vuole né di chi corre; ma della misericordia divina. | 16 So it depends not upon man's will or exertion, but upon God's mercy. |
| 17 Ancora Dio dice al faraone: Ti ho suscitato appunto per mostrare in te la mia potenza e perché il mio nome sia celebrato su tutta la terra. | 17 For the scripture says to Pharaoh, "I have raised you up for the very purpose of showing my power in you, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth." |
| 18 Pertanto egli usa misericordia a chi vuole, e indurisce chi vuole. | 18 So then he has mercy upon whomever he wills, and he hardens the heart of whomever he wills. |
| 19 Tu allora mi dirai: «Se è così, perché egli biasima ancora? Chi può resistere al suo volere?» | 19 You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?" |
| 20 O uomo, chi sei tu dunque per dispurare con Dio? Un oggetto di creta dirà forse: «Perché mi hai fatto così?» a chi l’ha modellato? | 20 But who are you, a man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me thus?" |
| 21 Il vasaio non può disporre liberamente dell’argilla e formare dalla stessa massa qui un vaso d’ornamento e là uno volgare? | 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for beauty and another for menial use? |
| 22 E che dunque, se Dio, volendo mostrare la sua ira e manifestare la sua potenza, ha tollerato con immensa longanimità vasi provocanti la sua ira, già pronti per la perdizione, | 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience the vessels of wrath made for destruction, |
| 23 per rendere nota alfine la ricchezza della sua gloria verso i vasi della sua misericordia, preparati da lui per la gloria? | 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for the vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory, |
| 24 E questi vasi di misericordia siamo noi che egli chiamò non solo di tra i Giudei ma anche di tra i pagani. | 24 even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? |
| 25 È ben detto anche in Osea: Quello che non era mio popolo lo chiamerò: «Mio popolo» e colei che non era amata: «Amata»; | 25 As indeed he says in Hosea, "Those who were not my people I will call 'my people,' and her who was not beloved I will call 'my beloved.'" |
| 26 e avverrà che proprio là dove fu detto loro: «Voi non siete mio popolo», là essi saranno chiamati: «Figli del Dio vivente». | 26 "And in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' they will be called 'sons of the living God.'" |
| 27 Per Israele, invece, Isaia esclama: Se anche il numero dei figli di Israele fosse come l’arena del mare, solo un resto sarà salvo; | 27 And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved; |
| 28 poiché il Signore, senza indugi e tagliando corto, eseguirà la sua parola sulla terra. | 28 for the Lord will execute his sentence upon the earth with rigor and dispatch." |
| 29 Ancora Isaia aveva predetto: Se il Signore degli eserciti non ci avesse lasciato un germe, saremmo diventati come Sodoma e simili a Gomorra. | 29 And as Isaiah predicted, "If the Lord of hosts had not left us children, we would have fared like Sodom and been made like Gomorrah." |
| 30 Che concluderemo dunque? Che i pagani, i quali non si studiavano di raggiungere la giustizia, hanno conseguito la giustizia: la giustizia, s'intende, che proviene dalla fede; | 30 What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, righteousness through faith; |
| 31 mentre Israele, che perseguiva una legge che additava la giustizia, non è pervenuto a praticare la legge. | 31 but that Israel who pursued the righteousness which is based on law did not succeed in fulfilling that law. |
| 32 E perché? Perché non cercava dalla fede, ma dalle opere. Essi urtarono contro la pietra d’inciampo, | 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it through faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, |
| 33 come sta scritto: Ecco, io pongo in Sion una pietra d’inciampo, una pietra di scandalo. Ma chi crede in essa non sarà confuso. | 33 as it is written, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make men stumble, a rock that will make them fall; and he who believes in him will not be put to shame." |
