1 L’anno ventitreesimo di Joash figlio di Okhozia, re di Giuda, Joakhaz, figlio di Jehu, divenne re di Israele a Samaria e regnò diciassette anni.	1 In the twenty-third year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years.
2 Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi di Jahvè e seguì il peccato, che Geroboamo, figlio di Nabat, aveva fatto commettere a Israele e non se ne distaccò.	2 He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin; he did not depart from them.
3 La collera di Jahvè allora divampò contro gli Israeliti e perciò li mise in mano a Khazael, re di Aram, e in mano a Ben- Hadad, figlio di Khazael, per tutto quel tempo.	3 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them continually into the hand of Hazael king of Syria and into the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael.
4 Joakhaz però cominciò a propiziarsi la faccia di Jahvè; questi allora lo ascoltò poiché aveva visto il modo con cui il re di Aram opprimeva gli Israeliti.	4 Then Jehoahaz besought the LORD, and the LORD hearkened to him; for he saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Syria oppressed them.
5 Jahvè concesse a Israele un salvatore ed essi si svincolarono dal dominio di Aram. Così i figli di Israele poterono abitare come per il passato nelle loro tende.	5 (Therefore the LORD gave Israel a savior, so that they escaped from the hand of the Syrians; and the people of Israel dwelt in their homes as formerly.
6 Tuttavia non si allontanarono dal peccato che la casa di Geroboamo aveva fatto commettere a Israele, ma camminarono in esso; anche il palo sacro rimase in piedi a Samaria.	6 Nevertheless they did not depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin, but walked in them; and the Asherah also remained in Samaria.)
7 Pertanto Jahvè non lasciò a Joakhaz altro esercito che cinquanta cavalieri, dieci carri e diecimila fanti; il re di Aram infatti li aveva distrutti riducendoli in polvere da calpestare.	7 For there was not left to Jehoahaz an army of more than fifty horsemen and ten chariots and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Syria had destroyed them and made them like the dust at threshing.
8 Il resto degli atti di Joakhaz, tutto ciò che ha fatto e il suo valore forse non sono cose scritte nel libro degli Annali dei re di Israele?	8 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz and all that he did, and his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
9 Joakhaz si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto a Samaria. Joash suo figlio regnò al suo posto.	9 So Jehoahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria; and Joash his son reigned in his stead.
10 L’anno trentasettesimo di Joash re di Giuda, regnò su Israele a Samaria per sedici anni Joash, figlio di Joakhaz.	10 In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned sixteen years.
11 Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi di Jahvè; non si allontanò dal peccato, che Geroboamo, figlio di Nabat, aveva fatto commettere a Israele, ma camminò in esso.	11 He also did what was evil in the sight of the LORD; he did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin, but he walked in them.
12 Il resto degli atti di Joash, tutto ciò che ha fatto e il suo valore con cui ha lottato contro Amazia, re di Giuda, forse non sono cose scritte nel libro degli Annali dei re di Israele?	12 Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, and the might with which he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
13 Joash si addormentò con i suoi padri e Geroboamo sedette sul suo trono. Joash fu sepolto a Samaria insieme con i re di Israele.	13 So Joash slept with his fathers, and Jeroboam sat upon his throne; and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
14 Ora Eliseo cadde malato di quella malattia, per cui sarebbe morto. Joash, re di Israele, scese da lui e scoppiò in lacrime al suo cospetto gridando: «Padre mio, padre mio! Carro di Israele e suoi cavalli!»	14 Now when Elisha had fallen sick with the illness of which he was to die, Joash king of Israel went down to him, and wept before him, crying, "My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!"
15 Eliseo gli ordinò: «Prendi un arco con frecce». Quegli prese un arco con frecce.	15 And Elisha said to him, "Take a bow and arrows"; so he took a bow and arrows.
16 Poi Eliseo disse al re di Israele: «Poni la mano sull’arco». Egli vi mise la mano, mentre anche Eliseo poneva le mani sulle mani del re.	16 Then he said to the king of Israel, "Draw the bow"; and he drew it. And Elisha laid his hands upon the king's hands.
17 Quindi gli disse: «Apri la finestra a oriente!» Quando l’ebbe aperta, Eliseo soggiunse: «Tira!» Quegli tirò, mentre Eliseo esclamava: «Freccia vittoriosa di Jahvè, freccia vittoriosa contro Aram: tu sconfiggerai Aram come ad Afek, fino allo sterminio!»	17 And he said, "Open the window eastward"; and he opened it. Then Elisha said, "Shoot"; and he shot. And he said, "The LORD's arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Syria! For you shall fight the Syrians in Aphek until you have made an end of them."
18 Poi continuò: «Prendi le frecce». Quegli le prese ed Eliseo disse al re di Israele: «Colpisci per terra». Egli colpì per tre volte e poi si fermò.	18 And he said, "Take the arrows"; and he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, "Strike the ground with them"; and he struck three times, and stopped.
19 L’uomo di Dio allora montò in collera contro di lui dicendo: «Se tu avessi colpito cinque o sei volte, allora avresti sgominato Aram fino allo sterminio; ma ora potrai battere Aram solo tre volte».	19 Then the man of God was angry with him, and said, "You should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck down Syria until you had made an end of it, but now you will strike down Syria only three times."
20 Eliseo morì e fu sepolto. All’inizio del nuovo anno, bande di Moab entrarono nel paese.	20 So Elisha died, and they buried him. Now bands of Moabites used to invade the land in the spring of the year.
21 Ora, mentre la gente stava seppellendo un morto, ecco comparire al loro sguardo una banda. Essi gettarono quell’uomo nel sepolcro di Eliseo e se ne andarono. Ma quegli, al contatto con le ossa di Eliseo, riebbe la vita e si alzò in piedi.	21 And as a man was being buried, lo, a marauding band was seen and the man was cast into the grave of Elisha; and as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood on his feet.
22 Khazael, re di Aram, oppresse Israele durante tutta la vita di Joakhaz.	22 Now Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.
23 Jahvè però fece loro grazia, ne ebbe compassione e si mostrò loro di nuovo benigno a causa della sua alleanza con Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe. Così non volle sterminarli e, fino a oggi, bandirli dal suo cospetto.	23 But the LORD was gracious to them and had compassion on them, and he turned toward them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them; nor has he cast them from his presence until now.
24 Khazael, re di Aram, morì e Ben-Hadad suo figlio regnò al suo posto.	24 When Hazael king of Syria died, Ben-hadad his son became king in his stead.
25 Allora Joash, figlio di Joakhaz, riprese dal potere di Ben-Hadad, figlio di Khazael, le città che costui aveva strappato a Joakhaz suo padre. Joash lo sconfisse per tre volte e riebbe le città di Israele.	25 Then Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again from Ben-hadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken from Jehoahaz his father in war. Three times Joash defeated him and recovered the cities of Israel.
