VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Addens quoque Eliu, hæc locutus est :1 Elihu proceeded further and said:
2 Sustine me paululum, et indicabo tibi :
adhuc enim habeo quod pro Deo loquar.
2 Wait yet a little and I will instruct you, for there are still words to be said on God's behalf.
3 Repetam scientiam meam a principio,
et operatorem meum probabo justum.
3 I will bring my knowledge from afar, and to my Maker I will accord the right.
4 Vere enim absque mendacio sermones mei,
et perfecta scientia probabitur tibi.
4 For indeed, my theme cannot fail me: the one perfect in knowledge I set before you.
5 Deus potentes non abjicit,
cum et ipse sit potens :
5 Behold, God rejects the obstinate in heart; he preserves not the life of the wicked.
6 sed non salvat impios,
et judicium pauperibus tribuit.
6 He withholds not the just man's rights, but grants vindication to the oppressed,
7 Non auferet a justo oculos suos :
et reges in solio collocat in perpetuum,
et illi eriguntur.
7 And with kings upon thrones he sets them, exalted forever.
8 Et si fuerint in catenis,
et vinciantur funibus paupertatis,
8 Or if they are bound with fetters and held fast by bonds of affliction,
9 indicabit eis opera eorum,
et scelera eorum, quia violenti fuerunt.
9 Then he makes known to them what they have done and their sins of boastful pride.
10 Revelabit quoque aurem eorum, ut corripiat :
et loquetur, ut revertantur ab iniquitate.
10 He opens their ears to correction and exhorts them to turn back from evil.
11 Si audierint et observaverint, complebunt dies suos in bono,
et annos suos in gloria :
11 If they obey and serve him, they spend their days in prosperity, their years in happiness.
12 si autem non audierint,
transibunt per gladium,
et consumentur in stultitia.
12 But if they obey not, they perish; they die for lack of knowledge.
13 Simulatores et callidi provocant iram Dei,
neque clamabunt cum vincti fuerint.
13 The impious in heart lay up anger for themselves; they cry not for help when he enchains them;
14 Morietur in tempestate anima eorum,
et vita eorum inter effeminatos.
14 Therefore they expire in youth, and perish among the reprobate.
15 Eripiet de angustia sua pauperem,
et revelabit in tribulatione aurem ejus.
15 But he saves the unfortunate through their affliction, and instructs them through distress.
16 Igitur salvabit te de ore angusto latissime,
et non habente fundamentum subter se :
requies autem mensæ tuæ erit plena pinguedine.
17 Causa tua quasi impii judicata est :
causam judiciumque recipies.
18 Non te ergo superet ira ut aliquem opprimas :
nec multitudo donorum inclinet te.
19 Depone magnitudinem tuam absque tribulatione,
et omnes robustos fortitudine.
20 Ne protrahas noctem,
ut ascendant populi pro eis.
20
21 Cave ne declines ad iniquitatem :
hanc enim cœpisti sequi post miseriam.
21 Take heed, turn not to evil; for you have preferred carousal to affliction.
22 Ecce Deus excelsus in fortitudine sua,
et nullus ei similis in legislatoribus.
22 Behold, God is sublime in his power. What teacher is there like him?
23 Quis poterit scrutari vias ejus ?
aut quis potest ei dicere : Operatus es iniquitatem ?
23 Who prescribes for him his conduct, or who can say, "You have done wrong"?
24 Memento quod ignores opus ejus,
de quo cecinerunt viri.
24 Remember, you should extol his work, which men have praised in song.
25 Omnes homines vident eum :
unusquisque intuetur procul.
25 All men contemplate it; man beholds it from afar.
26 Ecce Deus magnus vincens scientiam nostram :
numerus annorum ejus inæstimabilis.
26 Lo, God is great beyond our knowledge; the number of his years is past searching out.
27 Qui aufert stillas pluviæ,
et effundit imbres ad instar gurgitum,
27 He holds in check the waterdrops that filter in rain through his mists,
28 qui de nubibus fluunt
quæ prætexunt cuncta desuper.
28 Till the skies run with them and the showers rain down on mankind.
29 Si voluerit extendere nubes quasi tentorium suum,
30 et fulgurare lumine suo desuper,
cardines quoque maris operiet.
30 Lo! he spreads the clouds in layers as the carpeting of his tent.
31 Per hæc enim judicat populos,
et dat escas multis mortalibus.
31 For by these he nourishes the nations, and gives them food in abundance.
32 In manibus abscondit lucem,
et præcepit ei ut rursus adveniat.
32 In his hands he holds the lightning, and he commands it to strike the mark.
33 Annuntiat de ea amico suo, quod possessio ejus sit,
et ad eam possit ascendere.
33 His thunder speaks for him and incites the fury of the storm.
