NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Obsecro igitur primo omnium fieri obsecrationes, orationes, postulationes, gratiarum actiones pro omnibus hominibus,1 I urge then, first of al that petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving should be offered foreveryone,
pro regibus et omnibus, qui in sublimitate sunt, ut quietam et tranquillam vitam agamus in omni pietate et castitate.2 for kings and others in authority, so that we may be able to live peaceful and quiet lives with al devotionand propriety.
Hoc bonum est et acceptum coram salvatore nostro Deo,3 To do this is right, and acceptable to God our Saviour:
qui omnes homines vult salvos fieri et ad agnitionem veritatis venire.4 he wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth.
Unus enim Deus, unus et mediator Dei et hominum, homo Christus Iesus,5 For there is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and humanity, himself a humanbeing, Christ Jesus,
qui dedit redemptionem semetipsum pro omnibus, testimonium temporibus suis;6 who offered himself as a ransom for al . This was the witness given at the appointed time,
in quod positus sum ego praedicator et apostolus — veritatem dico, non mentior — doctor gentium in fide et veritate.
of which I was appointed herald and apostle and -- I am telling the truth and no lie -- a teacher of thegentiles in faith and truth.
Volo ergo viros orare in omni loco levantes puras manus sine ira et disceptatione;8 In every place, then, I want the men to lift their hands up reverently in prayer, with no anger or argument.
similiter et mulieres in habitu ornato cum verecundia et sobrietate ornantes se, non in tortis crinibus et auro aut margaritis vel veste pretiosa,9 Similarly, women are to wear suitable clothes and to be dressed quietly and modestly, without braidedhair or gold and jewellery or expensive clothes;
sed, quod decet mulieres, profitentes pietatem per opera bona.
their adornment is to do the good works that are proper for women who claim to be religious.
Mulier in tranquillitate discat cum omni subiectione;11 During instruction, a woman should be quiet and respectful.
docere autem mulieri non permitto neque dominari in virum, sed esse in tranquillitate.12 I give no permission for a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. A woman ought to be quiet,
Adam enim primus formatus est, deinde Eva;13 because Adam was formed first and Eve afterwards,
et Adam non est seductus, mulier autem seducta in praevaricatione fuit.14 and it was not Adam who was led astray but the woman who was led astray and fell into sin.
Salvabitur autem per filiorum generationem, si permanserint in fide et dilectione et sanctificatione cum sobrietate.
Nevertheless, she will be saved by child-bearing, provided she lives a sensible life and is constant infaith and love and holiness.
