1 Perocchè sono pur io un uomo mortale simile a tutti gli altri, e della stirpe di colui, che fu fatto il primo di terra, e nell'utero della madre fui effigiato uomo di carne.	1 I too am mortal like everyone else, a descendant of the first man formed from the earth. I was model edin flesh inside a mother's womb,
2 Nello spazio di dieci mesi fui formato di sangue, e del seme dell'uomo concorrendo il notturno diletto.	2 where, for ten months, in blood I acquired substance -- the result of virile seed and pleasure, sleep'scompanion.
3 Ed io, nato che fui, bevvi l'aere comune, e sopra simile terra io caddi, e la mia prima voce, come di tutti gli altri, fu di vagito.	3 I too, when I was born, drew in the common air, I fel on the same ground that bears us al , and cryingwas the first sound I made, like everyone else.
4 Fui rilevato nelle fascie, e con pene grandi.	4 I was nurtured in swaddling clothes, with every care.
5 Perocché nissuno dei regi ebbe diverso il principio del suo nascimento.	5 No king has known any other beginning of existence;
6 Cosi tutti gli uomini allo stesso modo vengono alla vita, e allo stesso modo sen vanno.	6 for there is only one way into life, and one way out of it.
7 Quindi io desiderai l'intelligenza, e mi fu conceduta, e invocai lo spirito di sapienza, ed ei venne in me:	7 And so I prayed, and understanding was given me; I entreated, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.
8 E questa io preferii ai regni, ed ai troni, e i tesori stimai un nulla a paragone di lei:	8 I esteemed her more than sceptres and thrones; compared with her, I held riches as nothing.
9 Né con essa paragonai le pietre preziose, perché tutto l'oro appetto a lei è come un poco di rena, e l'argento sarà stimato come fango dinanzi a lei.	9 I reckoned no precious stone to be her equal, for compared with her, al gold is a pinch of sand, andbeside her, silver ranks as mud.
10 La amai più che la sanità, e la bellezza, e la anteposi alla luce, perché lo splendore di lei mai non si spegne.	10 I loved her more than health or beauty, preferred her to the light, since her radiance never sleeps.
11 E vennero a me insieme con lei tutti i beni, e infinita ricchezza per man di lei.	11 In her company al good things came to me, and at her hands incalculable wealth.
12 E di tutto questo io mi godei, perché questa sapienza era mia guida, ed io non sapeva, come di tutte queste cose ella è madre.	12 All these delighted me, since Wisdom brings them, though I did not then realise that she was theirmother.
13 Ed io senza finzione la apparai, e la comunico senza invidia, e non tengo ascose le sue ricchezze.	13 What I learned diligently, I shal pass on liberally, I shal not conceal how rich she is.
14 Perocché ella è tesoro infinito per gli uomini, e coloro, che la impiegano, hanno parte all'amicizia di Dio, divenuti commendevoli pei doni della dottrina.	14 For she is to human beings an inexhaustible treasure, and those who acquire this win God'sfriendship, commended to him by the gifts of instruction.
15 E a me concedette Dio di parlare secondo quello, ch'io sento, e di avere concetti degni dei doni a me dati; perocchè egli è il direttore della sapienza, e il correttore de' sapienti:	15 May God grant me to speak as he would wish and conceive thoughts worthy of the gifts I havereceived, since he is both guide to Wisdom and director of sages;
16 Perocché in mano di lui siamo e noi, e le nostre parole, e tutta la sapienza, e la scienza dell'operare, e la disciplina.	16 for we are in his hand, yes, ourselves and our sayings, and al intellectual and al practical knowledge.
17 Egli mi diede la vera scienza delle cose, che sono, affinchè io conosca la disposizione del mondo, e le virtù degli elementi;	17 He it was who gave me sure knowledge of what exists, to understand the structure of the world andthe action of the elements,
18 E il cominciamento e la fine, e il mezzo dei tempi, e le varie vicissitudini, e mutazioni dei tempi,	18 the beginning, end and middle of the times, the alternation of the solstices and the succession of theseasons,
19 Il corso degli anni, e le posizioni delle stelle,	19 the cycles of the year and the position of the stars,
20 Le nature degli animali, e le ire delle fiere, la forza dei venti, e le inclinazioni degli uomini, le differenze degli arboscelli, e le virtù delle radiche.	20 the natures of animals and the instincts of wild beasts, the powers of spirits and human mentalprocesses, the varieties of plants and the medical properties of roots.
21 E imparai tutte le cose nascoste, e che giungono nuove, perché la sapienza fattrice di tutte mi addottrinò.	21 And now I understand everything, hidden or visible, for Wisdom, the designer of all things, hasinstructed me.
22 Perocché in lei risiede lo spirito di intelligenza sauto, unico, molteplice, sottile, eloquente, attivo, incontaminato, infallibile, soave, amante del bene, penetrante, irresistibile, benefico,	22 For within her is a spirit intel igent, holy, unique, manifold, subtle, mobile, incisive, unsul ied, lucid,invulnerable, benevolent, shrewd,
23 Amatore degli uomini, benigno, costante, sicuro, tranquillo, che tutto può, tutto prevede, e tutti contiene gli spiriti, intelligente, puro, sottile.	23 irresistible, beneficent, friendly to human beings, steadfast, dependable, unperturbed, almighty, al -surveying, penetrating al intel igent, pure and most subtle spirits.
24 Or più veloce di qualunque mobile ella è la sapienza, e per tutto arriva, mediante la sua purezza.	24 For Wisdom is quicker to move than any motion; she is so pure, she pervades and permeates allthings.
25 Perocché ella è vapore della virtù; di Dio, e come una pura emanazione della gloria di Dio onnipotente, e perciò nulla in lei cade di immondo:	25 She is a breath of the power of God, pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty; so nothing impurecan find its way into her.
26 Perché ella è splendore di luce eterna, e specchio senza macchia della maestà di Dio, e immagine di sua bontà.	26 For she is a reflection of the eternal light, untarnished mirror of God's active power, and image of hisgoodness.
27 Ed essendo una sola, ella può tutto, e immutabile in se stessa le cose tutte rinnovella, e tralle nazioni ella si spande nelle anime sante, e forma degli amici di Dio, e de' profeti.	27 Although she is alone, she can do everything; herself unchanging, she renews the world, and,generation after generation, passing into holy souls, she makes them into God's friends and prophets;
28 Perocché non altri ama Dio, se non quelli, che convivono colla sapienza.	28 for God loves only those who dwel with Wisdom.
29 Ella è più bella del sole, e ogni ordine di stelle sorpassa, e ove alla luce si paragoni, ella le va innanzi.	29 She is indeed more splendid than the sun, she outshines al the constel ations; compared with light,she takes first place,
30 Imperocché a quella va presso la notte: ma la sapienza non è vinta dalla malizia.	30 for light must yield to night, but against Wisdom evil cannot prevail.
