1 Or Benadad re della Siria raunò tutto il suo esercito, e i cavalli, e i cocchi, e avea seco trentadue re: e si mosse contro Samaria, e la assediò.	1 Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his whole army -- thirty-two kings were with him, and horses andchariots -- and marched on Samaria, to besiege it and take it by assault.
2 E mandò araldi nella città, che dicessero ad Achab re d'Israele:	2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel to tel him, 'Ben-Hadad says this,
3 Queste cose dice Benadad: Il tuo argento, e il tuo oro è mio: e le tue moglie, e i tuoi figliuoli più vistosi son cosa mia.	3 "Your silver and gold are mine. Your wives and children remain yours." '
4 E il re d'Israele rispose: Come dici tu, o re signor mio, io son tuo con tutte le cose mie.	4 The king of Israel replied, 'As you command, my lord king. Myself and al I have are yours.'
5 E gli araldi tornaron di nuovo, e dissero: Queste cose dice Benadad, il quale ci manda a te: Tu mi darai il tuo oro, e il tuo argento, e le tue mogli, ei tuoi figliuoli.	5 The messengers came again, this time they said, 'Ben-Hadad says this, "I have already sent you anorder to hand over your silver and your gold, your wives and your children;
6 Domane adunque a quest'ora stessa manderò a te i miei servi, i quali visiteranno a parte a parte la casa tua, e la casa de' tuoi servi, e tutto quello, che lor piacerà, se lo pigleranno colle loro mani, e lo porteranno via.	6 but I swear, this time tomorrow, I shal send my servants to ransack your house and your servants'houses and lay hands on everything that they value and take it away." '
7 Or il re d'Israele convocò tutti i seniori del paese, e disse: Riflettete, e ponete mente, che egli ci tende insidie: perocché mandò egli a chiedere le mie mogli, e i figliuoli, e l'argento, e l'oro: e io non ho detto di no.	7 The king of Israel summoned al the elders of the country and said, 'You can see clearly how this manintends to ruin us. He has already demanded my wives and my children, although I have not refused him mysilver and gold.'
8 E tutti i seniori, e tutto il popolo dissero a lui: Non ascoltarlo, e non condiscendere a lui.	8 Al the elders and all the people said, 'Take no notice. Do not consent.'
9 Egli adunque rispose ai messi di Benadad: Dite al re mio signore: Tutto quello, che facesti dire a me tuo servo al principio, io lo farò; ma quest'altra cosa non posso farla.	9 So he gave this answer to Ben-Hadad's messengers, 'Say to my lord the king, "Al you first required ofyour servant I wil do, but this I cannot do." ' And the messengers went back with the answer.
10 E i messi portarono a lui questa risposta. Ed ei li rimandò, e disse: Gli dei mi facciano questo, e peggio, se la polvere di Samaria può empiere il pugno di tutta la gente, che mi segue.	10 Ben-Hadad then sent him the following message, 'May the gods bring unnameable ills on me andworse il s too, if there is enough dust in Samaria for each of my fol owers to have a handful!'
11 E il re d'Israele rispose, e disse: Direte a lui: Non si glorii chi delle armi si veste, come chi le depone.	11 But the king of Israel returned this answer, 'Say: the man who puts on his armour is not the one toboast, but the man who takes it off.'
12 Or egli avvenne, che quando udì Benadad queste parole, egli Deveva all'ombra coi re, e disse a' suoi servi: Circondate la citta. Ed ei la circondarono.	12 When Ben-Hadad heard this message -- he was under the awnings drinking with the kings -- he gaveorders to his servants, 'Take up position!' And they took up their positions against the city.
13 quand'ecco un profeta si accostò ad Achab re d'Israele, e gli disse: Queste cose dice il Signore: Hai tu veduta tutta quella turba infinita? or io la darò oggi in tuo potere, affinchè tu conosca, co' io sono il Signore.	13 A prophet then arrived, looking for Ahab king of Israel. 'Yahweh says this,' he said. ' "You have seenthis huge army? This very day I shal deliver it into your hands, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '
14 E Achab disse: Per mezzo di chi? E quegli disse a lui: Queste cose dice il Signore: per mezzo dei servltori che accompagnano a piedi i principi delle provincie. E quegli disse: Chi comincerà la battaglia? E l'altro rispose: Tu.	14 'By whose means?' Ahab asked. The prophet replied, 'Yahweh says this, "By means of the guards ofthe district governors." ' 'Who wil co-ordinate the attack?' Ahab asked. 'You will,' the prophet replied.
15 Egli adunque fece rassegna de' servi dei principi delle provincie, e trovonne il numero di dugento trenta due: e dopo questi fece la rassegna del popolo, e trovò sette mila figliuoli d'Israele.	15 So Ahab inspected the guards of the district governors: there were two hundred and thirty-two. Afterthese he reviewed the army, all the Israelites: there were seven thousand.
16 E usciron fuora sul mezzodì. Or Benadad già ubbriaco beveva nella sua tenda, e con lui i trentadue re venuti in suo ajuto.	16 They made a sortie at midday, when Ben-Hadad was drinking himself senseless under the awnings,he and the thirty-two kings who were al ies.
17 E i servitori de' principi delle Provincie uscirono alla testa di tutti. Or Benadad mandò a vedere. E fugli riferito: E uscita gente fuor di Samaria.	17 The guards of the district governors led the sortie. A report was made to Ben-Hadad: 'Some menhave come out of Samaria.'
18 Ed egli disse: Se son venuti a parlar di pace, prendeteli vivi; se per combattere, prendeteli vivi.	18 He said, 'If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take themalive too.'
19 Si avanzarono adunque i servi tori de' principi delle Provincie, e il rimanente dell'esercito veniva appresso:	19 So they made a sortie from the city, the district governors' guards and behind them the army,
20 E ciascuno di quegli uccise chi se gli fece davanti: e i Siri fuggirono, e Israele gl'inseguì. E anche Benadad re della Siria se ne fuggì a cavallo co' suoi cavalieri.	20 and each struck down his man. Aram took to flight and Israel pursued; Ben-Hadad king of Aramescaped on horseback.
21 E anche il re d'Israele venuto fuori mise in rotta i cavalli, e i cocchi, e diede una grande sconfitta alla Siria.	21 The king of Israel then advanced, capturing horses and chariots and inflicting a great defeat on Aram.
22 Or accostatosi un profeta al re d'Israele, gli disse: Va, e fatti animo, e impara, e pensa a quel, che hai da fare: perocché l'anno venturo il re di Siria si moverà contro di te.	22 The prophet then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Now is the time to be resolute and think careful yabout what you should do, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram wil march against you.'
23 Ma i servi del re di Siria dissero a lui: Gli dei di coloro sono gli dei de' monti: per questo ci hanno vinti: onde è meglio, che combattiamo contro di essi in pianura, e li vinceremo.	23 The servants of the king of Aram said to him, 'Their gods are gods of the mountains; that is why theyhave proved stronger than we are. But if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.
24 Tu adunque fa così: Rimanda dal tuo esercito ciascun di que' regi, e poni in luogo di essi dei capitani.	24 This is what you must do: remove all these kings from their commands and appoint professionalsoldiers in their place.
25 E supplisci il numero de' tuoi soldati, che son morti, e i cavalli com'eran quelli di prima e cocchi come quelli, che avesti pell'avanti: e noi combatteremo con coloro nelle pianure, e vedrai, che li vinceremo. Abbracciò egli il loro consiglio, e fece così.	25 You, for your part, must recruit an army as large as the one which deserted you, with as many horsesand as many chariots; then if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.' He listened to theiradvice and acted accordingly.
26 Quindi passato un anno, Benadad fece la rassegna dei Siri, e andò ad Aphec, per combattere con Israele.	26 At the turn of the year, Ben-Hadad mustered the Aramaeans and marched on Aphek to fight Israel.
27 E fu fatta la rassegna anche de' figliuoli d'Israele, ed eglino proveduti di viveri andarono loro incontro, e posero il campo dirimpetto ad essi (ed erano), come due piccoli greggi di capre: ma i Siri inondavano il paese.	27 The Israelites were already mobilised and provisioned, and marched out to meet them. Encampedopposite them, the Israelites looked like two herds of goats, whereas the Aramaeans fil ed the countryside.
28 E un uomo di Dio fattosi dappresso al re d'Israele, gli disse: Queste cose dice il Signore: Perchè i Siri han detto: Il Signore è Dio dei monti, e non è Dio delle valli, io darò in tuo potere tutta questa moltitudine grande; e conoscerete ch'io sono il Signore.	28 The man of God then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Yahweh says this, "Since Aram has saidthat Yahweh is a god of the mountains and not a god of the plains, I shall put the whole of this huge army intoyour power, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '
29 Ora per sette giorni gli eserciti si posero in ordinanza dall'una parte, e dall'altra, e il settimo giorno fu attaccata la zuffa: e i figliuoli d'Israele uccisero dei Siri in un dì cento mila pedoni.	29 For seven days they were encamped opposite each other. On the seventh day battle was joined andthe Israelites slaughtered the Aramaeans, a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.
30 E quelli, che si eran salvati, fuggirono nella città di Aphec: e la muraglia cadde sopra ventisette mila uomini, che si eran salvati. E Benadad entrò fuggendo nella città, ricoverandosi in una stanza, la più segreta.	30 The rest fled to Aphek, into the citadel, but the city walls collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of thesurvivors. Now Ben-Hadad had fled and taken refuge in an inner room inside the citadel.
31 E i suoi servi gli dissero: Abbiamo già sentito dire, che i re d'Israele son clementi: mettiamoci adunque ai fianchi de' sacchi, e delle funi ai colli nostri, e andiamo incontro al re d'Israele: forse egli ci salverà la vita.	31 'Look,' his servants said to him, 'we have heard that the kings of Israel are faithful and kind kings. Letus put sackcloth round our waists and cords round our heads and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he wilspare your life.'
32 Si cinsero i fianchi coi sacchi, e si posero la corda al collo, e andarono a trovare il re d'Israele, e gli dissero: Benadad tuo servo dice: Salvami: ti prego, la vita. E quegli disse: Se egli è ancor vivo, egli è mio fratello:	32 So they wrapped sackcloth round their waists and put cords round their heads and went to the king ofIsrael, and said, 'Your servant Ben-Hadad says, "Spare my life." '
33 La qual cosa preser quelli per buon augurio: e gli levaron tosto la parola di bocca, e dissero: Benadad tuo fratello. Ed egli disse loro: Andate, e conducetelo a me. Benadad pertanto si presentò a lui, ed ei lo prese sul suo cocchio.	33 'So he is stil alive?' he replied. 'He is my brother.' The men took this for a good omen and quicklyseized on his words. 'Yes,' they said, 'Ben-Hadad is your brother.' Ahab said, 'Go and fetch him.' Then Ben-Hadad came out to him and Ahab made him get up into his chariot.
34 E Benadad gli disse: Le città tolte dal padre mio al padre tuo, io le renderò: e fatti delle piazze in Damasco, come il padre mio ne fece in Samaria, e io, fatta alleanza teco, me n'anderò. Achab fermò l'alleanza, e rimandollo.	34 Ben-Hadad said, 'I shall restore the towns which my father took from your father and you may set upa trading quarter for yourself in Damascus as my father did in Samaria.' 'With a treaty,' Ahab said, 'I shall set youfree.' Granting him a treaty, Ahab let him go.
35 Allora uno de' figliuoli de' profeti disse a un suo compagno a nome del Signore: Feriscimi. Ma quegli non volle ferirlo.	35 At Yahweh's command a member of the brotherhood of prophets said to a companion of his, 'Strikeme,' but the man refused to strike him.
36 E quegli disse a lui: Perchè tu non hai voluto udir la voce del Signore, ecco, che partito da me, sarai ucciso da un lione. E dilungato ch'ei fu alquanto da lui, un lione lo incontrò, e lo uccise.	36 So he said to him, 'Since you have disobeyed Yahweh's order, the very moment you leave me a lionwil kill you.' And no sooner had he left him than he met a lion, which killed him.
37 E avendo di poi trovato un altr'uomo, gli disse: Feriscimi. E quegli lo percosse, e ferillo.	37 The prophet then went to find another man and said, 'Strike me,' and the man struck him andwounded him.
38 Andò adunque il profeta ad incontrare il re sulla strada, e intridendosi colla polvere la faccia, e gli occhi, cangiò il suo aspetto.	38 The prophet then went and stood waiting for the king on the road, disguising himself with a bandageover his eyes.
39 E passato che fu il re, gridò dietro a lui, e disse: Il tuo servo andò a combattere nella mischia: e un uomo essendosi dato alla fuga, un altro lo condusse a me, e disse: Custodisci quest'uomo, il quale se scapolerà, la tua vita pagherà per la sua, ovvero pagherai un talento d'argento.	39 As the king passed, he cal ed out to him, 'Your servant was making his way to where the fight wasthickest when someone left the fighting to bring a man to me, and said, "Guard this man; if he is found missing,your life wil pay for his, or else you wil have to pay one talent of silver."
40 Or mentre io, essendo agitato, mi rivolgea qua, e là, subitamente quegli sparì. E il re d'Israele disse a lui: Tu hai pronunziata tu stesso la tua sentenza.	40 But your servant was busy with one thing and another, the man disappeared.' The king of Israel said,'That is your sentence then. You have pronounced it yourself.'
41 Ma quegli immediatamente nettò la sua faccia dalla polvere, e il re' d'Israele conobbe, eh egli era uno de' profeti.	41 At this the man quickly pul ed off the bandage over his eyes, and the king of Israel recognised him asone of the prophets.
42 Or ei disse al re: Queste cose dice il Signore: Perchè tu ti se' lasciato uscir dalle mani un uomo degno di morte, la tua vita pagherà per la sua, e il tuo popolo pel popol di lui.	42 He said to the king, 'Yahweh says this, "Since you have let the man escape who was under my curseof destruction, your life wil pay for his, your people for his people." '
43 Ma il re d'Israele se ne tornò a casa sua senza volerlo sentire, ed entrò infuriato in Samaria.	43 And the king of Israel went home, gloomy and out of temper, back to Samaria.
