| 1 Samuele disse a Saul: « Il Signore mi mandò a ungerti re sopra il suo popolo d'Israele: or dunque ascolta la voce del Signore. | 1 And Samuel said to Saul, "The LORD sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore hearken to the words of the LORD. |
| 2 Ecco quanto dice il Signore degli eserciti: | 2 Thus says the LORD of hosts, I will punish what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way, when they came up out of Egypt. |
| 3 Ho riflettuto a ciò che Amalec fece a Israele e come gli si opponesse nel viaggio, mentre usciva dall'Egitto. Or dunque va a percuotere Amalec, e distruggi ogni suo avere: non lo risparmiare, non desiderar nessuna delle sue cose; ma uccidi uomini, donne, fanciulli e bambini di latte, buoi e pecore e cammelli e asini ». | 3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.'" |
| 4 Saul, dati gli ordini al popolo, ne fece la rassegna come di tanti agnelli: duecento mila uomini a piedi, e dieci mila uomini di Giuda. | 4 So Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand men on foot, and ten thousand men of Judah. |
| 5 Saul, avanzatosi fino alla città di Amalec, pose un'imboscata nel torrente. | 5 And Saul came to the city of Amalek, and lay in wait in the valley. |
| 6 E disse ai Cinei: « Andate, ritiratevi, uscite di mezzo ad Amalec, che per disgrazia non vi coinvolga con esso: voi invece aveste compassione di tutti i figli d'Israele, quando salivano dall'Egitto ». I Cinei si ritirarono di mezzo ad Amalec. | 6 And Saul said to the Kenites, "Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up out of Egypt." So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. |
| 7 E Saul percosse Amalec da Evila fino a Surm, che sta di faccia all'Egitto: | 7 And Saul defeated the Amalekites, from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt. |
| 8 e prese vivo Agag re di Amalec, e passò a fii di spada tutto il popolo. | 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. |
| 9 Ma Saul e il popolo risparmiarono Agag, e il meglio dei greggi di pecore e di buoi, le vesti, i montoni e tutte le cose belle; invece di distruggere queste, distrussero tutte le cose vili e spregevoli. | 9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them; all that was despised and worthless they utterly destroyed. |
| 10 Allora il Signore rivolse la parola a Samuele e disse: | 10 The word of the LORD came to Samuel: |
| 11 « Mi pento d'aver costituito re Saul, perchè egli mi ha abbandonato e non ha eseguiti i miei ordini ». Samuele ne restò contristato, e gridò al Signore tutta la notte. | 11 "I repent that I have made Saul king; for he has turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments." And Samuel was angry; and he cried to the LORD all night. |
| 12 Samuele si alzò di none per andar la mattina da Saul ma gli fu detto che Saul, andato a Carmelo, ove sì era eretto un arco trionfale, ne era tornato, e, passando oltre, era passato a Galgala. Allora Samuele andava da Saul, e Saul offriva al Signore un olocausto delle primizie della preda fatta sopra Amalec. | 12 And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and it was told Samuel, "Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself and turned, and passed on, and went down to Gilgal." |
| 13 Quando Samuele giunge da Saul. Saul gli disse: « Sii benedetto dal Signore! Ho eseguito gli ordini del Signore ». | 13 And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, "Blessed be you to the LORD; I have performed the commandment of the LORD." |
| 14 Samuele disse: « Che cos'è dunque questo belar di greggi che risuona ai miei orecchi, questo muggir d'armenti che io sento? » | 14 And Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?" |
| 15 Saul rispose: « Sono stati condotti dal paese di Amalee: perchè il popolo ha risparmiato il meglio delle pecore e degli armenti, per immolarli al Signore Dio tuo: le altre cose le abbiamo distrutte ». | 15 Saul said, "They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice to the LORD your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed." |
| 16 Ma Samuele disse a Saul: « Lascia che ti dichiari quanto mi ha detto il Signore in questa notte ». Saul gli disse: « Parla ». | 16 Then Samuel said to Saul, "Stop! I will tell you what the LORD said to me this night." And he said to him, "Say on." |
| 17 Samuele soggiunse: « Non sei forse stato fatto capo delle tribù d'Israele, mentre eri piccolo negli occhi tuoi? Non fu il Signore che ti unse in re sopra Israele? | 17 And Samuel said, "Though you are little in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel. |
| 18 Or il Signore t'aveva mandato sulla via, dicendo: Va ad uccidere i peccatori di Amalec e combattili fino al loro sterminio. | 18 And the LORD sent you on a mission, and said, Go, utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.' |
| 19 Perchè dunque non hai ascoltata la voce del Signore, ma ti sei gettato sulla preda ed hai fatto il male sotto gli occhi del Signore? » | 19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you swoop on the spoil, and do what was evil in the sight of the LORD?" |
| 20 Saul rispose a Samuele: « In quanto a me, io ascoltai la voce del Signore, camminai sulla via per la quale il Signore mi mandò, facendo prigioniero Agag re di Amalec ed uccidendo gli Amaleciti; | 20 And Saul said to Samuel, "I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, I have gone on the mission on which the LORD sent me, I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. |
| 21 ma è stato il popolo che dalla preda ha preso pecore e buoi, primizie di quelli fatti a pezzi, per immolarli al Signore Dio suo in Galgala ». | 21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal." |
| 22 Samuele rispose: « Vuol forse il Signore degli olocausti e delle vittime, o non piuttosto che s'obbedisca alla voce del Signore? L'obbedienza val più dei sacrifizi, il dar retta più dell'offrir grasso di montoni: | 22 And Samuel said, "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. |
| 23 perché la ribellione è come un peccato di magia, il non voler assogettarsi è come un delitto d'idolatria. Or siccome tu hai rigettato la parola dei signore, il Signore ti ha rigettato per non farti più re ». | 23 For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king." |
| 24 Allora Saul disse a Samuele: « Ho peccato, perchè ho trasgredito il comando del Signore e le tue parole, per timore del popolo e per obbedire alla sua voce. | 24 And Saul said to Samuel, "I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. |
| 25 Ma ora te ne prego, sopporta il mio peccato, e ritorna con me, affinchè io adori il signore ». | 25 Now therefore, I pray, pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the LORD." |
| 26 Ma Samuele rispose a Saul: « Non posso tornare con te, perchè hai rigettata la parola del Signore, e il Signore ti ha rigettato da non farti esser più re sopra Israele ». | 26 And Samuel said to Saul, "I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel." |
| 27 Samuele si voltò per andarsene, ma Saul, l'afferrò pel lembo del mantello che si stracciò. | 27 As Samuel turned to go away, Saul laid hold upon the skirt of his robe, and it tore. |
| 28 Allora Samuele gli disse: « Oggi il Signore ha strappato da te il regno d'Israele e l'ha dato ad un tuo vicino migliore di te. | 28 And Samuel said to him, "The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. |
| 29 Or Colui che trionfa in Israele non perdonerà e non si moverà a pentimento, perchè Egli non è un uomo per doversi pentire ». | 29 And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent." |
| 30 Saul disse: « Ho peccato; ma ora onorami davanti agli anziani del mio popolo e davanti a Israele, ritorna con me, affinchè io adori il Signore Dio tuo! » | 30 Then he said, "I have sinned; yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may worship the LORD your God." |
| 31 Samuele allora ritornò, e seguì Saul, il quale adorò il Signore. | 31 So Samuel turned back after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD. |
| 32 Poi Samuele disse: « Conducetemi Agag re di Amalee ». Gli fu presentato Agag grassissimo e tremante. E Agag esclamò: « Così dunque separa l'amara morte? » | 32 Then Samuel said, "Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites." And Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, "Surely the bitterness of death is past." |
| 33 E Samuele a lui: « Come la tua spada privò di figli le madri, così fra le donne resterà senza figli la madre tua ». E Samuele lo tagliò a pezzi davanti al Signore in Galgala. | 33 And Samuel said, "As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women." And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal. |
| 34 Poi Samuele se ne andò a Ramata, e Saul salì a casa sua in Gabaa. | 34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house in Gibe-ah of Saul. |
| 35 Samuele non vide più Saul fino al giorno della sua morte, ma lo piangeva, perchè il Signore si pentiva d'averlo costituito re sopra Israele. | 35 And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel. |
