1 Samuele disse a Saul: « Il Signore mi mandò a ungerti re sopra il suo popolo d'Israele: or dunque ascolta la voce del Signore.	1 Samuel said to Saul, 'I am the man whom Yahweh sent to anoint you as king of his people Israel, sonow listen to the words of Yahweh.
2 Ecco quanto dice il Signore degli eserciti:	2 This is what Yahweh Sabaoth says, "I intend to punish what Amalek did to Israel -- laying a trap forhim on the way as he was coming up from Egypt.
3 Ho riflettuto a ciò che Amalec fece a Israele e come gli si opponesse nel viaggio, mentre usciva dall'Egitto. sQr dunque va a percuotere Amalec. e distruggi ogni suo avere: non lo risparmiare, non desiderar nessuna delle sue cose; ma uccidi uomini, donne, fanciulli e bambini di latte, buoi e pecore e cammelli e asini ».	3 Now, go and crush Amalek; put him under the curse of destruction with al that he possesses. Do notspare him, but kil man and woman, babe and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey." '
4 Saul, dati gli ordini al popolo, ne fece la rassegna come di tanti agnelli: duecento mila uomini a piedi, e dieci mila uomini di Giuda.	4 Saul summoned the people and reviewed them at Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers (andten thousand men of Judah).
5 Saul, avanzatosi fino alla città di Amalec. pose un'imboscata nel torrente.	5 Saul advanced on the town of Amalek and lay in ambush in the river bed.
6 E disse ai Cinei: « Andate, ritiratevi, uscite di mezzo ad Amalec, che per disgrazia non vi coinvolga con esso: voi invece aveste compassione di tutti i figli d'Israele, quando salivano dall'Egitto ». I Cinei si ritirarono di mezzo ad Amalec.	6 Saul said to the Kenites, 'Go away, leave your homes among the Amalekites, in case I destroy youwith them -- you acted with faithful love towards al the Israelites when they were coming up from Egypt.' So theKenites moved away from the Amalekites.
7 E Saul percosse Amalec da Evila fino a Surm, che sta di faccia all'Egitto:	7 Saul then crushed the Amalekites, beginning at Havilah in the direction of Shur, which is to the east ofEgypt.
8 e prese vivo Agag re di Amalec, e passò a fii di spada tutto il popolo.	8 He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive and, executing the curse of destruction, put al the people tothe sword.
9 Ma Saul e il popolo risparmiarono Agag, e il meglio dei greggi di pecore e di buoi, le vesti, i montoni e tutte le cose belle; invece di distruggere queste, distrussero tutte le cose vili e spregevoli.	9 But Saul and the army spared Agag with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fatlings and lambs andal that was good. They did not want to consign these to the curse of destruction; they consigned only what waspoor and worthless.
10 Allora il Signore rivolse la parola a Samuele e disse:	10 The word of Yahweh came to Samuel,
11 « Mi pento d'aver costituito re Saul, perchè egli mi ha abbandonato e non ha eseguiti i miei ordini ». Samuele ne restò contristato, e gridò al Signore tutta la notte.	11 'I regret having made Saul king, since he has broken his allegiance to me and not carried out myorders.' Samuel was appal ed and cried to Yahweh al night long.
12 Samuele si alzò di none per andar la mattina da Saul ma gli fu detto che Saul, andato a Carmelo, ove sì era eretto un arco trionfale, ne era tornato, e, passando oltre, era passato a Galgala. Allora Samuele andava da Saul, e Saul offriva al Signore un olocausto delle primizie della preda fatta sopra Amalec.	12 In the morning, Samuel set off to find Saul. Samuel was told, 'Saul has been to Carmel, to raisehimself a monument there, but now has turned about, moved on and gone down to Gilgal.'
13 Quando Samuele giunge da Saul. Saul gli disse: « Sii benedetto dal Signore! Ho eseguito gli ordini del Signore ».	13 When Samuel reached Saul, Saul said, 'May you be blessed by Yahweh! I have carried outYahweh's orders.'
14 Samuele disse: « Che cos'è dunque questo belar di greggi che risuona ai miei orecchi, questo muggir d'armenti che io sento? »	14 Samuel replied, 'Then what is this bleating of sheep in my ears and the lowing of cattle that I hear?'
15 Saul rispose: « Sono stati condotti dal paese di Amalee: perchè il popolo ha risparmiato il meglio delle pecore e degli armenti, per immolarli al Signore Dio tuo: le altre cose le abbiamo distrutte ».	15 Saul said, 'They have been brought from Amalek, the people having spared the best of the sheepand cattle to sacrifice them to Yahweh, your God; the rest we have consigned to the curse of destruction.'
16 Ma Samuele disse a Saul: « Lascia che ti dichiari quanto mi ha detto il Signore in questa notte ». Saul gli disse: » Parla ».	16 Samuel then said to Saul, 'Stop! Let me tel you what Yahweh said to me last night.' He said, 'Go on.'
17 Samuele soggiunse: « Non sei forse stato fatto capo delle tribù d'Israele, mentre eri piccolo negli occhi tuoi? Non fu il Signore che ti unse in re sopra Israele?	17 Samuel said, 'Smal as you may be in your own eyes, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel?Yahweh has anointed you as king of Israel.
18 Or il Signore t'aveva mandato sulla via, dicendo: Va ad uccidere i peccatori di Amalec e combattili fino al loro sterminio.	18 When Yahweh sent you on a mission he said to you, "Go and put those sinners, the Amalekites,under the curse of destruction and make war on them until they are exterminated."
19 Perchè dunque non hai ascoltata la voce del Signore, ma ti sei gettato sulla preda ed hai fatto il male sotto gli occhi del Signore? »	19 Why then did you not obey Yahweh's voice? Why did you fal on the booty and do what is wrong inYahweh's eyes?'
20 Saul rispose a Samuele: « In quanto a me, io ascoltai la voce del Signore, camminai sulla via per la quale il Signore mi mandò, facendo prigioniero Agag re di Amalec ed uccidendo gli Amaleciti;	20 Saul replied to Samuel, 'But I did obey Yahweh's voice. I went on the mission which Yahweh gaveme; I brought back Agag king of the Amalekites; I put Amalek under the curse of destruction;
21 ma è stato il popolo che dalla preda ha preso pecore e buoi, primizie di quelli fatti a pezzi, per immolarli al Signore Dio suo in Galgala ».	21 and from the booty the people have taken the best sheep and cattle of what was under the curse ofdestruction only to sacrifice them to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.'
22 Samuele rispose: « Vuol forse il Signore degli olocausti e delle vittime, o non piuttosto che s'obbedisca alla voce del Signore? L'obbedienza val più dei sacrifizi, il dar retta più dell'offrir grasso di montoni:	22 To which, Samuel said: Is Yahweh pleased by burnt offerings and sacrifices or by obedience toYahweh's voice? Truly, obedience is better than sacrifice, submissiveness than the fat of rams.
23 perché la ribellione è come un peccato di magia, il non voler assogettarsi è come un delitto d'idolatria. Or siccome tu hai rigettato la parola dei signore, il Signore ti ha rigettato per non farti più re ».	23 Rebellion is a sin of sorcery, presumption a crime of idolatry! 'Since you have rejected Yahweh'sword, he has rejected you as king.'
24 Allora Saul disse a Samuele: « Ho peccato, perchè ho trasgredito il comaudo ilei Signore e le tue parole, per timore del popolo e per obbedire alla sua voce.	24 Saul then said to Samuel, 'I have sinned, having broken Yahweh's order and your instructionsbecause I was afraid of the people and yielded to their demands.
25 Ma ora te ne prego, sopporta il mio peccato, e ritorna con me, affinchè io adori il signore ».	25 Now, please forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh.'
26 Ma Samuele rispose a Saul: « Non posso tornare con te, perchè hai rigettata la parola del Signore, e il Signore ti ha rigettato da non farti esser più re sopra Israele ».	26 Samuel said to Saul, 'I wil not come back with you, since you have rejected Yahweh's word andYahweh has rejected you as king of Israel.'
27 Samuele si voltò per andarsene, ma Saul, l'afferrò pel lembo del mantello che si stracciò.	27 As Samuel turned away to leave, Saul caught at the hem of his cloak and it tore,
28 Allora Samuele gli disse: « Oggi il Signore ha strappato da te il regno d'Israele e l'ha dato ad un tuo vicino migliore di te.	28 and Samuel said to him, 'Today Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you and given it to aneighbour of yours who is better than you.'
29 Or Colui che trionfa in Israele non perdonerà e non si moverà a pentimento, perchè Egli non è un uomo per doversi pentire ».	29 (The Glory of Israel, however, does not lie or go back on his word, not being human and liable to goback on his word.)
30 Saul disse: « Ho peccato; ma ora onorami davanti agli anziani del mio popolo e davanti a Israele, ritorna con me, affinchè io adori il Signore Dio tuo! »	30 'I have sinned,' Saul said, 'but please stil show me respect in front of my people's elders and in frontof Israel, and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh your God.'
31 Samuele allora ritornò, e seguì Saul, il quale adorò ilSignore.	31 Samuel fol owed Saul back and Saul worshipped Yahweh.
32 Poi Samuele disse: « Conducetemi Agag re di Amalee ». Gli fu presentato Agag grassissimo e tremante. E Agag esclamò: « Così dunque separa l'amara morte? »	32 Samuel then said, 'Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites!' Agag came towards him unsteadilysaying, 'Truly death is bitter!'
33 E Samuele a lui: « Come la tua spada privò di figli le madri, così fra le donne resterà senza figli la madre tua ». E Samuele lo tagliò a pezzi davanti al Signore in Galgala.	33 Samuel said: As your sword has left women childless, so wil your mother be left childless amongwomen! Samuel then butchered Agag before Yahweh at Gilgal.
34 Poi Samuele se ne andò a Ramata, e Saul salì a casa sua in Gabaa.	34 Samuel left for Ramah, and Saul went up home to Gibeah of Saul.
35 Samuele non vide più Saul fino al giorno della sua morte, ma lo piangeva, perchè il Signore si pentiva d'averlo costituito re sopra Israele.	35 Samuel did not see Saul again til his dying day. Samuel indeed mourned over Saul, but Yahwehregretted having made Saul king of Israel.
