| 1 Or vogliam farvi conoscere, o fratelli, la grazia che Dio ha concesso ai fedeli delle Chiese di Macedonia: | 1 We want you to know, brethren, about the grace of God which has been shown in the churches of Macedonia, |
| 2 in mezzo alle molte afflizioni che li hanno provati, hanno conservato una gioia abbondante; e la loro profonda povertà ha prodotto l'abbondanza colle ricchezze della loro carità sincera. | 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of liberality on their part. |
| 3 Essi (devo rendere loro questa testimonianza) sono stati spontaneamente generosi, secondo la loro possibilità, ed anche al di sopra della loro possibilità, | 3 For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own free will, |
| 4 scongiurandoci con molte preghiere ad accettare la loro beneficenza e l'incarico di portarla ai santi. | 4 begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints-- |
| 5 E non soltanto han corrisposto alle nostre speranze, ma si son sacrificati essi stessi prima al Signore e poi a noi per la volontà di Dio. | 5 and this, not as we expected, but first they gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God. |
| 6 Talmente che noi abbiamo pregato Tito che, siccome l'ha cominciata, conduca anche a termine tra voi questa opera di beneficenza. | 6 Accordingly we have urged Titus that as he had already made a beginning, he should also complete among you this gracious work. |
| 7 Or come voi abbondate in ogni cosa: in fede, in parola, in scienza, in ogni sollecitudine, e nella carità verso di noi, cercate d'abbordare anche in quest'opera di beneficenza. | 7 Now as you excel in everything--in faith, in utterance, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in your love for us--see that you excel in this gracious work also. |
| 8 Non ve lo dico per darvi un ordine, ma colla premura degli altri, vorrei mettere a prova la sincerità dell'amor vostro. | 8 I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. |
| 9 Perchè voi conoscete bene la generosità del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo, il quale, essendo ricco, si fece povero per voi, affinchè mediante la sua povertà voi diventaste ricchi. | 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. |
| 10 Quello che vi dò ora è un semplice consiglio, e questo è utile a voi che fin dall'anno passato cominciaste non solo a eseguirlo, ma anche a bramarlo. | 10 And in this matter I give my advice: it is best for you now to complete what a year ago you began not only to do but to desire, |
| 11 Or dunque compite l'opera coi fatti, affinchè alla prontezza del volere corrisponda l'esecuzione secondo i vostri averi. | 11 so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. |
| 12 Quando la buona volontà c'è, essa è accetta in ragione di quello che uno ha e non di quello che uno non ha. | 12 For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a man has, not according to what he has not. |
| 13 Non importa però fare in modo che gli altri siano nell'abbondanza e voi nella penuria, ma che ci sia uguaglianza. | 13 I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, |
| 14 Nelle presenti circostanze la vostra abbondanza supplisca alla loro indigenza, affinchè parimente la loro abbondanza supplisca all'indigenza vostra, e così ottengasi l'uguaglianza, secondo quello che è scritto: | 14 but that as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply your want, that there may be equality. |
| 15 Chi ebbe molto non ebbe di più: e chi ebbe poco non ebbe di meno. | 15 As it is written, "He who gathered much had nothing over, and he who gathered little had no lack." |
| 16 Ma grazie sian rese a Dio che ha posta la medesima sollecitudine per voi nel cuore di Tito; | 16 But thanks be to God who puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus. |
| 17 egli infatti non solo ha gradito la nostra preghiera, ma spinto da zelo ancora più ardente, spontaneamente è partito per venire da voi. | 17 For he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest he is going to you of his own accord. |
| 18 Abbiamo inviato con lui anche il fratello elogiato in tutte le Chiese per l'Evangelo, | 18 With him we are sending the brother who is famous among all the churches for his preaching of the gospel; |
| 19 il quale, di più, è eletto dalle Chiese anche ad esser compagno del nostro pellegrinaggio in questa opera di carità, che noi compiamo a gloria del Signore e per mostrare la nostra buona volontà. | 19 and not only that, but he has been appointed by the churches to travel with us in this gracious work which we are carrying on, for the glory of the Lord and to show our good will. |
| 20 E questo per evitare che alcuno ci possa biasimare relativamente a questa abbondante colletta di cui siamo incaricati; | 20 We intend that no one should blame us about this liberal gift which we are administering, |
| 21 perchè noi ci preoccupiamo di fare il bene non soltanto davanti a Dio, ma anche davanti agli uomini. | 21 for we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of men. |
| 22 Con loro poi, abbiamo mandato anche un nostro fratello, del quale sovente e in molte cose abbiamo sperimentato lo zelo, e che ora è anche più zelante per la grande fiducia che ha in voi. | 22 And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often tested and found earnest in many matters, but who is now more earnest than ever because of his great confidence in you. |
| 23 Or in quanto a Tito, egli è il mio compagno, il mio coadiutore in mezzo a voi; in quanto ai nostri fratelli, essi sono gli apostoli delle Chiese e la gloria di Cristo. | 23 As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker in your service; and as for our brethren, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ. |
| 24 Date dunque loro nel cospetto delle Chiese la prova del vostro amore, del giusto vanto che meniamo di voi. | 24 So give proof, before the churches, of your love and of our boasting about you to these men. |
