| 1 Or il popolo si levò a mormorare contro il Signore, quasi lamentandosi delle fatiche. Il Signore appena li sentì si mosse a sdegno: il fuoco del Signore divampò contro di essi e divorò l'estremità del campo. | 1 And the people complained in the hearing of the LORD about their misfortunes; and when the LORD heard it, his anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burned among them, and consumed some outlying parts of the camp. |
| 2 Avendo il popolo gridato a Mosè, Mosè pregò il Signore, e il fuoco si estinse. | 2 Then the people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire abated. |
| 3 Mosè chiamò quel luogo « Incendio», perchè il fuoco, del Signore aveva divampato contro di loro. | 3 So the name of that place was called Taberah, because the fire of the LORD burned among them. |
| 4 Or la plebaglia che era venuta con essi arse d'ingorda, brama, e seduta a piangere, unitisi a lei anche i figli d'Israele, diceva: « Chi ci darà da mangiare delle carni? | 4 Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving; and the people of Israel also wept again, and said, "O that we had meat to eat! |
| 5 Ci ricordiamo dei pesci che in Egitto mangiavamo per nulla, dei cocomeri, dei poponi, dei porri, delle cipolle e degli agli. | 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt for nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; |
| 6 La nostra anima è arida; i nostri occhi non vedon altro che manna ». | 6 but now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at." |
| 7 La manna era simile al seme di coriandolo, e aveva il colore del bdellio; | 7 Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of bdellium. |
| 8 il popolo andava intorno a raccoglierla e poi la riduceva in farina colla macina o la pestava nel mortaio, la coceva nella pentola e ne faceva delle stiacciate gustose come il pane cotto coll'olio. | 8 The people went about and gathered it, and ground it in mills or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it; and the taste of it was like the taste of cakes baked with oil. |
| 9 E quando la notte sul campo cadeva la rugiada, cadeva anche la manna. | 9 When the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell with it. |
| 10 E Mosè sentì che il popolo piangeva in tutte le famiglie, ciascuno alla porta della sua tenda. L'ira del Signore si accese grandemente, ed anche a Mosè la cosa parve intollerabile, | 10 Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent; and the anger of the LORD blazed hotly, and Moses was displeased. |
| 11 è disse al Signore: « Perchè hai afflitto il tuo servo? Perchè non trovo grazia dinanzi a te? Perchè mi hai posto addosso il peso di tutto questo popolo? | 11 Moses said to the LORD, "Why hast thou dealt ill with thy servant? And why have I not found favor in thy sight, that thou dost lay the burden of all this people upon me? |
| 12 L'ho forse concepito io tutto questo popolo, l'ho forse generato io, perchè tu abbia a dirmi: Portali nel tuo seno come la nutrice suol portare il bambino, e portali nella terra che ho promosso con giuramento ai loro padri? | 12 Did I conceive all this people? Did I bring them forth, that thou shouldst say to me, 'Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries the sucking child, to the land which thou didst swear to give their fathers?' |
| 13 Dove ho le carni da dare a sì gran turba? Essi piangono dietro a me e dicono: Dacci a mangiare della carne. | 13 Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep before me and say, 'Give us meat, that we may eat.' |
| 14 Io da solo non posso sostenere tutto questo popolo: è troppo grave per me. | 14 I am not able to carry all this people alone, the burden is too heavy for me. |
| 15 Se ti pare altrimenti, ti prego che tu mi faccia morire, se ho trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, affinchè non sia oppresso da tanti mali ». | 15 If thou wilt deal thus with me, kill me at once, if I find favor in thy sight, that I may not see my wretchedness." |
| 16 E il Signore disse a Mosè: « Radunami settanta uomini tra gli anziani d'Israele, da te conosciuti come anziani del popolo e maestri, conducili alla porta del Tabernacolo dell'alleanza, ove staranno teco, | 16 And the LORD said to Moses, "Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. |
| 17 finchè io non discenda a parlarti, a prendere del tuo spirito per darlo a loro, perché sostengan teco il peso del popolo e, non sia aggravato tu soltanto. | 17 And I will come down and talk with you there; and I will take some of the spirit which is upon you and put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone. |
| 18 E dirai al popolo: Santificatevi, e domani mungerete delle carni: siccome io vi ho sentito dire: Chi ci darà a mangiare della carne? Si stava pur bene in Egitto, ecco il Signore vi darà della carne e voi mangerete, non per un giorno, | 18 And say to the people, 'Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wept in the hearing of the LORD, saying, "Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt." Therefore the LORD will give you meat, and you shall eat. |
| 19 non per due o cinque o dieci, nè per venti giorni, | 19 You shall not eat one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days, |
| 20 ma per un mese intero, fino a tanto che non vi esca per le narici e vi faccia nausea; perchè avete rigettato il Signore che è in mezzo a voi, e avete pianto nel cospetto di lui dicendo: Perchè siamo usciti dall'Egitto? » | 20 but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have rejected the LORD who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, 'Why did we come forth out of Egypt?'" |
| 21 E Mosè disse: « Vi sono seicento mila uomini a piedi in questo popolo, e, tu dici: Darò loro a mangiare, della carne per un mese intero. | 21 But Moses said, "The people among whom I am number six hundred thousand on foot; and thou hast said, 'I will give them meat, that they may eat a whole month!' |
| 22 Sì dovrà torse uccidere gran moltitudine di pecore e di buoi da bastare a sfamarli? O dovran radunarsi tutti i pesci del mare per satollarli? » | 22 Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to suffice them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?" |
| 23 Il Signore gli rispose: « E' forse impotente la mano del Signore? Or vedrai se compio coll'opera, la mia parola ». | 23 And the LORD said to Moses, "Is the LORD's hand shortened? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not." |
| 24 Or Mosè andò a riferire al popolo le parole del Signore, e radunati settanta uomini degli anziani d'Israele, li fece stare intorno al Tabernacolo. | 24 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and placed them round about the tent. |
| 25 E il Signore scese, nella nuvola e gli parlò, e, preso dello Spirito che era in Mosè, lo diede ai settanta. Or come si fu posato su di essi lo Spirito, profetarono e non cessaron più. | 25 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was upon him and put it upon the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did so no more. |
| 26 Intanto, essendo rimasti negli accampamenti due uomini, chiamati uno Eldad e l'altro Medad, lo Spirito si pose sopra di loro, che eran tra gl'iscritti, ma non eran usciti per andare al Tabernacolo. | 26 Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested upon them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. |
| 27 Or mentre essi profetavano nel campo, un giovane corse a darne la nuova a Mosè, dicendo: « Eldad e Medad profetano negli accampamenti ». | 27 And a young man ran and told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." |
| 28 Subito Giosuè, figlio di Nuli, ministro di Mosè ed eletto fra molti, disse: « Mosè, signor mio, non glielo permettere! » | 28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the minister of Moses, one of his chosen men, said, "My lord Moses, forbid them." |
| 29 Mosè invece disse: « Sei tu geloso per me? Oh, profetasse tutto il popolo e il Signore desse loro il suo Spirito! | 29 But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!" |
| 30 Mosè e i seniori d'Israele tornarono agli accampamenti. | 30 And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp. |
| 31 E un vento mandato dal Signore, prese delle quaglie al di là del mare, le portò e le fece cadere sugli accampamenti e intorno al campo da ogni parte, per lo spazio d'una giornata di cammino; esse svolazzavano per l'aria all'altezza di due cubiti sopra la terra. | 31 And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and it brought quails from the sea, and let them fall beside the camp, about a day's journey on this side and a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and about two cubits above the face of the earth. |
| 32 E il popolo raccolse quaglie tutto quel giorno, la notte e il giorno dopo: chi ne raccolse meno ne ebbe dieci cori e le fecero seccare intorno agli accampamenti. | 32 And the people rose all that day, and all night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails; he who gathered least gathered ten homers; and they spread them out for themselves all around the camp. |
| 33 Ne avevano ancora la carne fra i denti, e non l'avevano ancora finita, quand'ecco l'ira del Signore accendersi contro del popolo e percuoterlo con una piaga grandissima. | 33 While the meat was yet between their teeth, before it was consumed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague. |
| 34 Quel luogo fu chiamato « Sepolcri della concupiscenza », perchè li fu seppellita la gente dalle ingorde brame. Partiti poi dai « Sepolcri della concupiscenza », giunsero ad Haserot, ed ivi si fermarono. | 34 Therefore the name of that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had the craving. |
| 35 From Kibroth-hattaavah the people journeyed to Hazeroth; and they remained at Hazeroth. |
