1 Ma sopra gli empi sino alla fine pesò senza pietà l'ira (di Dio), perchè di loro prevedeva anche il futuro,	1 But the wicked, merciless wrath assailed until the end. For he knew beforehand what they were yet to do:
2 che cioè, dopo aver loro permesso d'andarsene ed averli spediti con grande premura, cam­biato proposito, li avrebbero in­ seguiti.	2 That though they themselves had agreed to the departure and had anxiously sent them on their way, they would regret it and pursue them.
3 Erano infatti ancora in­volti nel lutto e spargevano la­ crime sulle tombe dei morti, quando si appigliarono ad altro stolto consiglio, e perseguitava­no come fuggiaschi quelli che pri­ma avevano scongiurato ad an­darsene.	3 For while they were still engaged in funeral rites and were mourning at the burials of the dead, They adopted another senseless plan; and those whom they had sent away with entreaty, they pursued as fugitives.
4 A tal fine li trascinava ben meritata fatalità: perdevan la memoria di ciò che era accadu­to, affinchè nuovo castigo com­pletasse ciò che mancava ai loro tormenti,	4 For a compulsion suited to this ending drew them on, and made them forgetful of what had befallen them, That they might fill out the torments of their punishment,
5 e il tuo popolo avesse il miracoloso passaggio, quelli invece trovassero un nuovo ge­nere di morte;	5 and your people might experience a glorious journey while those others met an extraordinary death.
6 che ogni creatu­ra, nel suo genere, prendeva nuo­ve forme, compiendo i tuoi pre­cetti, per conservar illesi i tuoi figli.	6 For all creation, in its several kinds, was being made over anew, serving its natural laws, that your children might be preserved unharmed.
7 Così la nuvola ombreggia­va i loro accampamenti, e dove prima era l'acqua comparve la terra asciutta, e nel Mar Rosso una via senza ostacoli, e nel pro­fondo dell'abisso una verdeggian­te campagna,	7 The cloud overshadowed their camp; and out of what had before been water, dry land was seen emerging: Out of the Red Sea an unimpeded road, and a grassy plain out of the mighty flood.
8 per cui passò tutta la nazione, protetta dalla tua mano, spettatrice delle tue ma­raviglie, dei tuoi prodigi.	8 Over this crossed the whole nation sheltered by your hand, after they beheld stupendous wonders.
9 Come cavalli furon ben pasciuti, come agnelli saltellarono, magnifican­do te, o Signore, che li avevi sal­vati.	9 For they ranged about like horses, and bounded about like lambs, praising you, O LORD! their deliverer.
10 Si ricordavano ancora di ciò che era accaduto durante il loro soggiorno in paese straniero, come in cambio di parti di bestia­ me la terra produsse delle mo­sche, e in luogo dei pesci il fiume gettò fuori branchi di ranocchi,	10 For they were still mindful of what had happened in their sojourn: how instead of the young of animals the land brought forth gnats, and instead of fishes the river swarmed with countless frogs.
11 Finalmente videro una nuova razza d'uccelli, quando, spinti dall'ingordigia, chiesero cibi squisiti.	11 And later they saw also a new kind of bird when, prompted by desire, they asked for pleasant foods;
12 Ad appagare il loro desiderio saliron dal mare le quaglie. Inve­ce sopra i peccatori piombarono i castighi, non senza indizi, dati avanti a furia di fulmini. Essi in­fatti eran giustamente puniti se­condo la loro malvagità,	12 For to appease them quail came to them from the sea.
13 perchè furon dei piò detestabili inospi­ tali: gli uni non ricevendo ospiti sconosciuti; gli altri riducendo in schiavitù ospiti loro bene­ fattori.	13 And the punishments came upon the sinners only after forewarnings from the violence of the thunderbolts. For they justly suffered for their own misdeeds, since indeed they treated their guests with the more grievous hatred.
14 E non solo questo, ma c'è da considerare un'al­tra cosa riguardo ai primi: che essi ricevettero di mala voglia i forestieri;	14 For those others did not receive unfamiliar visitors, but these were enslaving beneficent guests.
15 questi invece, dopo averli ricevuti con gioia, quando già vivevan con loro sotto le me­desime leggi, li straziarono coi più atroci tormenti.	15 And not that only; but what punishment was to be theirs since they received strangers unwillingly!
16 E furono puniti coll'accecamento come quelli alla porta del giusto, quan­do, avvolti in subitanee tenebre, ciascuno andava cercando l'in­gresso della sua casa.	16 Yet these, after welcoming them with festivities, oppressed with awful toils those who now shared with them the same rights.
17 Pertanto gli elementi cam­biavano tra loro, come nel sal­terio. di cui variano gli accordi, benché ogni corda conservi il pro­prio suono come ci si può persuadere dalla semplice vista.	17 And they were struck with blindness, as those others had been at the portals of the just- When, surrounded by yawning darkness, each sought the entrance of his own gate.
18 Infatti gli animali terrestri si cam­biavano in acquatici, e quelli fat­ti per notare passavano sulla ter­ra;	18 For the elements, in variable harmony among themselves, like strings of the harp, produce new melody, while the flow of music steadily persists. And this can be perceived exactly from a review of what took place.
19 il fuoco nell'acqua sorpassa­va la sua propria forza, e l'acqua si dimenticava della sua virtù naturale di spegnere.	19 For land creatures were changed into water creatures, and those that swam went over on to the land.
20 Al con­trario, le fiamme non attaccava­no le carni di fragili animali che vi camminavan dentro, nè disfacevan quell'ottimo cibo, che si sarebbe dovuto fondere come il ghiaccio. In tutti i modi tu hai reso grande e glorioso il tuo popolo, o Signore, non lo hai di­sprezzato, e l'hai assistito in ogni tempo e in ogni luogo.	20 Fire in water maintained its own strength, and water forgot its quenching nature;
	21 Flames, by contrast, neither consumed the flesh of the perishable animals that went about in them, nor melted the icelike, quick-melting kind of ambrosial food.
	22 For every way, O LORD! you magnified and glorified your people; unfailing, you stood by them in every time and circumstance.
