1 Ma tu, o nostro Dio, sei beni­gno e verace, paziente, e con mi­sericordia tutto governi.	1 But you, our God, are good and true, slow to anger, and governing all with mercy.
2 Anche se pecchiamo siamo tuoi, ricono­scendo la tua grandezza, e se non pecchiamo siamo sicuri d'essere annoverati fra i tuoi.	2 For even if we sin, we are yours, and know your might; but we will not sin, knowing that we belong to you.
3 E certo la giustizia perfetta consiste nel co­noscerti, e comprendere la giu­stizia e la tua potenza è radice dell'immortalità.	3 For to know you well is complete justice, and to know your might is the root of immortality.
4 Così non ci tra­viarono nell'errore le male arti dell'umana invenzione, nè il vano artifizio di ombreggiata pittura, nè effigie scolpita di diversi co­lori.	4 For neither did the evil creation of men's fancy deceive us, nor the fruitless labor of painters, A form smeared with varied colors,
5 La vista di ciò eccita la pas­sione dello sciocco, invaghito del1 'esanime figura d 'una, in orta immagine.	5 the sight of which arouses yearning in the senseless man, till he longs for the inanimate form of a dead image.
6 Affezionati al male, son degni di sperare in tali cose, e chi le fa e chi le ama e chi le onora.	6 Lovers of evil things, and worthy of such hopes are they who make them and long for them and worship them.
7 Un vasaio, maneggiando la molle creta, con molta fatica, ne forma or questo or quel vaso a nostro servizio, collo stesso fan­go fa vasi destinati a nobili usi, ed anche quelli destinati a tutt'altro; e dell'uso a cui debbon servire quei vasi ne è giudice il vasaio.	7 For truly the potter, laboriously working the soft earth, molds for our service each several article: Both the vessels that serve for clean purposes and their opposites, all alike; As to what shall be the use of each vessel of either class the worker in clay is the judge.
8 E poi, con vana fatica, fa, del medesimo fango, un dio, lui che, da poco fatto di terra, tra poco ritorna a quello da cui fu tratto, quando gli sarà diman­data l'anima, che ha come in pre­stito.	8 And with misspent toil he molds a meaningless god from the selfsame clay; though he himself shortly before was made from the earth And after a little, is to go whence he was taken, when the life that was lent him is demanded back.
9 Ma egli non si dà pena del­la sua fatica, nè della brevità della sua vita, ma tenta di far concorrenza agli orefici e agli ar­gentieri, imita i bronzisti, e pone la sua gloria nel formare cose inuti­li.	9 But his concern is not that he is to die nor that his span of life is brief; Rather, he vies with goldsmiths and silversmiths and emulates molders of bronze, and takes pride in modeling counterfeits.
10 Cenere è il suo cuor, la sua spe­ranza è più vana della terra, la sua vita è più vile del fango;	10 Ashes his heart is! more worthless than earth is his hope, and more ignoble than clay his life;
11 perchè non riconosce colui che l'ha fatto, che gli ha ispirata l'anima, che agisce, e soffiò in lui lo spirito del­la vita.	11 Because he knew not the one who fashioned him, and breathed into him a quickening soul, and infused a vital spirit.
12 Essi han creduto che la nostra vita sia un gioco, e che tutta l'occupazione della vita ab­bia per scopo il guadagno, e che si debba guadagnare con tutti i mezzi, anche col delitto.	12 Instead, he esteemed our life a plaything, and our span of life a holiday for gain; "For one must," says he, "make profit every way, be it even out of evil."
13 Ben sa di peccare sopra ogni altro chi dalla (medesima) mota fa fragili vasi e idoli scolpiti.	13 For this man more than any knows that he is sinning, when out of earthen stuff he creates fragile vessels and idols alike.
14 Son tutti insensati e disgraziati e oltremo­do superbi di spirito i nemici del tuo popolo e chi li governa;	14 But all quite senseless, and worse than childish in mind, are the enemies of your people who enslaved them.
15 perchè hanno stimati come dèi tutti di idoli delle genti, i quali non han l'uso degli occhi per vedere, nè delle narici per respirare, nè degli orecchi per udire, nè dei diti delle mani per toccare, ed anche i loro piedi sono incapaci di muoversi.	15 For they esteemed all the idols of the nations gods, which have no use of the eyes for vision, nor nostrils to snuff the air, Nor ears to hear, nor fingers on their hands for feeling; even their feet are useless to walk with.
16 Un uomo li ha fatti, li ha formati uno che ha lo spirito in prestito. Nessun uomo potrà mai fare un dio simile a se stesso.	16 For a man made them; one whose spirit has been lent him fashioned them. For no man succeeds in fashioning a god like himself;
17 Egli, essendo mortale, con empie mani forma una cosa morta. Ma egli è da più di quelli che adora, perchè egli almeno ha la vita, sebbene mortale, ma quelli non l'hanno mai avuta.	17 being mortal, he makes a dead thing with his lawless hands. For he is better than the things he worships; he at least lives, but never they.
18 Inoltre essi adorano gli animali più ributtanti, che, paragonati agli altri privi di ragione, sono i peggiori.	18 And besides, they worship the most loathsome beasts-- for compared as to folly, these are worse than the rest,
19 Ed anche nell'aspetto nessuno in questi animali può vedere qualche cosa di bello, per­chè furono esclusi dall'approva­zione e dalla benedizioni di Dio.	19 Nor for their looks are they good or desirable beasts, but they have escaped both the approval of God and his blessing.
