1 L'anno centocinquantuno, Demetrio figlio di Seleuco, partì da Roma, e, giunto con poca gente ad una città marittima, vi cominciò a regnare.	1 In the year 151, Demetrius son of Seleucus left Rome and arrived with a few men at a town on thecoast, where he inaugurated his reign.
2 Appena egli fu entrato nel regno dei suoi padri, l'esercito mise le mani addosso ad Antioco e a Lisia, per menarli a lui.	2 It so happened that, as he was entering the royal residence of his ancestors, the army capturedAntiochus and Lysias, and intended to bring them to him.
3 Appena ne fu avvertito, disse: « Non me li fate nemmen vedere ».	3 On hearing this, he said, 'Keep them out of my sight.'
4 I soldati li uccisero; e Demetrio si assise sul trono del suo regno.	4 The army put them to death, and Demetrius ascended his throne.
5 Allora alcuni uomini malvagi ed empi d'Israele, con a capo Alcimo, che voleva essere sommo sacerdote, andarono a lui,	5 Next, al those Israelites without law or piety, led by Alcimus, whose ambition was to become highpriest,
6 e accusarono la loro nazione presso il re, dicendo: « Giuda e i suoi fratelli hanno fatto perire tutti i tuoi amici, e ci hanno cacciati dal nostro paese.	6 approached the king and denounced our people to him. 'Judas and his brothers', they said, 'have kil edal your friends, and he has driven us out of our country.
7 Or tu manda una persona di tua fiducia a riconoscere le rovine che esso ha fatte a noi e alle provincie del re, e a punire tutti gli amici di lui ed i loro fautori ».	7 Send someone now whom you can trust; let him go and see the wholesale ruin Judas has brought onus and on the king's dominions, and let him punish the wretches and al who assist them.'
8 Il re scelse, tra i suoi amici, Bacchide, il quale comandava nel regno di là dal gran fiume, ed era fedele al re.	8 The king chose Bacchides, one of the Friends of the King, governor of Transeuphrates, an importantpersonage in the kingdom and loyal to the king.
9 Lo spedì a vedere lo sterminio fatto da Giuda. Di più diede il pontificato all'empio Alcimo, ordinandogli di far le vendette contro i figli d'Israele.	9 He sent him with the godless Alcimus, whom he confirmed in the high priesthood, with orders to exactretribution from the Israelites.
10 E si mossero, ed entrarono con grande esercito nella terra di Giuda, e mandarono ambasciatori a dire a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli parole di pace, per ingannarli;	10 So they set out with a large force and, on reaching Judaea, sent emissaries to Judas and his brotherswith proposals peaceable yet treacherous.
11 ma essi, vedendo che eran venuti con grande esercito, non diedero importanza alle loro parole.	11 The latter, however, did not put any faith in their words, aware that they had come with a large force.
12 Invece una schiera di scribi si presentarono ad Alcimo e a Bacchide per domandar loro il giusto;	12 Nevertheless, a commission of scribes presented themselves before Alcimus and Bacchides, to suefor just terms.
13 ed anche quelli che erano i primi tra i figli d'Israele, gli Assidei, chiedevano loro la pace;	13 The first among the Israelites to ask them for peace terms were the Hasidaeans,
14 perchè dicevano: « Viene uno che è sacerdote della stirpe d'Aronne, egli non c'ingannerà ».	14 who reasoned thus, 'This is a priest of Aaron's line who has come with the armed forces; he wil notwrong us.'
15 Ed egli rivolse loro parole di pace, e con giuramento disse loro: « Non faremo alcun male, nè a voi nè ai vostri amici ».	15 He did in fact discuss peace terms with them and gave them his oath, 'We shal not attempt to injureyou or your friends.'
16 E gli credettero; ma egli, fatti prendere sessanta uomini dei loro, li fece uccidere in un sol giorno, secondo la parola che sta scritta:	16 They believed him, but he arrested sixty of them and put them to death on one day, fulfil ing the wordsof scripture:
17 « Gettarono intorno a Gerusalemme le carni dei tuoi santi, e il loro sangue, e non c'era chi desse loro sepoltura ».	17 They have scattered the bodies of your faithful, and shed their blood all round Jerusalem, leaving noone to bury them!
18 Allora tutto il popolo fu preso da timore e da tremito, e disse: « Non c'è nè verità nè giustizia tra loro, perchè han violati i patti e il giuramento che ha fatto ».	18 At this, fear and dread gripped the whole people. 'There is no truth or virtue in them,' they said, 'theyhave broken their agreement and their sworn oath.'
19 Allora Bacchide levò il campo da Gerusalemme e andò a porlo a Betzeca, e mandò a imprigionare molti che s'erano ritirati da lui, e alcuni del popolo li fece uccidere e gettare in un gran pozzo.	19 Bacchides then left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Zeth, and from there sent and arrested many ofthe men who had deserted him and a few of our people too; he had them kil ed and thrown down the great wel .
20 E dopo avere affidato il paese ad Alcimo, lasciando a lui truppe d'aiuto, Bacchide se ne tornò dal re.	20 He then put Alcimus in charge of the province, leaving an army with him to support him; Bacchideshimself returned to the king.
21 Or Alcimo faceva di tutto per stabilire il principato del suo sacerdozio; si radunarono intorno a lui tutti i perturbatori del loro popolo, e si resero padroni	21 Alcimus continued his struggle to become high priest,
22 della terra di Giuda, e fecero grandi mali ad Israele.	22 and al who were disturbing the peace of their own people ral ied to him, and, having won control ofJudaea, did much harm in Israel.
23 Ma Giuda, vedendo i mali fatti contro i figli d'Israele da Alcimo e da quelli che eran con lui, mali peggiori di quelli fatti dalle nazioni,	23 Seeing that al the wrongs done to the Israelites by Alcimus and his supporters exceeded what thegentiles had done,
24 andò in giro per tutto il territorio della Giudea, a prender le vendette contro i disertori, i quali finirono di scorrazzare per la regione.	24 Judas went right round the whole territory of Judaea to take vengeance on those who had desertedhim and to prevent their free movement about the country.
25 Allora Alcimo, vedendo che Giuda e i suoi partigiani eran superiori di forze, e conoscendo di non poter fare ad essi resistenza, se ne tornò dal re, e li accusò di molti delitti.	25 When Alcimus saw how strong Judas and his supporters had grown and realised that he waspowerless to resist them, he went back to the king, to whom he made malicious accusations against them.
26 Il re mandò Nicanore, uno dei suoi più grandi generali, nemico dichiarato d'Israele, e gli ordinò di sterminare quel popolo.	26 The king sent Nicanor, one of his generals ranking as Il ustrious and a bitter enemy of Israel, withorders to exterminate the people.
27 Giunto a Gerusalemme con grande esercito, Nicànore mandò gente a parlare di pace con Giuda e coi suoi fratelli per ingannarli,	27 Reaching Jerusalem with a large force, Nicanor sent a friendly, yet treacherous, message to Judasand his brothers, as follows:
28 col dire: « Non ci sia guerra tra me e voi: io verrò con poca gente a vedervi amichevolmente ».	28 'Let us have no fighting between you and me; I shall come with a smal escort for a peaceful meetingwith you.'
29 Così andò a trovar Giuda e si salutarono cortesemente l'un l'altro; ma i nemici stavano pronti per impadronirsi di Giuda,	29 He met Judas and they exchanged friendly greetings; the enemy, however, had made preparations toabduct Judas.
30 il quale, saputo che egli era venuto con cattive intenzioni, n'ebbe paura, e non volle più vederlo.	30 When Judas became aware of Nicanor's treacherous purpose in coming to see him, he took fright andrefused any further meeting.
31 Allora Nicànore, accortosi che le sue trame erano scoperte, andò ad attaccare Giuda presso Cafarsalama.	31 Nicanor then realised that his plan had been discovered, and took the field against Judas, to givebattle near Caphar-Salama.
32 Dell'esercito di Nicànore restarono uccisi circa cinque mila uomini, e il resto se ne fuggi nella città di David.	32 About five hundred of Nicanor's men fell; the rest took refuge in the City of David.
33 Dopo questi fatti, Nicànore salì al monte di Sion, e alcuni sacerdoti gli uscirono incontro a salutarlo amichevolmente, e a fargli vedere gli olocausti che erano offerti pel re.	33 After these events Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests came out of the Holy Placewith some elders, to give him a friendly welcome and show him the burnt offering being presented for the king.
34 Ma egli li derise, li trattò con disprezzo, li contaminò, parlò superbamente,	34 But he ridiculed them, laughed at them, defiled them and used insolent language, swearing in hisrage,
35 e, giurando, pieno di collera, disse: « Se non mi sarà dato nelle mani Giuda e il suo esercito, appena tornerò vittorioso, darò alle fiamme questa casa ». E se ne andò fieramente sdegnato.	35 'Unless Judas is handed over to me this time with his army, as soon as I am safely back, I promiseyou, I shal burn this building down!'
36 Allora i sacerdoti, rientrati, stettero dinanzi all'altare e al tempio, e dissero piangendo:	36 Then he went off in a fury. At this, the priests went in again, and stood weeping in front of the altarand the Temple, saying,
37 « Tu, o Signore, che eleggesti questa casa, perchè vi fosso invocato il tuo nome, ed essa fosse casa d'orazione e di preghiera pel tuo popolo,	37 'You have chosen this house to be cal ed by your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for yourpeople.
38 castiga quest'uomo e il suo esercito, falli perir sotto la spada; ricordati delle loro bestemmie, e non permettere che sussistano ».	38 Take vengeance on this man and on his army, and let them fal by the sword; remember theirblasphemies and give them no respite.'
39 Nicanore, lasciata Gerusalemme, s'accampò vicino a Betoron, e s'unì a lui l'esercito della Siria,	39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Horon, where he was joined by an army from Syria.
40 mentre Giuda con tre mila uomini s'accampava in Adarsa. Giuda pregò e disse:	40 Judas, meanwhile, camped at Adasa with three thousand men, and offered this prayer,
41 « O Signore, l'angelo tuo, siccome i nunzi mandati da Sennacherib bestemmiarono contro di te, scese e ne uccise centottantacinque mila.	41 'When the king's envoys blasphemed, your angel went out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men.
42 Così in questo giorno stermina dinanzi a noi quest'esercito, affinchè tutti gli altri riconoscano come egli abbia indegnamente parlato del tuo santuario: giudicalo secondo la sua malvagità ».	42 In the same way let us see you crush this army today, so that everyone else may know that this manhas spoken blasphemously against your sanctuary: pass judgement on him as his wickedness deserves!'
43 Gli eserciti attaccarono la battaglia ai tredici del mese di Adar: le truppe di Nicànore furono sconfitte, e Nicànore fu il primo a morire nel combattimento.	43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth of the month Adar, and Nicanor's army was crushed, hehimself being the first to fal in the battle.
44 Le truppe di Nicànore, veduto Nicànore tra i morti, gettarono le armi e fuggirono.	44 When Nicanor's soldiers saw him fal , they threw down their arms and fled.
45 I Giudei l'inseguirono per un'intera giornata, da Adazer fino a Gazara, sonando dietro ad essi le trombe, come segnale.	45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to the approaches of Gezer; they sounded theirtrumpets in warning as they fol owed them,
46 Così la gente usciva dai castelli di Giuda che erano all'intorno, e dava loro addosso in modo da far loro voltar la faccia ai vincitori, e cosi perirono tutti sotto la spada non ne restò neppure uno.	46 and people came out of al the surrounding Judaean vil ages to encircle the fugitives, who then turnedback on their own men. Al fel by the sword, not one being left alive.
47 (I Giudei) presero le loro spoglie, troncarono a Nicànore la testa e la mano destra, che egli aveva alzata con tanta superbia, le portarono e le appesero in vista di Gerusalemme.	47 Having col ected the spoils and booty, they cut off Nicanor's head and the right hand he had stretchedout in a display of insolence; these were taken and displayed within sight of Jerusalem.
48 Il popolo fu ricolmo di gioia, e passarono quel giorno in gran festa.	48 The people were overjoyed and kept that day as a great holiday:
49 Fu stabilito che ogni anno, ai tredici del mese di Adar, fosse celebrata quella festa.	49 indeed they decided to celebrate it annual y on the thirteenth of Adar.
50 E la terra di Giuda ebbe pace per un po' di tempo.	50 For a short while Judaea enjoyed peace.
