1 - Preso allora Samuele un'ampollina d'olio, la versò sul capo di Saul, poi, baciatolo, gli disse: «Ecco, il Signore ti ha unto come principe della sua eredità e tu libererai il suo popolo dalle mani dei nemici che gli stanno attorno. E questo sarà il segno che Dio ti ha unto come principe;	1 Samuel took a phial of oil and poured it on Saul's head; he then kissed him and said, 'Has not Yahwehanointed you as leader of his people Israel? You are the man who is to govern Yahweh's people and save themfrom the power of the enemies surrounding them. The sign for you that Yahweh has anointed you as prince ofhis heritage is this:
2 Oggi, quando tu sarai partito da me, presso il sepolcro di Rachele, ai confini meridionali di Beniamino, troverai due uomini che ti diranno: - Le asine, delle quali andavi in cerca, furono trovate, e tuo padre, smesso il pensiero delle asine, è in pena per voi e va dicendo: "Che cosa farò [per ritrovare] il figlio mio?". -	2 after leaving me today, you will meet two men near the tomb of Rachel, on the frontier of Benjamin . . .and they wil say to you, "The donkeys which you went looking for have been found, and your father has lostinterest in the matter of the donkeys and is worrying about you and wondering, What am I to do about my son?"
3 E quando, partito di là, sarai passato oltre e arriverai alla quercia di Tabor, ti incontrerai con tre uomini che salgono ad [adorare] Dio in Betel, portando l'uno tre capretti, un altro tre focacce di pane e il terzo un otre di vino.	3 Going on from there, you wil come to the Oak of Tabor, where you will meet three men going up toGod at Bethel; one wil be carrying three kids, one three loaves of bread and the third a skin of wine.
4 Dopo averti salutato, essi ti daranno due pani che riceverai dalle loro mani.	4 They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread which you must accept from them.
5 Verrai quindi al colle di Dio, dove sta la guarnigione dei Filistei, e al tuo entrare in città ti si farà incontro una schiera di profeti che scenderanno dall'alto luogo e, preceduti da un salterio, da un timpano, da un flauto e da una cetra, profeteranno.	5 After this, you wil come to Gibeah of God (where the Philistine garrison is) and, when you are justoutside the town, you wil meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place, headed by lyre,tambourine, pipe and harp; they wil be in a state of ecstasy.
6 E lo spirito del Signore t'investirà e profeterai con loro e sarai cambiato in tutt'altro uomo.	6 The spirit of Yahweh will then seize on you, and you wil go into ecstasy with them, and be changed into another man.
7 Quando ti saranno avvenuti tutti questi segni, fa' pure quanto ti si offrirà da fare, chè il Signore è teco.	7 When these signs have occurred, act as occasion serves, for God is with you.
8 E discenderai prima di me a Galgala (perchè io discenderò a te) per offrire un'oblazione e immolare vittime pacifiche. Tu mi attenderai sette giorni, fin tanto che io non venga a te, e ti mostri quel che tu debba fare».	8 You wil then go down, ahead of me, to Gilgal, and I shall join you there to make burnt offerings and tooffer communion sacrifices. You must wait seven days for me to come to you, and I shal then reveal to you whatyou must do.'
9 Non appena [Saul] ebbe voltate le spalle per andarsene da Samuele, Iddio gli cambiò il cuore e in quel medesimo giorno, si verificarono tutti quei segni [predetti].	9 As soon as he had turned his back to leave Samuel, God changed his heart. And al these signsoccurred that very day . . .
10 Arrivati al colle indicato, gli venne incontro la schiera dei profeti, lo spirito del Signore lo investì ed egli si diè a profetare in mezzo a loro.	10 From there, they came to Gibeah: and there was a group of prophets coming to meet him! The spiritof God seized on him and he fell into ecstasy with them.
11 Quanti prima lo avevano conosciuto, vedendolo ora profetare in compagnia dei profeti, si chiedevano a vicenda: «Che è mai avvenuto al figlio di Cis? Saul è forse anch'egli tra i profeti?».	11 Seeing him prophesying with the prophets, al the people who had known him previously said to oneanother, 'What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul one of the prophets too?'
12 E l'uno rispose all'altro: «E chi è il loro padre?». Passò pertanto in proverbio [il detto]: «Saul è forse anch'egli tra i profeti?».	12 And one of the local people retorted, 'But who is their father?' Hence the origin of the proverb: Is Saulone of the prophets too?
13 Finito che ebbe di profetare, andò all'alto luogo.	13 When he came out of his ecstasy, he went into Gibeah.
14 Lo zio di Saul disse a lui e al servo: «Dove siete andati?». «In cerca delle asine», risposero «e, non avendole trovate, andammo da Samuele».	14 Saul's uncle asked him and his servant, 'Where have you been?' 'Looking for the donkeys,' hereplied, 'and when we could not find them anywhere, we went to Samuel.'
15 Soggiunse lo zio: «Fammi sapere che cosa ti ha detto Samuele».	15 Saul's uncle said, 'Tel me please what Samuel said to you.'
16 Rispose Saul allo zio: «Egli ci fece sapere che le asine erano state trovate». Ma di quello che Samuele gli aveva detto riguardo al regno non gli riferì nulla.	16 Saul said to his uncle, 'He merely told us that the donkeys were already found,' but did not mentionanything that Samuel had said about the kingship.
17 Samuele convocò poi tutto il popolo presso il Signore a Masfa	17 Samuel summoned the people to Yahweh at Mizpah
18 e disse ai figli d'Israele: «Queste cose dice il Signore Dio di Israele: - Io trassi Israele dall'Egitto e vi liberai dalle mani degli Egiziani e dalle mani di tutti i re che vi opprimevano,	18 and said to the Israelites, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "I brought Israel out of Egypt anddelivered you from the power of the Egyptians and of al the kingdoms that were oppressing you."
19 e voi oggi rigettaste il vostro Dio che solo vi salvò da tutti i vostri mali e da tutte le vostre tribolazioni e voi diceste: " Non più così: ma costituisci sopra di noi un re ". - Ora dunque presentatevi al Signore tribù per tribù, famiglia per famiglia».	19 But today you have rejected your God, him who saves you from al your difficulties and troubles; andyou have said, "No, you must set a king over us." Very well, take your positions before Yahweh, tribe by tribeand clan by clan.'
20 Samuele fece allora accostare tutte le tribù d'Israele e dalla sorte venne designata la tribù di Beniamino.	20 Samuel then made al the tribes of Israel come forward, and the lot indicated the tribe of Benjamin.
21 Fece parimenti accostare la tribù di Beniamino secondo le sue famiglie e dalla sorte venne designata la famiglia di Metri e così si giunse fino [alla designazione] di Saul, figlio di Cis. Andarono quindi in cerca di lui, ma non fu possibile trovarlo.	21 He then made the tribe of Benjamin come forward clan by clan, and the lot indicated the clan ofMatri; he then made the clan of Matri come forward one by one, and the lot indicated Saul son of Kish, but whenthey looked for him, he was not to be found.
22 Consultato allora il Signore se sarebbe venuto colà, il Signore rispose: «Ecco, egli s'è nascosto in casa».	22 Again they consulted Yahweh, 'Has the man come here?' Yahweh replied, 'There he is, hidingamong the baggage.'
23 Corsero a trarlo di là, e quando egli si presentò in mezzo al popolo si trovò che dalle spalle in su era più alto di tutto il popolo.	23 So they ran and fetched him out and, as he stood among the people, he was head and shoulderstal er than any of them.
24 Disse allora Samuele a tutto il popolo: «Certamente vedete chi è colui che il Signore si è scelto e che non v'ha tra tutto il popolo chi sia pari a lui». E tutto il popolo gridò: «Viva il re!».	24 Samuel then said to all the people, 'You have seen the man whom Yahweh has chosen, and thatamong the whole people he has no equal.' And all the people acclaimed him, shouting, 'Long live the king!'
25 Espose quindi Samuele la legge del regno e la scrisse su un libro che fu riposto al cospetto del Signore; poi Samuele rimandò tutto il popolo, ciascuno a casa sua.	25 Samuel then explained the king's constitutional position to the people and inscribed this in a bookwhich he placed before Yahweh. Samuel then sent al the people away, everyone back to his home.
26 Anche Saul se ne ritornò a casa sua in Gabaa e con lui andò pure parte dell'esercito, a cui Dio aveva toccato il cuore.	26 Saul too went home to Gibeah and with him went those strong men whose hearts God had touched.
27 Ma i figli di Belial dissero: «Riuscirà costui a salvarci?» e lo disprezzarono e non gli portarono doni. Egli però faceva vista di non accorgersi.	27 But there were some scoundrels who said, 'How can this fellow save us?' These treated him withcontempt and offered him no present.
