BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - E il sommo sacerdote parlò, dicendogli: «Stanno proprio così le cose udite?».	1 The high priest asked, 'Is this true?'
2 Egli disse: «Fratelli e padri, vogliate ascoltarmi. Il Dio della gloria apparve ad Abramo, nostro padre, mentr'era in Mesopotamia, prima che andasse a stabilirsi in Caran,	2 He replied, 'My brothers, my fathers, listen to what I have to say. The God of glory appeared to ourancestor Abraham, while he was in Mesopotamia before settling in Haran,
3 e gli disse: - Esci dal tuo paese e dal tuo parentado, e vieni nel paese che io ti mostrerò. -	3 and said to him, "Leave your country, your kindred and your father's house for this country which I shalshow you."
4 Allora egli uscì dal paese de' Caldei, e si stabilì in Caran. Di là, dopo la morte di suo padre, Iddio lo fece venir in questo paese dove adesso abitate.	4 So he left Chaldaea and settled in Haran; and after his father died God made him leave that place andcome to this land where you are living today.
5 E non gli diede ivi in possesso neppure la larghezza d'un piede, ma gli promise darne a lui il possesso ne' suoi discendenti dopo di lui; e questo glielo promise quand'egli non aveva ancora alcun figliuolo.	5 God did not give him any property in this land or even a foothold, yet he promised to give it to him andafter him to his descendants, childless though he was.
6 Iddio gli disse che la discendenza di lui sarebbe pellegrina in terra straniera, ridotta in servitù e maltrattata per quattrocent'anni.	6 The actual words God used when he spoke to him are that his descendants would be exiles in a landnot their own, where they would be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years.
7 Ma disse pure: - Io giudicherò la nazione alla quale avranno servito; e dopo la prova usciranno, e serviranno a me nel luogo mio. -	7 "But I wil bring judgement on the nation that enslaves them," God said, "and after this they wil leave, and worship me in this place."
8 Poi ci fu il patto della circoncisione; e così Abramo, avuto Isacco, lo circoncise l'ottavo giorno; Isacco circoncise Giacobbe, e Giacobbe i dodici patriarchi.	8 Then he made the covenant of circumcision with him: and so when his son Isaac was born Abrahamcircumcised him on the eighth day; similarly Isaac circumcised Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.
9 E i patriarchi, invidiosi di Giuseppe, lo vendereno per essere menato in Egitto; ma Dio era con lui;	9 'The patriarchs were jealous of Joseph and sold him into slavery in Egypt. But God was with him,
10 e lo liberò da tutte le sue tribolazioni, e gli diede grazia e sapienza davanti a Faraone, re d'Egitto, che lo costituì governatore del regno e di tutta la sua casa.	10 and rescued him from al his miseries by making him so wise that he won the favour of Pharaoh king ofEgypt, who made him governor of Egypt and put him in charge of his household.
11 Venne poi una carestia in tutto l'Egitto e in Canaan; la miseria era grande, e i nostri padri non trovavan di che vivere.	11 Then a famine set in that caused much suffering throughout Egypt and Canaan, and our ancestorscould find nothing to eat.
12 Ma avendo udito Giacobbe che in Egitto c'era del grano, vi mandò una prima volta i nostri padri.	12 When Jacob heard that there were supplies in Egypt, he sent our ancestors there on a first visit;
13 La seconda volta Giuseppe fu riconosciuto da' suoi fratelli, e Faraone seppe della famiglia di Giuseppe.	13 and on the second Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Pharaoh came to know his origin.
14 Allora Giuseppe mandò per Giacobbe suo padre e per tutto il suo parentado, ch'era di settantacinque anime;	14 Joseph then sent for his father Jacob and his whole family, a total of seventy-five people.
15 e Giacobbe scese in Egitto, e vi morì lui e i padri nostri:	15 Jacob went down into Egypt and after he and our ancestors had died there,
16 i quali tutti furon trasportati a Sichem, e posti nel sepolcro che Abramo aveva comprato a danaro da' figli di Emor in Sichem.	16 their bodies were brought back to Shechem and buried in the tomb that Abraham had bought formoney from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem.
17 Ma come si avvicinava il tempo della promessa che Dio aveva fatto ad Abramo, il popolo crebbe e si moltiplicò in Egitto;	17 'As the time drew near for God to fulfil the promise he had solemnly made to Abraham, our nation inEgypt became very powerful and numerous,
18 e venne su un altro re, che nulla sapeva di Giuseppe.	18 there came to power in Egypt a new king who had never heard of Joseph.
19 Costui, usando astuzie contro la nostra stirpe, trattò duramente i nostri padri, sino a comandar loro d'esporre i neonati perchè non vivessero.	19 He took precautions and wore down our race, forcing our ancestors to expose their babies rather thanletting them live.
20 In quel tempo nacque Mosè, caro a Dio; e fu nutrito per tre mesi in casa del padre suo;	20 It was at this time that Moses was born, a fine child before God. He was looked after for three monthsin his father's house,
21 ma poi che fu esposto, la figliuola di Faraone lo raccolse e se lo allevò come figlio.	21 and after he had been exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up like a son.
22 E così, istruito in tutta la sapienza degli Egiziani, divenne potente in parole e in opere.	22 So Moses was taught all the wisdom of the Egyptians and became a man with power both in hisspeech and in his actions.
23 E quando fu su' quarant'anni, gli entrò in cuore di visitar i suoi fratelli, i figli d'Israele.	23 'At the age of forty he decided to visit his kinsmen, the Israelites.
24 E vistone uno maltrattato, lo difese e vendicò l'oppresso, uccidendo l'Egiziano.	24 When he saw one of them being il -treated he went to his defence and rescued the man by kil ing theEgyptian.
25 E' si pensava che i suoi fratelli capirebbero che Dio li voleva salvare per mezzo di lui; ma essi non l'intesero.	25 He thought his brothers would realise that through him God would liberate them, but they did not.
26 Il giorno seguente, comparve tra loro, mentre alcuni litigavano, e li esortò alla pace, dicendo: - O uomini, voi siete fratelli, perchè vi maltrattate l'un l'altro? -	26 The next day, when he came across some of them fighting, he tried to reconcile them, and said,"Friends, you are brothers; why are you hurting each other?"
27 Ma colui che maltrattava il prossimo, lo respinse, e gli disse: - Chi ti ha costituito nostro capo e giudice?	27 But the man who was attacking his kinsman pushed him aside, saying, "And who appointed you to beprince over us and judge?
28 Mi vuoi forse uccidere, come ieri uccidesti l'Egiziano? -	28 Do you intend to kill me as you kil ed the Egyptian yesterday?"
29 A tal parola Mosè fuggì, e se n'andò come forestiero nella terra di Madian, dov'ebbe due figliuoli.	29 Moses fled when he heard this and he went to dwel in the land of Midian, where he fathered two sons.
30 In capo a quarant'anni, un angelo gli apparve nel deserto del monte Sion, nella fiamma d'un roveto ardente.	30 'When forty years were fulfil ed, in the desert near Mount Sinai, an angel appeared to him in a flameblazing from a bush that was on fire.
31 E Mosè, veduto ciò, si stupì di quella visione; e come si accostava per considerar la cosa, si fece udire questa voce del Signore:	31 Moses was amazed by what he saw. As he went nearer to look at it, the voice of the Lord was heard,
32 - Io sono il Dio de' tuoi padri, il Dio di Abramo, il Dio di Isacco, il Dio di Giacobbe. - E Mosè, tutto tremante, non ardiva più guardare.	32 "I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob." Moses trembled and wasafraid to look.
33 Allora il Signore gli disse: - Tògliti i calzari da' piedi, perchè il luogo dove stai è terra santa.	33 The Lord said to him, "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.
34 Sì, l'ho veduta l'afflizione del mio popolo che è in Egitto; ho udito i loro gemiti, e son disceso per liberarli. Or dunque, vieni; io manderò te in Egitto. -	34 I have seen the misery of my people in Egypt, I have heard them crying for help, and I have comedown to rescue them. So come here; I am sending you into Egypt."
35 Guardate: questo Mosè, che avevan rinnegato dicendo: - Chi ti ha costituito capo e giudice? -, Dio lo mandò come capo e liberatore sotto la guida dell'angelo apparsogli nel roveto.	35 'It was the same Moses that they had disowned when they said, "Who appointed you to be our leader and judge?" whom God sent to be both leader and redeemer through the angel who had appeared to him in thebush.
36 Fu lui che li trasse fuor dell'Egitto, facendo prodigi e miracoli, nel paese nel Mar Rosso e nel deserto, per quaranta anni.	36 It was this man who led them out, after performing miracles and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea andin the desert for forty years.
37 Questo è quel Mosè, che disse a' figliuoli d'Israele: - Dio vi susciterà di mezzo a' vostri fratelli un Profeta; ascoltatelo, come me avete ascoltato. -	37 It was this Moses who told the sons of Israel, "From among your own brothers God wil raise up aprophet like me."
38 È questi che si trovò nell'assemblea del deserto con l'angelo che gli parlava dal monte Sinai e co' padri nostri, e ricevette parole di vita per darle a noi.	38 When they held the assembly in the desert it was he who was with our ancestors and the angel whohad spoken to him on Mount Sinai; it was he who was entrusted with words of life to hand on to us.
39 Eppure i padri nostri rifiutarono di ubbidirgli, anzi lo rinnegarono, e, rimpiangendo in cuor loro l'Egitto,	39 This is the man that our ancestors refused to listen to; they pushed him aside, went back to Egypt intheir thoughts,
40 dissero ad Aronne: - Facci degli dèi che ci guidino; perchè di questo Mosè che ci trasse dalla terra d'Egitto, noi non sappiamo che ne sia stato. -	40 and said to Aaron, "Make us a god to go at our head; for that Moses, the man who brought us herefrom Egypt, we do not know what has become of him."
41 E in que' giorni fecero un vitello, offersero un sacrificio a codest'idolo, ed esultarono dell'opera che avevan fatta con le loro mani.	41 It was then that they made the statue of a calf and offered sacrifice to the idol. They were perfectlyhappy with something they had made for themselves.
42 Ma Dio si rivolse da loro, e li abbandonò al culto degli idoli, come sta scritto nel libro de' profeti: "Casa d'Israele, eran forse vittime e sacrifici, che m'offrivate, durante i quarant'anni nel deserto,	42 God turned away from them and abandoned them to the worship of the army of heaven, as scripturesays in the book of the prophets: Did you bring me sacrifices and oblations those forty years in the desert, Houseof Israel?
43 quando vi portavate appresso la tenda di Moloc e l'astro di Remfan, idoli che vi eravate fabbricati per prostrarvici dinanzi? Perciò, io vi farò deportare al di là di Babilonia".	43 No, you carried the tent of Moloch on your shoulders and the star of the god Rephan, the idols youmade for yourselves to adore, and so now I am about to drive you into captivity beyond Babylon.
44 Il tabernacolo della testimonianza era co' padri nostri nel deserto, come Dio aveva ordinato parlando a Mosè, che lo facesse nella forma che gli fu data a vedere;	44 'While they were in the desert our ancestors possessed the Tent of Testimony that had beenconstructed according to the instructions God gave Moses, tel ing him to work to the design he had been shown.
45 e poi che l'ebbero ricevuto, i padri nostri, guidati da Giosuè, lo introdussero qui, dopo la sottomissione de' popoli che Dio scacciò d'innanzi a loro sino a' giorni di David,	45 It was handed down from one ancestor of ours to another until Joshua brought it into the country thathad belonged to the nations which were driven out by God before us. Here it stayed until the time of David.
46 il quale trovò grazia presso Dio e chiese di preparare una ferma dimora al Dio di Giacobbe.	46 He won God's favour and asked permission to find a dwel ing for the House of Jacob,
47 Ma fu Salomone quello che gli edificò una casa.	47 though it was Solomon who actual y built a house for God.
48 L'Altissimo però non abita in templi fatti da man d'uomo come dice il profeta:	48 Even so the Most High does not live in a house that human hands have built: for as the prophet says:
49 - Mio trono è il cielo: e la terra è sgabello a' miei piedi. Qual casa mi edificherete voi? dice il Signore, o, qual sarà il luogo del mio riposo?	49 With heaven my throne and earth my footstool, what house could you build me, says the Lord, whatplace for me to rest,
50 Non ha la mia mano formate tutte queste cose? -	50 when al these things were made by me?
51 Gente di dura cervice, incirconcisi di cuore e d'orecchi, voi resistete sempre allo Spirito Santo! Come fecero i padri vostri, allo stesso modo fate voi.	51 'You stubborn people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears. You are always resisting the Holy Spirit,just as your ancestors used to do.
52 Qual dei profeti non perseguitarono i padri vostri? Uccisero perfino quelli che preannunziavano la venuta del Giusto, del quale voi ora siete stati i traditori e gli assassini!	52 Can you name a single prophet your ancestors never persecuted? They kil ed those who foretold thecoming of the Upright One, and now you have become his betrayers, his murderers.
53 Voi, che avete ricevuta la legge come trasmessavi da angeli, e non l'avete osservata».	53 In spite of being given the Law through angels, you have not kept it.'
54 All'udir queste cose, fremevan di rabbia nei loro cuori, e digrignavano i denti contro di lui.	54 They were infuriated when they heard this, and ground their teeth at him.
55 Ma egli, pieno di Spirito Santo, fissati gli occhi nel cielo, vide la gloria di Dio, e Gesù stare alla destra di Dio.	55 But Stephen, fil ed with the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesusstanding at God's right hand.
56 E disse: «Ecco, io vedo i cieli aperti, e il Figliuol dell'uomo stare alla destra di Dio».	56 'Look! I can see heaven thrown open,' he said, 'and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.'
57 Quelli, con grandi strida, si turaron gli orecchi, e tutti insieme gli si avventarono addosso;	57 Al the members of the council shouted out and stopped their ears with their hands; then they made aconcerted rush at him,
58 e, trascinatolo fuori della città, si diedero a lapidarlo. I testimoni deposero le loro vesti a' piedi di un giovane, chiamato Saulo.	58 thrust him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses put down their clothes at the feet of a youngman cal ed Saul.
59 E lapidavano Stefano, mentr'egli invocava Gesù e diceva: «Signore Gesù, ricevi lo spirito mio».	59 As they were stoning him, Stephen said in invocation, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.'
60 Poi, caduto ginocchioni, gridò a gran voce: «Signore, non imputar loro questo peccato». E, detto questo, si addormentò nel Signore. E Saulo consentì alla morte di lui.	60 Then he knelt down and said aloud, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.' And with these words hefel asleep.
