1 Prima della festa di Pasqua Gesù, sapendo che era venuta la sua ora di passare da questo mondo al Padre, avendo amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò fino alla fine.	1 Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world tothe Father, having loved those who were his in the world, loved them to the end.
2 Durante la cena, quando il diavolo aveva già messo in cuore a Giuda, figlio di Simone Iscariota, di tradirlo,	2 They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, tobetray him.
3 Gesù, sapendo che il Padre gli aveva dato tutto nelle mani e che era venuto da Dio e a Dio ritornava,	3 Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God andwas returning to God,
4 si alzò da tavola, depose le vesti, prese un asciugamano e se lo cinse attorno alla vita.	4 and he got up from table, removed his outer garments and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist;
5 Poi versò dell’acqua nel catino e cominciò a lavare i piedi dei discepoli e ad asciugarli con l’asciugamano di cui si era cinto.	5 he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with thetowel he was wearing.
6 Venne dunque da Simon Pietro e questi gli disse: «Signore, tu lavi i piedi a me?».	6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'
7 Rispose Gesù: «Quello che io faccio, tu ora non lo capisci; lo capirai dopo».	7 Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you wil understand.'
8 Gli disse Pietro: «Tu non mi laverai i piedi in eterno!». Gli rispose Gesù: «Se non ti laverò, non avrai parte con me».	8 'Never!' said Peter. 'You shal never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can haveno share with me.' Simon Peter said,
9 Gli disse Simon Pietro: «Signore, non solo i miei piedi, ma anche le mani e il capo!».	9 'Well then, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head as wel !'
10 Soggiunse Gesù: «Chi ha fatto il bagno, non ha bisogno di lavarsi se non i piedi ed è tutto puro; e voi siete puri, ma non tutti».	10 Jesus said, 'No one who has had a bath needs washing, such a person is clean all over. You too areclean, though not all of you are.'
11 Sapeva infatti chi lo tradiva; per questo disse: «Non tutti siete puri».	11 He knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said, 'though not al of you are'.
12 Quando ebbe lavato loro i piedi, riprese le sue vesti, sedette di nuovo e disse loro: «Capite quello che ho fatto per voi?	12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Doyou understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?
13 Voi mi chiamate il Maestro e il Signore, e dite bene, perché lo sono.	13 You cal me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.
14 Se dunque io, il Signore e il Maestro, ho lavato i piedi a voi, anche voi dovete lavare i piedi gli uni agli altri.	14 If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.
15 Vi ho dato un esempio, infatti, perché anche voi facciate come io ho fatto a voi.	15 I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.
16 In verità, in verità io vi dico: un servo non è più grande del suo padrone, né un inviato è più grande di chi lo ha mandato.	16 'In al truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one whosent him.
17 Sapendo queste cose, siete beati se le mettete in pratica.	17 'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.
18 Non parlo di tutti voi; io conosco quelli che ho scelto, ma deve compiersi la Scrittura: Colui che mangia il mio pane ha alzato contro di me il suo calcagno.	18 I am not speaking about al of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must befulfil ed: 'He who shares my table takes advantage of me.
19 Ve lo dico fin d’ora, prima che accada, perché, quando sarà avvenuto, crediate che Io Sono.	19 I tel you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.
20 In verità, in verità io vi dico: chi accoglie colui che io manderò, accoglie me; chi accoglie me, accoglie colui che mi ha mandato».	20 In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me,welcomes the one who sent me.'
21 Dette queste cose, Gesù fu profondamente turbato e dichiarò: «In verità, in verità io vi dico: uno di voi mi tradirà».	21 Having said this, Jesus was deeply disturbed and declared, 'In al truth I tel you, one of you is goingto betray me.'
22 I discepoli si guardavano l’un l’altro, non sapendo bene di chi parlasse.	22 The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he meant.
23 Ora uno dei discepoli, quello che Gesù amava, si trovava a tavola al fianco di Gesù.	23 The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus;
24 Simon Pietro gli fece cenno di informarsi chi fosse quello di cui parlava.	24 Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means,'
25 Ed egli, chinandosi sul petto di Gesù, gli disse: «Signore, chi è?».	25 so leaning back close to Jesus' chest he said, 'Who is it, Lord?'
26 Rispose Gesù: «È colui per il quale intingerò il boccone e glielo darò». E, intinto il boccone, lo prese e lo diede a Giuda, figlio di Simone Iscariota.	26 Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I give the piece of bread that I dip in the dish.' And when hehad dipped the piece of bread he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.
27 Allora, dopo il boccone, Satana entrò in lui. Gli disse dunque Gesù: «Quello che vuoi fare, fallo presto».	27 At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you aregoing to do, do quickly.'
28 Nessuno dei commensali capì perché gli avesse detto questo;	28 None of the others at table understood why he said this.
29 alcuni infatti pensavano che, poiché Giuda teneva la cassa, Gesù gli avesse detto: «Compra quello che ci occorre per la festa», oppure che dovesse dare qualche cosa ai poveri.	29 Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy whatwe need for the festival,' or tel ing him to give something to the poor.
30 Egli, preso il boccone, subito uscì. Ed era notte.	30 As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. It was night.
31 Quando fu uscito, Gesù disse: «Ora il Figlio dell’uomo è stato glorificato, e Dio è stato glorificato in lui.	31 When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has beenglorified.
32 Se Dio è stato glorificato in lui, anche Dio lo glorificherà da parte sua e lo glorificherà subito.	32 If God has been glorified in him, God wil in turn glorify him in himself, and wil glorify him very soon.
33 Figlioli, ancora per poco sono con voi; voi mi cercherete ma, come ho detto ai Giudei, ora lo dico anche a voi: dove vado io, voi non potete venire.	33 Little children, I shal be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews,where I am going, you cannot come.
34 Vi do un comandamento nuovo: che vi amiate gli uni gli altri. Come io ho amato voi, così amatevi anche voi gli uni gli altri.	34 I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have lovedyou.
35 Da questo tutti sapranno che siete miei discepoli: se avete amore gli uni per gli altri».	35 It is by your love for one another, that everyone wil recognise you as my disciples.
36 Simon Pietro gli disse: «Signore, dove vai?». Gli rispose Gesù: «Dove io vado, tu per ora non puoi seguirmi; mi seguirai più tardi».	36 Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Now you cannot fol ow me where I amgoing, but later you shall fol ow me.'
37 Pietro disse: «Signore, perché non posso seguirti ora? Darò la mia vita per te!».	37 Peter said to him, 'Why can I not fol ow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'
38 Rispose Gesù: «Darai la tua vita per me? In verità, in verità io ti dico: non canterà il gallo, prima che tu non m’abbia rinnegato tre volte.	38 'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'In al truth I tel you, before the cock crows you wilhave disowned me three times.'
