1 Il Signore parlò a Mosè e disse:	1 The LORD said to Moses,
2 «Manda uomini a esplorare la terra di Canaan che sto per dare agli Israeliti. Manderete un uomo per ogni tribù dei suoi padri: tutti siano prìncipi fra loro».	2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."
3 Mosè li mandò dal deserto di Paran, secondo il comando del Signore; quegli uomini erano tutti capi degli Israeliti.	3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;
4 Questi erano i loro nomi: per la tribù di Ruben, Sammùa figlio di Zaccur;	4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;
5 per la tribù di Simeone, Safat figlio di Orì;	5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;
6 per la tribù di Giuda, Caleb figlio di Iefunnè;	6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;
7 per la tribù di Ìssacar, Igal figlio di Giuseppe;	7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;
8 per la tribù di Èfraim, Osea figlio di Nun;	8 Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;
9 per la tribù di Beniamino, Paltì figlio di Rafu;	9 Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;
10 per la tribù di Zàbulon, Gaddièl figlio di Sodì;	10 Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;
11 per la tribù di Giuseppe, cioè per la tribù di Manasse, Gaddì figlio di Susì;	11 Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with
12 per la tribù di Dan, Ammièl figlio di Ghemallì;	12 Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;
13 per la tribù di Aser, Setur figlio di Michele;	13 Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;
14 per la tribù di Nèftali, Nacbì figlio di Vofsì;	14 Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;
15 per la tribù di Gad, Gheuèl figlio di Machì.	15 Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.
16 Questi sono i nomi degli uomini che Mosè mandò a esplorare la terra. Mosè diede a Osea, figlio di Nun, il nome di Giosuè.	16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.
17 Mosè dunque li mandò a esplorare la terra di Canaan e disse loro: «Salite attraverso il Negheb; poi salirete alla regione montana	17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,
18 e osserverete che terra sia, che popolo l’abiti, se forte o debole, se scarso o numeroso;	18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?
19 come sia la regione che esso abita, se buona o cattiva, e come siano le città dove abita, se siano accampamenti o luoghi fortificati;	19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?
20 come sia il terreno, se grasso o magro, se vi siano alberi o no. Siate coraggiosi e prendete dei frutti del luogo». Erano i giorni delle primizie dell’uva.	20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.
21 Salirono dunque ed esplorarono la terra dal deserto di Sin fino a Recob, all’ingresso di Camat.	21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.
22 Salirono attraverso il Negheb e arrivarono fino a Ebron, dove erano Achimàn, Sesài e Talmài, discendenti di Anak. Ebron era stata edificata sette anni prima di Tanis d’Egitto.	22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23 Giunsero fino alla valle di Escol e là tagliarono un tralcio con un grappolo d’uva, che portarono in due con una stanga, e presero anche melagrane e fichi.	23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.
24 Quel luogo fu chiamato valle di Escol a causa del grappolo d’uva che gli Israeliti vi avevano tagliato.	24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.
25 Al termine di quaranta giorni tornarono dall’esplorazione della terra	25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,
26 e andarono da Mosè e Aronne e da tutta la comunità degli Israeliti nel deserto di Paran, verso Kades; riferirono ogni cosa a loro e a tutta la comunità e mostrarono loro i frutti della terra.	26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.
27 Raccontarono: «Siamo andati nella terra alla quale tu ci avevi mandato; vi scorrono davvero latte e miele e questi sono i suoi frutti.	27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.
28 Ma il popolo che abita quella terra è potente, le città sono fortificate e assai grandi e vi abbiamo anche visto i discendenti di Anak.	28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.
29 Gli Amaleciti abitano la regione del Negheb; gli Ittiti, i Gebusei e gli Amorrei le montagne; i Cananei abitano presso il mare e lungo la riva del Giordano».	29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."
30 Caleb fece tacere il popolo davanti a Mosè e disse: «Dobbiamo salire e conquistarla, perché certo vi riusciremo».	30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."
31 Ma gli uomini che vi erano andati con lui dissero: «Non riusciremo ad andare contro questo popolo, perché è più forte di noi».	31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."
32 E diffusero tra gli Israeliti il discredito sulla terra che avevano esplorato, dicendo: «La terra che abbiamo attraversato per esplorarla è una terra che divora i suoi abitanti; tutto il popolo che vi abbiamo visto è gente di alta statura.	32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,
33 Vi abbiamo visto i giganti, discendenti di Anak, della razza dei giganti, di fronte ai quali ci sembrava di essere come locuste, e così dovevamo sembrare a loro».	33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."
