1 Giuda venne a conoscere la fama dei Romani: che essi erano molto potenti e favorivano tutti quelli che simpatizzavano per loro e accordavano amicizia a quanti si rivolgevano a loro e che erano forti e potenti.	1 Now Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans: how strong they were, and how wel disposedtowards any who made common cause with them, making a treaty of friendship with anyone who approachedthem.
2 Gli furono narrate le loro guerre e le loro imprese gloriose compiute tra i Galli e come li avessero vinti e resi tributari;	2 (And, indeed, they were extremely powerful.) He had been told of their wars and of their prowessamong the Gauls, whom they had conquered and put under tribute;
3 quanto avevano compiuto nella Spagna per impadronirsi delle miniere d’oro e d’argento che vi sono,	3 and of al they had done in the province of Spain to gain possession of the silver and gold mines there,
4 e come avevano sottomesso tutta la regione con la loro saggezza e costanza, benché il paese fosse assai lontano da loro. Avevano vinto i re che erano venuti contro di loro dall’estremità della terra: li avevano sconfitti e avevano inflitto loro gravi colpi, mentre gli altri pagavano loro il tributo ogni anno.	4 making themselves masters of the whole country by their determination and perseverance, despite itsgreat distance from their own; of the kings who came from the ends of the earth to attack them, only to becrushed by them and overwhelmed with disaster, and of others who paid them annual tribute;
5 Avevano poi sconfitto in guerra e sottomesso Filippo e Perseo, re dei Chittìm, e quanti si erano sollevati contro di loro.	5 Philip, Perseus king of the Kittim, and others who had dared to make war on them, had been defeatedand reduced to subjection,
6 Antioco, il grande re dell’Asia, era sceso in guerra contro di loro con centoventi elefanti, cavalleria, carri e un esercito immenso, ma era stato sconfitto da loro,	6 while Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had advanced to attack them with a hundred and twentyelephants, cavalry, chariots and a very large army, had also suffered defeat at their hands;
7 lo avevano preso vivo e gli avevano imposto di pagare, lui e i suoi successori, un tributo ingente, di dare ostaggi e cedere	7 they had taken him alive and imposed on him and his successors, on agreed terms, the payment of anenormous tribute, the surrender of hostages, and the cession

9 I Greci avevano deciso di affrontarli e distruggerli,	9 Judas had also heard how, when the Greeks planned an expedition to destroy the Romans,
10 ma la cosa era stata da loro risaputa, e avevano mandato contro di loro un solo generale, erano venuti a battaglia con loro e molti caddero uccisi; avevano condotto in schiavitù le loro mogli e i loro figli e avevano saccheggiato i loro beni, avevano conquistato il paese, avevano abbattuto le loro fortezze e li avevano resi soggetti fino ad oggi.	10 the latter had got wind of it and, sending a single general against them, had fought a campaign inwhich they inflicted heavy casualties, carried their women and children away into captivity, pillaged their goods,subdued their country, tore down their fortresses and reduced them to a slavery lasting to the present day;
11 Avevano distrutto e soggiogato gli altri regni e le isole e quanti per avventura si erano opposti a loro. Con i loro amici invece e con quanti si appoggiavano a loro avevano mantenuto amicizia.	11 and how they had destroyed and subjugated al the other kingdoms and islands that resisted them.
12 Avevano assoggettato i re vicini e quelli lontani, e quanti sentivano il loro nome ne avevano timore.	12 But where their friends and those who relied on them were concerned, they had always stood by theirfriendship. They had subdued kings far and near, and al who heard their name went in terror of them.
13 Quelli che essi vogliono aiutare e far regnare, regnano; quelli che essi vogliono, li depongono, tanto si sono levati in alto.	13 One man, if they determined to help him and advance him to a throne, would certainly occupy it, whileanother, if they so determined, would find himself deposed; their influence was paramount.
14 Con tutti questi successi nessuno di loro si è imposto il diadema né si è rivestito di porpora per fregiarsene.	14 In spite of al this, no single one of them had assumed a crown or put on the purple for his ownaggrandisement.
15 Essi hanno costituito un consiglio e ogni giorno trecentoventi consiglieri si consultano continuamente riguardo al popolo, perché sia ben governato.	15 They had set up a senate, where three hundred and twenty councillors deliberated daily, constantlydebating how best to regulate public affairs.
16 Affidano il comando e il governo di tutti i loro domìni a uno di loro per un anno e tutti obbediscono a quello solo e non c’è in loro invidia né gelosia.	16 They entrusted their government to one man for a year at a time, with absolute power over their wholeempire, and this man was obeyed by al without envy or jealousy.
17 Giuda pertanto scelse Eupòlemo, figlio di Giovanni, figlio di Acco, e Giasone, figlio di Eleàzaro, e li inviò a Roma a stringere amicizia e alleanza,	17 Having chosen Eupolemus son of John, of the family of Accos, and Jason son of Eleazar, Judas sentthem to Rome to make a treaty of friendship and al iance with these people,
18 per liberarsi dal giogo, perché vedevano che il regno dei Greci riduceva Israele in schiavitù.	18 in the hope of being rid of the yoke, for they could see that Greek rule was reducing Israel to slavery.
19 Andarono fino a Roma con viaggio lunghissimo, entrarono nel Senato e incominciarono a dire:	19 The envoys made the lengthy journey to Rome and presented themselves before the Senate withtheir formal proposal:
20 «Giuda, chiamato anche Maccabeo, e i suoi fratelli e il popolo dei Giudei ci hanno inviati a voi, per concludere con voi alleanza e pace e per essere iscritti tra i vostri alleati e amici».	20 'Judas Maccabaeus and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to conclude a treatyof al iance and peace with you, and to enrol ourselves as your al ies and friends.'
21 Piacque loro la proposta.	21 The proposal met with the approval of the senators.
22 Questa è la copia della lettera che trascrissero su tavolette di bronzo e inviarono a Gerusalemme, perché vi rimanesse come documento di pace e alleanza per i Giudei:	22 Here is a copy of the rescript which they engraved on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem to be keptthere by the Jews as a record of peace and al iance:
23 «Ai Romani e alla nazione dei Giudei, prosperità per mare e per terra, sempre! Lontano da loro la spada nemica!	23 'Good fortune attend the Romans and the Jewish nation by sea and land for ever; may sword orenemy be far from them!
24 Se verrà mossa guerra, contro Roma anzitutto, o contro uno qualsiasi dei suoi alleati in tutto il suo dominio,	24 'If war comes first to Rome or any of her al ies throughout her dominions,
25 la nazione dei Giudei combatterà al loro fianco con piena lealtà, come permetteranno loro le circostanze;	25 the Jewish nation wil take action as her al y, as occasion may require, and do it wholeheartedly.
26 ai nemici non forniranno né procureranno grano, armi, denaro, navi, secondo quanto ha stabilito Roma, e osserveranno i loro impegni senza compenso.	26 They wil not give or supply to the enemy any grain, arms, money or ships: thus has Rome decided,and they are to honour their obligations without guarantees.
27 Allo stesso modo, se capiterà prima una guerra alla nazione dei Giudei, combatteranno con loro i Romani con tutto l’animo, come permetteranno loro le circostanze;	27 In the same way, if war comes first to the Jewish nation, the Romans wil support them energetical yas occasion may offer,
28 ai nemici non forniranno grano, armi, denaro, navi, secondo quanto ha stabilito Roma, e osserveranno questi impegni senza inganno.	28 and the aggressor wil not be furnished with grain, arms, money or ships: such is the Roman decision,and they wil honour these obligations without treachery.
29 In questi termini i Romani hanno stabilito un’alleanza con il popolo dei Giudei.	29 Such are the articles under which the Romans have concluded their treaty with the Jewish people.
30 Se dopo queste decisioni vorranno gli uni o gli altri aggiungere o togliere qualche cosa, lo faranno di comune accordo e quanto avranno aggiunto o tolto sarà vincolante.	30 If, later, either party should decide to make any addition or deletion, they wil be free to do so, and anysuch addition or deletion wil be binding.
31 Riguardo poi ai mali che il re Demetrio compie ai loro danni, gli abbiamo scritto: “Perché aggravi il giogo sui Giudei, nostri amici e alleati?	31 'As regards the wrongs done to them by King Demetrius, we have written to him in these terms: Whyhave you made your yoke lie heavy on our friends and al ies the Jews?
32 Se dunque si appelleranno contro di te, difenderemo i loro diritti e ti faremo guerra per mare e per terra”».	32 If they appeal against you again, we shal uphold their rights and make war on you by sea and land.'
