1 Questi sono i nomi dei figli d’Israele entrati in Egitto; essi vi giunsero insieme a Giacobbe, ognuno con la sua famiglia:	1 These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house:
2 Ruben, Simeone, Levi e Giuda,	2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
3 Ìssacar, Zàbulon e Beniamino,	3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4 Dan e Nèftali, Gad e Aser.	4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 Tutte le persone discendenti da Giacobbe erano settanta. Giuseppe si trovava già in Egitto.	5 Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt.
6 Giuseppe poi morì e così tutti i suoi fratelli e tutta quella generazione.	6 When he had died, along with all of his brothers and all of that generation,
7 I figli d’Israele prolificarono e crebbero, divennero numerosi e molto forti, e il paese ne fu pieno.	7 the sons of Israel increased, and they multiplied like seedlings. And having been strengthened exceedingly, they filled the land.
8 Allora sorse sull’Egitto un nuovo re, che non aveva conosciuto Giuseppe.	8 Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph.
9 Egli disse al suo popolo: «Ecco che il popolo dei figli d’Israele è più numeroso e più forte di noi.	9 And he said to his people: “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many, and they are stronger than we are.
10 Cerchiamo di essere avveduti nei suoi riguardi per impedire che cresca, altrimenti, in caso di guerra, si unirà ai nostri avversari, combatterà contro di noi e poi partirà dal paese».	10 Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply; and if any war should advance against us, they may be added to our enemies, and having fought against us, they might depart from the land.”
11 Perciò vennero imposti loro dei sovrintendenti ai lavori forzati, per opprimerli con le loro angherie, e così costruirono per il faraone le città-deposito, cioè Pitom e Ramses.	11 And so he set over them masters of the works, in order to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharaoh the cities of the tabernacles: Pithom and Raamses.
12 Ma quanto più opprimevano il popolo, tanto più si moltiplicava e cresceva, ed essi furono presi da spavento di fronte agli Israeliti.	12 And the more they oppressed them, so much more did they multiply and increase.
13 Per questo gli Egiziani fecero lavorare i figli d’Israele trattandoli con durezza.	13 And the Egyptians hated the sons of Israel, and they afflicted them and mocked them.
14 Resero loro amara la vita mediante una dura schiavitù, costringendoli a preparare l’argilla e a fabbricare mattoni, e ad ogni sorta di lavoro nei campi; a tutti questi lavori li obbligarono con durezza.	14 And they led their life directly into bitterness, with hard work in clay and brick, and with all kinds of servitude, so that they were being overwhelmed with the works of the land.
15 Il re d’Egitto disse alle levatrici degli Ebrei, delle quali una si chiamava Sifra e l’altra Pua:	15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, (one of whom one was called Shiphrah, another Puah)
16 «Quando assistete le donne ebree durante il parto, osservate bene tra le due pietre: se è un maschio, fatelo morire; se è una femmina, potrà vivere».	16 instructing them: “When you will act as a midwife to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery has arrived: if it is male, put it to death; if it is female, retain it.”
17 Ma le levatrici temettero Dio: non fecero come aveva loro ordinato il re d’Egitto e lasciarono vivere i bambini.	17 But the midwives feared God, and so they did not act according to the precept of the king of Egypt, but they kept the males safe.
18 Il re d’Egitto chiamò le levatrici e disse loro: «Perché avete fatto questo e avete lasciato vivere i bambini?».	18 And summoning them, the king said, “What did you intend to do, so that you would save the boys?”
19 Le levatrici risposero al faraone: «Le donne ebree non sono come le egiziane: sono piene di vitalità. Prima che giunga da loro la levatrice, hanno già partorito!».	19 They responded: “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. For they themselves have the wisdom of a midwife, and so they give birth before we can come to them.”
20 Dio beneficò le levatrici. Il popolo aumentò e divenne molto forte.	20 Therefore, God acted favorably toward the midwives. And the people increased, and they were strengthened exceedingly.
21 E poiché le levatrici avevano temuto Dio, egli diede loro una discendenza.	21 And because the midwives feared God, he built houses for them.
22 Allora il faraone diede quest’ordine a tutto il suo popolo: «Gettate nel Nilo ogni figlio maschio che nascerà, ma lasciate vivere ogni femmina».	22 Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”
