1 Cessata l’agitazione della gente radunata attorno al consiglio militare, parlò Oloferne, comandante supremo dell’esercito di Assur, rivolgendosi ad Achiòr, alla presenza di tutta quella folla di stranieri, e a tutti i Moabiti:	1 When the uproar of those crowding round the council had subsided, Holofernes, general-in-chief of theAssyrian army, reprimanded Achior in front of the whole crowd of foreigners and Ammonites.
2 «Chi sei tu, o Achiòr, e voi, mercenari di Èfraim, per profetare in mezzo a noi come hai fatto oggi e suggerire di non combattere il popolo d’Israele, perché il loro Dio li proteggerà dall’alto? E chi è dio se non Nabucodònosor? Questi manderà il suo esercito e li sterminerà dalla faccia della terra, né il loro Dio potrà liberarli.	2 'Achior, who do you think you are, you and the Ephraimite mercenaries, playing the prophet like this withus today, and trying to dissuade us from making war on the people of Israel? You claim their God wil protectthem. And who is God if not Nebuchadnezzar? He himself wil display his power and wipe them off the face ofthe earth, and their God wil certainly not save them.
3 Saremo noi suoi servi a spazzarli via come un sol uomo, perché non potranno sostenere l’impeto dei nostri cavalli.	3 But we, his servants, shal destroy them as easily as a single individual. They can never resist thestrength of our cavalry.
4 Li bruceremo in casa loro, i loro monti si inebrieranno del loro sangue, i loro campi si colmeranno dei loro cadaveri, né potrà resistere la pianta dei loro piedi davanti a noi, ma saranno completamente distrutti. Questo dice Nabucodònosor, il signore di tutta la terra: così ha parlato e le sue parole non potranno essere smentite.	4 We shal burn them all. Their mountains will be drunk with their blood and their plains filled with theircorpses. Far from being able to resist us, every one of them wil die; thus says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of thewhole world. For he has spoken, and his words will not prove empty.
5 Quanto a te, Achiòr, mercenario di Ammon, che hai pronunciato queste parole nel giorno della tua sventura, non vedrai più la mia faccia, da oggi fino a quando farò vendetta di questa razza che viene dall’Egitto.	5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, who in a rash moment said these words, you wil not seemy face again until the day when I have taken my revenge on this brood from Egypt.
6 Allora il ferro dei miei soldati e la numerosa schiera dei miei ministri trapasserà i tuoi fianchi, e tu cadrai fra i loro cadaveri quando io tornerò a vederti.	6 And then the swords of my soldiers and the spears of my officers wil pierce your sides. You wil falamong their wounded, the moment I turn on Israel.
7 I miei servi ora ti esporranno sulla montagna e ti lasceranno in una delle città delle alture;	7 My servants wil now take you into the hill-country and leave you near one of the towns in the passes;
8 non morirai finché non sarai sterminato con quella gente.	8 you wil not die, until you share their ruin.
9 Ma se in cuor tuo speri davvero che costoro non saranno catturati, non c’è bisogno che il tuo aspetto sia così depresso. Ho parlato: nessuna mia parola andrà a vuoto».	9 No need to look so sad if you cherish the secret hope that they wil not be captured! I have spoken; noneof my words will prove idle.'
10 Allora Oloferne diede ordine ai suoi servi, che erano di turno nella sua tenda, di prendere Achiòr, di condurlo vicino a Betùlia e di abbandonarlo nelle mani degli Israeliti.	10 Holofernes having commanded his tent-orderlies to seize Achior, to take him to Bethulia and to handhim over to the Israelites,
11 I suoi servi lo presero e lo condussero fuori dell’accampamento verso la pianura, poi dalla pianura lo spinsero verso la montagna e arrivarono alle fonti che erano sotto Betùlia.	11 the orderlies took him, escorted him out of the camp and across the plain, and then, making for the hil -country, reached the springs below Bethulia.
12 Quando gli uomini della città li scorsero sulla cresta del monte, presero le armi e uscirono dalla città dirigendosi verso la cima del monte. Tutti i frombolieri occuparono la via di accesso e si misero a lanciare pietre su di loro.	12 As soon as the men of the town sighted them, they snatched up their weapons, left the town and madefor the mountain tops, while al the slingers pelted them with stones to prevent them from coming up.
13 Ridiscesi al riparo del monte, legarono Achiòr e lo abbandonarono, gettandolo a terra alle falde del monte; quindi fecero ritorno dal loro signore.	13 However, they managed to take cover at the foot of the slope, where they bound Achior and left himlying at the bottom of the mountain and returned to their master.
14 Scesi dalla loro città, gli Israeliti si avvicinarono a lui, lo slegarono, lo condussero a Betùlia e lo presentarono ai capi della loro città,	14 The Israelites then came down from their town, stopped by him, unbound him and took him to Bethulia,where they brought him before the chief men of the town,
15 che in quel tempo erano Ozia, figlio di Mica, della tribù di Simeone, Cabrì, figlio di Gotonièl, e Carmì, figlio di Melchièl.	15 who at that time were Uzziah son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris son of Gothoniel andCharmis son of Melchiel.
16 Radunarono subito tutti gli anziani della città, e tutti i giovani e le donne accorsero al luogo del raduno. Posero Achiòr in mezzo a tutto il popolo e Ozia lo interrogò sull’accaduto.	16 These summoned al the elders of the town. The young men and the women also hurried to theassembly. Achior was made to stand with al the people surrounding him, and Uzziah questioned him about whathad happened.
17 In risposta riferì loro le parole del consiglio militare di Oloferne, tutto il discorso che Oloferne aveva pronunciato in mezzo ai capi degli Assiri e quello che con arroganza aveva detto contro la casa d’Israele.	17 He answered by tel ing them what had been said at Holofernes' council, and what he himself had saidin the presence of the Assyrian leaders, and how Holofernes had bragged of what he would do to the House ofIsrael.
18 Allora tutto il popolo si prostrò ad adorare Dio e alzò questa supplica:	18 At this the people fel to the ground and worshipped God.
19 «Signore, Dio del cielo, guarda la loro superbia, abbi pietà dell’umiliazione della nostra stirpe e guarda benigno in questo giorno il volto di coloro che sono consacrati a te».	19 'Lord God of heaven,' they cried, 'take notice of their arrogance and have pity on the humiliation of ourrace. Look kindly today on those who are consecrated to you.'
20 Poi confortarono Achiòr e gli rivolsero parole di grande lode.	20 They then spoke reassuringly to Achior and praised him warmly.
21 Ozia, da parte sua, dopo il raduno lo accolse nella sua casa e offrì un banchetto a tutti gli anziani, e per tutta quella notte invocarono l’aiuto del Dio d’Israele.	21 After the assembly Uzziah took him home and gave a banquet for the elders; al that night they cal edon the God of Israel for help.
