16 e ricondurrà molti figli d'Israele al Signore loro Dio.	16 and he wil bring back many of the Israelites to the Lord their God.
17 Gli camminerà innanzi con lo spirito e la forza di Elia, 'per ricondurre i cuori dei padri verso i figli' e i ribelli alla saggezza dei giusti e preparare al Signore un popolo ben disposto".	17 With the spirit and power of Elijah, he wil go before him to reconcile fathers to their children and thedisobedient to the good sense of the upright, preparing for the Lord a people fit for him.'
18 Zaccaria disse all'angelo: "Come posso conoscere questo? Io sono vecchio e mia moglie è avanzata negli anni".	18 Zechariah said to the angel, 'How can I know this? I am an old man and my wife is getting on in years.'
19 L'angelo gli rispose: "Io sono Gabriele che sto al cospetto di Dio e sono stato mandato a portarti questo lieto annunzio.	19 The angel replied, 'I am Gabriel, who stand in God's presence, and I have been sent to speak to youand bring you this good news.
20 Ed ecco, sarai muto e non potrai parlare fino al giorno in cui queste cose avverranno, perché non hai creduto alle mie parole, le quali si adempiranno a loro tempo".	20 Look! Since you did not believe my words, which wil come true at their appointed time, you will besilenced and have no power of speech until this has happened.'
21 Intanto il popolo stava in attesa di Zaccaria, e si meravigliava per il suo indugiare nel tempio.	21 Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah and were surprised that he stayed in the sanctuaryso long.
22 Quando poi uscì e non poteva parlare loro, capirono che nel tempio aveva avuto una visione. Faceva loro dei cenni e restava muto.	22 When he came out he could not speak to them, and they realised that he had seen a vision in thesanctuary. But he could only make signs to them and remained dumb.
23 Compiuti i giorni del suo servizio, tornò a casa.	23 When his time of service came to an end he returned home.
24 Dopo quei giorni Elisabetta, sua moglie, concepì e si tenne nascosta per cinque mesi e diceva:	24 Some time later his wife Elizabeth conceived and for five months she kept to herself, saying,
25 "Ecco che cosa ha fatto per me il Signore, nei giorni in cui si è degnato di togliere la mia vergogna tra gli uomini".	25 'The Lord has done this for me, now that it has pleased him to take away the humiliation I suffered inpublic.'
26 Nel sesto mese, l'angelo Gabriele fu mandato da Dio in una città della Galilea, chiamata Nàzaret,	26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee cal ed Nazareth,
27 a una vergine, promessa sposa di un uomo della casa di Davide, chiamato Giuseppe. La vergine si chiamava Maria.	27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 Entrando da lei, disse: "Ti saluto, o piena di grazia, il Signore è con te".	28 He went in and said to her, 'Rejoice, you who enjoy God's favour! The Lord is with you.'

32 Sarà grande e chiamato Figlio dell'Altissimo; il Signore Dio gli darà il trono di Davide suo padre	32 He will be great and wil be cal ed Son of the Most High. The Lord God wil give him the throne of hisancestor David;
33 e regnerà per sempre sulla casa di Giacobbe e il suo regno non avrà fine".	33 he wil rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign wil have no end.'
34 Allora Maria disse all'angelo: "Come è possibile? Non conosco uomo".	34 Mary said to the angel, 'But how can this come about, since I have no knowledge of man?'
35 Le rispose l'angelo: "Lo Spirito Santo scenderà su di te, su te stenderà la sua ombra la potenza dell'Altissimo. 39 In quei giorni Maria si mise in viaggio verso la montagna e raggiunse in fretta una città di Giuda.	39 Mary set out at that time and went as quickly as she could into the hil country to a town in Judah.
40 Entrata nella casa di Zaccaria, salutò Elisabetta.	40 She went into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth.
41 Appena Elisabetta ebbe udito il saluto di Maria, il bambino le sussultò nel grembo. Elisabetta fu piena di Spirito Santo	41 Now it happened that as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leapt in her womb andElizabeth was fil ed with the Holy Spirit.
42 ed esclamò a gran voce: "Benedetta tu fra le donne e benedetto il frutto del tuo grembo!	42 She gave a loud cry and said, 'Of al women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of yourwomb.

44 Ecco, appena la voce del tuo saluto è giunta ai miei orecchi, il bambino ha esultato di gioia nel mio grembo.	44 Look, the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy.
45 E beata colei che ha creduto nell'adempimento delle parole del Signore".	45 Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.'
46 Allora Maria disse: "'L'anima mia' magnifica 'il Signore'	46 And Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
47 e il mio spirito 'esulta in Dio, mio salvatore,'	47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;

59 All'ottavo giorno vennero per circoncidere il bambino e volevano chiamarlo col nome di suo padre, Zaccaria.	59 Now it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; they were going to call himZechariah after his father,
60 Ma sua madre intervenne: "No, si chiamerà Giovanni".	60 but his mother spoke up. 'No,' she said, 'he is to be called John.'
61 Le dissero: "Non c'è nessuno della tua parentela che si chiami con questo nome".	61 They said to her, 'But no one in your family has that name,'

63 Egli chiese una tavoletta, e scrisse: "Giovanni è il suo nome". Tutti furono meravigliati.	63 The father asked for a writing-tablet and wrote, 'His name is John.' And they were al astonished.
64 In quel medesimo istante gli si aprì la bocca e gli si sciolse la lingua, e parlava benedicendo Dio.	64 At that instant his power of speech returned and he spoke and praised God.
65 Tutti i loro vicini furono presi da timore, e per tutta la regione montuosa della Giudea si discorreva di tutte queste cose.	65 Al their neighbours were filled with awe and the whole affair was talked about throughout the hilcountry of Judaea.
66 Coloro che le udivano, le serbavano in cuor loro: "Che sarà mai questo bambino?" si dicevano. Davvero la mano del Signore stava con lui.	66 Al those who heard of it treasured it in their hearts. 'What will this child turn out to be?' they wondered.And indeed the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 Zaccaria, suo padre, fu pieno di Spirito Santo, e profetò dicendo:	67 His father Zechariah was fil ed with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy:
68 "'Benedetto il Signore Dio d'Israele,' perché ha visitato e redento il suo popolo,	68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited his people, he has set them free,
69 e ha suscitato per noi una salvezza potente nella casa di Davide, suo servo,	69 and he has established for us a saving power in the House of his servant David,
70 come aveva promesso per bocca dei suoi santi profeti d'un tempo:	70 just as he proclaimed, by the mouth of his holy prophets from ancient times,
71 salvezza 'dai' nostri 'nemici,' 'e dalle mani di quanti ci odiano.'	71 that he would save us from our enemies and from the hands of al those who hate us,

78 grazie alla bontà misericordiosa del nostro Dio, per cui verrà a visitarci dall'alto un sole che sorge	78 because of the faithful love of our God in which the rising Sun has come from on high to visit us,
79 'per rischiarare quelli che stanno nelle tenebre' 'e nell'ombra della morte' e dirigere i nostri passi sulla via della pace".	79 to give light to those who live in darkness and the shadow dark as death, and to guide our feet into theway of peace.
80 Il fanciullo cresceva e si fortificava nello spirito. Visse in regioni deserte fino al giorno della sua manifestazione a Israele.	80 Meanwhile the child grew up and his spirit grew strong. And he lived in the desert until the day heappeared openly to Israel.
