Siracide 48

BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Allora sorse Elia profeta, simile al fuoco; la sua parola bruciava come fiaccola.	1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.
2 Egli fece venire su di loro la carestia e con zelo li ridusse a pochi.	2 It was he who brought famine on them and decimated them in his zeal.
3 Per comando del Signore chiuse il cielo, fece scendere così tre volte il fuoco.	3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens, three times also he brought down fire.
4 Come ti rendesti famoso, Elia, con i prodigi! E chi può vantarsi di esserti uguale?	4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have? -
5 Risvegliasti un defunto dalla morte e dagli inferi, per comando dell'Altissimo;	5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol, by the word of the Most High;
6 tu che spingesti re alla rovina, uomini gloriosi dal loro letto.	6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;
7 Sentisti sul Sinai rimproveri, sull'Oreb sentenze di vendetta.	7 hearing a rebuke on Sinai and decrees of punishment on Horeb;
8 Ungesti re come vindici e profeti come tuoi successori.	8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;
9 Fosti assunto in un turbine di fuoco su un carro di cavalli di fuoco,	9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;
10 designato a rimproverare i tempi futuri per placare l'ira prima che divampi, per ricondurre il cuore dei padri verso i figli e ristabilire le tribù di Giacobbe.	10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God's wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts offathers towards their children, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.
11 Beati coloro che ti videro e che si sono addormentati nell'amore! Perché anche noi vivremo certamente.	11 Blessed, those who wil see you, and those who have fal en asleep in love; for we too shal certainlyhave life.
12 Appena Elia fu avvolto dal turbine, Eliseo fu pieno del suo spirito; durante la sua vita non tremò davanti ai potenti e nessuno riuscì a dominarlo.	12 Such was Elijah, who was enveloped in a whirlwind; and Elisha was fil ed with his spirit; throughout hislife no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.
13 Nulla fu troppo grande per lui; nel sepolcro il suo corpo profetizzò. Nella sua vita compì prodigi e dopo la morte meravigliose furono le sue opere.	13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.
	14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvel ous.
15 Con tutto ciò il popolo non si convertì e non rinnegò i suoi peccati, finché non fu deportato dal proprio paese e disperso su tutta la terra.	15 Despite al this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, until they were herded out oftheir country and scattered al over the earth;
16 Rimase soltanto un popolo poco numeroso con un principe della casa di Davide. Alcuni di costoro fecero ciò che è gradito a Dio, ma altri moltiplicarono i peccati.	16 only a few of the people were left, with a ruler of the House of David. Some of them did what pleasedthe Lord, others piled sin on sin.
17 Ezechia fortificò la sua città e condusse l'acqua nel suo interno; scavò con il ferro un canale nella roccia e costruì cisterne per l'acqua.	17 Hezekiah fortified his city, and laid on a water-supply inside it; with iron he tunnelled through the rockand constructed storage-tanks.
18 Nei suoi giorni Sennàcherib fece una spedizione e mandò il gran coppiere; egli alzò la mano contro Sion e si vantò spavaldamente con superbia.	18 In his days Sennacherib invaded and sent Rabshakeh; he lifted his hand against Zion, and boastedloudly in his arrogance.
19 Allora si agitarono loro il cuore e le mani, soffrirono come le partorienti.	19 Then their hearts and hands trembled, they felt the pangs of a woman in labour,
20 Invocarono il Signore misericordioso, stendendo le mani verso di lui. Il Santo li ascoltò subito dal cielo e li liberò per mezzo di Isaia.	20 but they cal ed on the merciful Lord, stretching out their hands towards him. Swiftly the Holy Oneheard them from heaven and delivered them by the agency of Isaiah;
21 Egli colpì l'accampamento degli Assiri, e il suo angelo li sterminò,	21 he struck the camp of the Assyrians and his Angel annihilated them.
22 perché Ezechia aveva fatto quanto è gradito al Signore, e seguito con fermezza le vie di Davide suo antenato, come gli additava il profeta Isaia, grande e verace nella visione.	22 For Hezekiah did what is pleasing to the Lord, and was steadfast in the ways of David his father,enjoined on him by the prophet Isaiah, a great man trustworthy in his vision.
23 Nei suoi giorni retrocedette il sole, egli prolungò la vita del re.	23 In his days the sun moved back; he prolonged the life of the king.
24 Con grande ispirazione vide gli ultimi tempi, e consolò gli afflitti di Sion.	24 In the power of the spirit he saw the last things, he comforted the mourners of Zion,
25 Egli manifestò il futuro sino alla fine dei tempi, le cose nascoste prima che avvenissero.	25 he revealed the future to the end of time, and hidden things long before they happened.
