1 Onora il medico come si deve secondo il bisogno, anch'egli è stato creato dal Signore.	1 Hold the physician in honor, for he is essential to you, and God it was who established his profession.
2 Dall'Altissimo viene la guarigione, anche dal re egli riceve doni.	2 From God the doctor has his wisdom, and the king provides for his sustenance.
3 La scienza del medico lo fa procedere a testa alta, egli è ammirato anche tra i grandi.	3 His knowledge makes the doctor distinguished, and gives him access to those in authority.
4 Il Signore ha creato medicamenti dalla terra, l'uomo assennato non li disprezza.	4 God makes the earth yield healing herbs which the prudent man should not neglect;
5 L'acqua non fu forse resa dolce per mezzo di un legno, per rendere evidente la potenza di lui?	5 Was not the water sweetened by a twig that men might learn his power?
6 Dio ha dato agli uomini la scienza perché potessero gloriarsi delle sue meraviglie.	6 He endows men with the knowledge to glory in his mighty works,
7 Con esse il medico cura ed elimina il dolore e il farmacista prepara le miscele.	7 Through which the doctor eases pain and the druggist prepares his medicines;
8 Non verranno meno le sue opere! Da lui proviene il benessere sulla terra.	8 Thus God's creative work continues without cease in its efficacy on the surface of the earth.
9 Figlio, non avvilirti nella malattia, ma prega il Signore ed egli ti guarirà.	9 My son, when you are ill, delay not, but pray to God, who will heal you:
10 Purìficati, lavati le mani; monda il cuore da ogni peccato.	10 Flee wickedness; let your hands be just, cleanse your heart of every sin;
11 Offri incenso e un memoriale di fior di farina e sacrifici pingui secondo le tue possibilità.	11 Offer your sweet-smelling oblation and petition, a rich offering according to your means.
12 Fa' poi passare il medico - il Signore ha creato anche lui - non stia lontano da te, poiché ne hai bisogno.	12 Then give the doctor his place lest he leave; for you need him too.
13 Ci sono casi in cui il successo è nelle loro mani.	13 There are times that give him an advantage,
14 Anch'essi pregano il Signore perché li guidi felicemente ad alleviare la malattia e a risanarla, perché il malato ritorni alla vita.	14 and he too beseeches God That his diagnosis may be correct and his treatment bring about a cure.
15 Chi pecca contro il proprio creatore cada nelle mani del medico.	15 He who is a sinner toward his Maker will be defiant toward the doctor.
16 Figlio, versa lacrime sul morto, e come uno che soffre crudelmente inizia il lamento; poi seppelliscine il corpo secondo il suo rito e non trascurare la sua tomba.	16 My son, shed tears for one who is dead with wailing and bitter lament; As is only proper, prepare the body, absent not yourself from his burial:
17 Piangi amaramente e alza il tuo lamento, il lutto sia proporzionato alla sua dignità, un giorno o due, per prevenire le dicerie, quindi consòlati del tuo dolore.	17 Weeping bitterly, mourning fully, pay your tribute of sorrow, as he deserves,
18 Difatti il dolore precede la morte, il dolore del cuore logora la forza.	18 One or two days, to prevent gossip; then compose yourself after your grief,

21 Non dimenticare: non ci sarà infatti ritorno; al morto non gioverai e farai del male a te stesso.	21 Recall him not, for there is no hope of his return; it will not help him, but will do you harm.
22 Ricòrdati della mia sorte che sarà anche la tua: "Ieri a me e oggi a te".	22 Remember that his fate will also be yours; for him it was yesterday, for you today.
23 Nel riposo del morto lascia riposare anche il suo ricordo; consòlati di lui, ora che il suo spirito è partito.	23 With the departed dead, let memory fade; rally your courage, once the soul has left.
24 La sapienza dello scriba si deve alle sue ore di quiete; chi ha poca attività diventerà saggio.	24 The scribe's profession increases his wisdom; whoever is free from toil can become a wise man.
25 Come potrà divenir saggio chi maneggia l'aratro e si vanta di brandire un pungolo? Spinge innanzi i buoi e si occupa del loro lavoro e parla solo di vitelli?	25 How can he become learned who guides the plow, who thrills in wielding the goad like a lance, Who guides the ox and urges on the bullock, and whose every concern is for cattle?
26 Pone la sua mente a tracciare solchi, non dorme per dare il foraggio alle giovenche.	26 His care is for plowing furrows, and he keeps a watch on the beasts in the stalls.
27 Così ogni artigiano e ogni artista che passa la notte come il giorno: quelli che incidono incisioni per sigilli e con pazienza cercano di variare l'intaglio; pongono mente a ritrarre bene il disegno e stanno svegli per terminare il lavoro.	27 So with every engraver and designer who, laboring night and day, Fashions carved seals, and whose concern is to vary the pattern. His care is to produce a vivid impression, and he keeps watch till he finishes his design.
28 Così il fabbro siede davanti all'incudine ed è intento ai lavori del ferro: la vampa del fuoco gli strugge le carni, e col calore del fornello deve lottare; il rumore del martello gli assorda gli orecchi, i suoi occhi sono fissi al modello dell'oggetto, è tutto preoccupato per finire il suo lavoro, sta sveglio per rifinirlo alla perfezione.	28 So with the smith standing near his anvil, forging crude iron. The heat from the fire sears his flesh, yet he toils away in the furnace heat. The clang of the hammer deafens his ears, His eyes are fixed on the tool he is shaping. His care is to finish his work, and he keeps watch till he perfects it in detail.
29 Così il vasaio seduto al suo lavoro gira con i piedi la ruota, è sempre in ansia per il suo lavoro; tutti i suoi gesti sono calcolati.	29 So with the potter sitting at his labor, revolving the wheel with his feet. He is always concerned for his products, and turns them out in quantity.
30 Con il braccio imprime una forma all'argilla, mentre con i piedi ne piega la resistenza; è preoccupato per una verniciatura perfetta, sta sveglio per pulire il fornello.	30 With his hands he molds the clay, and with his feet softens it. His care is for proper coloring, and he keeps watch on the fire of his kiln.
31 Tutti costoro hanno fiducia nelle proprie mani; ognuno è esperto nel proprio mestiere.	31 All these men are skilled with their hands, each one an expert at his own task;
32 Senza di loro sarebbe impossibile costruire una città; gli uomini non potrebbero né abitarvi né circolare.	32 Without them no city could be lived in, and wherever they stay, they need not hunger.
33 Ma essi non sono ricercati nel consiglio del popolo, nell'assemblea non hanno un posto speciale, non siedono sul seggio del giudice, non conoscono le disposizioni del giudizio.	33 They do not occupy the judge's bench, nor are they prominent in the assembly; They set forth no decisions or judgments, nor are they found among the rulers;
34 Non fanno brillare né l'istruzione né il diritto, non compaiono tra gli autori di proverbi; ma sostengono le cose materiali, e la loro preghiera riguarda i lavori del mestiere.	34 Yet they maintain God's ancient handiwork, and their concern is for exercise of their skill.
