| 1 Giosuè, figlio di Nun, mandò segretamente da Shittim due uomini, esploratori, con questa consegna: «Andate a esplorare il paese e Gerico ». Essi andarono e, giunti a Gerico, entrarono nella casa di una prostituta chiamata Rakhab e vi presero alloggio. | 1 Then Joshua, son of Nun, secretly sent out two spies from Shittim, saying, "Go, reconnoiter the land and Jericho." When the two reached Jericho, they went into the house of a harlot named Rahab, where they lodged. |
| 2 La cosa fu riferita al re di Gerico: « Ecco, alcuni uomini tra i figli di Israele sono giunti qui, per questa notte, a esplorare il paese ». | 2 But a report was brought to the king of Jericho that some Israelites had come there that night to spy out the land. |
| 3 Allora il re di Gerico mandò a dire a Rakhab: « Fa’ uscire gli uomini che sono venuti da te e che sono entrati nella tua casa, perchè sono venuti per esplorare tutto il paese». | 3 So the king of Jericho sent Rahab the order, "Put out the visitors who have entered your house, for they have come to spy out the entire land." |
| 4 Ma la donna prese i due uomini, li nascose e disse: « Sì, quegli uomini sono venuti da me, ma io non sapevo donde fossero | 4 The woman had taken the two men and hidden them, so she said, "True, the men you speak of came to me, but I did not know where they came from. |
| 5 e, quando la porta della città stava per essere chiusa, all’imbrunire, essi sono partiti e non so dove siano andati. Inseguiteli in fretta e, certo, li raggiungerete ». | 5 At dark, when it was time for the gate to be shut, they left, and I do not know where they went. You will have to pursue them immediately to overtake them." |
| 6 Ora essa li aveva fatti salire sulla terrazza e li aveva nascosti fra gli steli di lino che aveva ammucchiato sulla terrazza. | 6 Now, she had led them to the roof, and hidden them among her stalks of flax spread out there. |
| 7 Gli altri intanto li inseguirono in direzione del Giordano, verso i guadi; la porta venne chiusa dopo che furono usciti gli inseguitori. | 7 But the pursuers set out along the way to the fords of the Jordan, and once they had left, the gate was shut. |
| 8 Gli esploratori non si erano ancora coricati quando la donna salì da loro sulla teriazza | 8 Before the spies fell asleep, Rahab came to them on the roof |
| 9 è parlò loro: «Io so che Jahve vi ha concesso questo paese, perchè ci ha invaso il terrore di voi e’ ogni abitante della regione innanzi a voi è stato preso da panico, | 9 and said: "I know that the LORD has given you the land, that a dread of you has come upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of you. |
| 10 poichè abbiamo appreso come Jahve ha asciugato le acque del Mare dei Giunchi innanzi a voi, quando uscivate dall’Egitto, e come voi avete trattato, al di là del Giordano, i due re degli Amorrei, Sikhon e Og, che avete votato all’anatema. | 10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and how you dealt with Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, whom you doomed to destruction. |
| 11 Noi abbiamo saputo e il nostro cuore è venuto meno; nessuno ha più fiato innanzi a voi perchè Jahve vostro Dio è Dio in alto, in cielo, e sotto, sulla terra. | 11 At these reports, we are disheartened; everyone is discouraged because of you, since the LORD, your God, is God in heaven above and on earth below. |
| 12 Ora dunque, giuratemi per Jahve, che, come io vi ho trattato con bontà, così anche voi tratterete con benevolenza la mia casa e datemi un segno certo | 12 Now then, swear to me by the LORD that, since I am showing kindness to you, you in turn will show kindness to my family; and give me an unmistakable token |
| 13 che lascerete in vita mio padre, mia madre, i miei fratelli, le mie sorelle, tutto ciò che appartiene a loro e che ci risparmierete dalla morte ». | 13 that you are to spare my father and mother, brothers and sisters, and all their kin, and save us from death." |
| 14 Allora gli uomini risposero: « Ne vada per voi la nostra vita, purchè non manifestiate questo nostro affare! Quando Jahve darà a noi questa regione, noi useremo con te benevolenza e lealtà ». | 14 "We pledge our lives for yours," the men answered her. "If you do not betray this errand of ours, we will be faithful in showing kindness to you when the LORD gives us the land." |
| 15 Allora essa, poichè aveva la casa addossata alle mura e l’abitazione sulle mura, li calò con una corda dalla finestra | 15 Then she let them down through the window with a rope; for she lived in a house built into the city wall. |
| 16 e disse loro: « Andate verso la montagna, perchè non vi incontrino coloro che vi inseguono, e state nascosti là per tre giorni, finchè non siano ritornati gli inseguitori; poi ve ne andrete per il vostro cammino ». | 16 "Go up into the hill country," she suggested to them, "that your pursuers may not find you. Hide there for three days, until they return; then you may proceed on your way." |
| 17 Gli uomini replicarono: « Noi saremo sciolti da questo giuramento che ci hai fatto prestare a queste condizioni: | 17 The men answered her, "This is how we will fulfill the oath you made us take: |
| 18 ecco, quando noi entreremo in paese, tu legherai questa corda di filo scarlatto alla finestra dalla quale ci hai fatto discendere e radunerai tuo padre, tua madre, i tuoi fratelli e tutta la tua famiglia presso di te in casa. | 18 When we come into the land, tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you are letting us down; and gather your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. |
| 19 Il sangue di chiunque metterà piede fuori della tua casa ricadrà sul suo capo: noi ne saremo innocenti; ma il sangue di chiunque si troverà con te in casa ricadrà sul nostro capo, se mai sarà toccato. | 19 Should any of them pass outside the doors of your house, he will be responsible for his own death, and we shall be guiltless. But we shall be responsible if anyone in the house with you is harmed. |
| 20 Se paleserai questo nostro affare, saremo sciolti dal giuramento che ci hai fatto prestare». | 20 If, however, you betray this errand of ours, we shall be quit of the oath you have made us take." |
| 21 Essa rispose: «Sia come dite ». Poi si accomiatò da loro ed essi se ne andarono. Allora essa appese alla finestra la cordicella di filo scarlatto. | 21 "Let it be as you say," she replied, and bade them farewell. When they were gone, she tied the scarlet cord in the window. |
| 22 Essi se ne andarono e si diressero verso la montagna dove rimasero tre giorni, finchè non ebbero fatto ritorno gli inseguitori che li avevano cercati dappertutto senza trovarli. | 22 They went up into the hills, where they stayed three days until their pursuers, who had sought them all along the road without finding them, returned. |
| 23 Allora i due uomini, prendendo la via del ritorno, scesero dal monte, attraversarono il Giordano, si presentarono a Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e gli riferirono quanto era loro successo. | 23 Then the two came back down from the hills, crossed the Jordan to Joshua, son of Nun, and reported all that had befallen them. |
| 24 Così conclusero il rapporto a Giosuè: « Jahve certamente ha messo tutto questo paese in nostro potere e tutti i suoi abitanti già tremano innanzi a noi ». | 24 They assured Joshua, "The LORD has delivered all this land into our power; indeed, all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of us." |
