Prima lettera ai Corinzi 10

1 Sì, perché voglio che lo sappiate bene, o fratelli: i nostri padri furono tutti sotto la nube e tutti attraversarono il mare,	1 I want you to know, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,
2 e così tutti nella nube e nel mare furono battezzati in Mosè,	2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,
3 e tutti mangiarono lo stesso cibo spirituale,	3 and all ate the same supernatural food
4 e tutti bevvero la medesima bevanda spirituale; bevevano infatti ad una roccia spirituale, che li accompagnava, e quella roccia era il Cristo.	4 and all drank the same supernatural drink. For they drank from the supernatural Rock which followed them, and the Rock was Christ.
5 Tuttavia, nella maggior parte di essi Iddio non si compiacque. Infatti furono abbattuti nel deserto.	5 Nevertheless with most of them God was not pleased; for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
6 Ora, questi fatti accaddero per essere immagine della nostra vita, affinché non nutriamo le brame malvagie a cui quelli cedettero.	6 Now these things are warnings for us, not to desire evil as they did.
7 Non siate idolatri, come alcuni di essi, di cui sta scritto: Il popolo sedette per mangiare e bere, poi si alzò per darsi ai divertimenti.	7 Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to dance."
8 Non abbandoniamoci all’impudicizia, come fecero alcuni di essi, così che ne caddero morti ventitremila in un solo giorno.	8 We must not indulge in immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day.
9 Non provochiamo il Signore, come lo provocarono alcuni tra loro, e perirono per il morso dei serpenti.	9 We must not put the Lord to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents;
10 Non mormorate, come mormorarono alcuni di essi, e perirono per opera dello sterminatore.	10 nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.
11 Tutto questo che accadeva ad essi aveva un valore di tipo, e fu scritto perché fosse di ammonimento a noi, cui è toccato di vivere alla fine dei tempi.	11 Now these things happened to them as a warning, but they were written down for our instruction, upon whom the end of the ages has come.
12 Pertanto, chi crede di stare in piedi stia attento a non cadere.	12 Therefore let any one who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
13 Nessuna prova vi ha sorpreso che non fosse ordinaria. E Dio è fedele, così che non permetterà che siate tentati al di sopra delle vostre forze, ma al tempo stesso della tentazione vi assicurerà anche il successo, sì da poterla tollerare.	13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
14 Perciò, o miei cari, fuggite il culto degli idoli.	14 Therefore, my beloved, shun the worship of idols.
15 Parlo a voi come a gente assennata; giudicate voi stessi quanto dico.	15 I speak as to sensible men; judge for yourselves what I say.
16 Il calice di benedizione, che noi benediciamo, non è forse una comunione col sangue di Cristo? Il pane che spezziamo non è forse una comunione col corpo di Cristo?	16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
17 Dal momento che vi è un solo pane, noi, che siamo molti, formiamo un solo corpo; poiché noi tutti siamo partecipi di questo unico pane.	17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.
18 Guardate l’Israele terrestre! Non sono forse in comunione con l’altare, quelli che mangiano le vittime?	18 Consider the people of Israel; are not those who eat the sacrifices partners in the altar?
19 Che intendo dunque dire? Che la carne immolata agli idoli abbia un qualche valore? ovvero che un idolo sia qualche cosa?	19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?
20 No, ma che quanto sacrificano i pagani, lo sacrificano ai demoni e non a Dio. Ora, non voglio che voi siate in comunione con i demoni.	20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be partners with demons.
21 Non potete bere alla coppa del Signore e alla coppa dei demoni; non potete prendere parte alla mensa del Signore e alla mensa dei demoni.	21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.
22 Oppure, vorremmo noi provocare ad ira il Signore? Siamo forse più potenti di lui?	22 Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
23 «Tutto è permesso!», ma non tutto è conveniente. «Tutto è permesso!», ma non tutto edifica.	23 "All things are lawful," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up.
24 Nessuno cerchi il suo proprio vantaggio, ma quello altrui.	24 Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.
25 Mangiate pure tutto quanto si vende sul mercato, senza indagare per scrupolo di coscienza,	25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience.
26 poiché al Signore appartiene la terra e tutto ciò che essa contiene.	26 For "the earth is the Lords, and everything in it."
27 Se un infedele vi invita e volete andarvi, mangiate pure tutto ciò che vi si servirà, senza fare ricerche per scrupolo di coscienza.	27 If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience.
28 Se invece uno vi dicesse: «Questa è carne sacrificata», non mangiatene, a motivo di colui che vi ha avvertito e della coscienza.	28 (But if some one says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then out of consideration for the man who informed you, and for conscience' sake--
29 Non parlo però della tua coscienza, ma della coscienza altrui. A che scopo infatti esporre la mia libertà al giudizio della coscienza di un altro?	29 I mean his conscience, not yours--do not eat it.) For why should my liberty be determined by another man's scruples?
30 Se io prendo parte al cibo rendendo grazie a Dio, perché farmi vituperare per quello di cui rendo grazie?	30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?
31 Pertanto, sia che mangiate, sia che beviate o che facciate qualunque altra cosa, fate tutto a gloria di Dio.	31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
32 Non siate provocatori di scandalo né ai Giudei, né ai Greci, né alla Chiesa di Dio.	32 Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God,
33 È così che mi studio anch’io di essere compiacente verso tutti in ogni cosa, non cercando il mio utile personale, ma quello della moltitudine, affinché ottengano la salvezza.	33 just as I try to please all men in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.
