| 1 Quando siedi a mensa con un signore, fa’ ben attenzione a ciò che ti sta davanti: | 1 When you sit down to eat with a ruler, observe carefully what is before you; |
| 2 metti un coltello alla gola, se hai troppo appetito. | 2 and put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite. |
| 3 Non cercare le sue ghiottonerie, perché sono un cibo che inganna. | 3 Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food. |
| 4 Non affannarti per la ricchezza, smettila di pensarci; | 4 Do not toil to acquire wealth; be wise enough to desist. |
| 5 appena la guardi già non c’è più, perché mette le ali come l’aquila e vola nei cieli. | 5 When your eyes light upon it, it is gone; for suddenly it takes to itself wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven. |
| 6 Non mangiare il pane dell’uomo sordido e non cercare le sue ghiottonerie; | 6 Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy; do not desire his delicacies; |
| 7 perché, da buon calcolatore, ti dirà: «Mangia e bevi», ma il suo cuore non è con te. | 7 for he is like one who is inwardly reckoning. "Eat and drink!" he says to you; but his heart is not with you. |
| 8 Dovrai rigettare il boccone mangiato e avrai buttato via i tuoi bei discorsi. | 8 You will vomit up the morsels which you have eaten, and waste your pleasant words. |
| 9 Non parlare all’orecchio dello stolto, perché egli disprezzerà la saggezza dei tuoi ragionamenti. | 9 Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words. |
| 10 Non spostare i confini antichi e non invadere il campo degli orfani, | 10 Do not remove an ancient landmark or enter the fields of the fatherless; |
| 11 perché il loro vendicatore è potente e difenderà la loro causa contro di te. | 11 for their Redeemer is strong; he will plead their cause against you. |
| 12 Applica il tuo cuore alla disciplina e le tue orecchie alle parole della scienza. | 12 Apply your mind to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge. |
| 13 Non risparmiare la correzione al fanciullo; anche se lo batti con la verga, non morirà; | 13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. |
| 14 anzi, battendolo con la verga, libererai la sua anima dallo Sheol. | 14 If you beat him with the rod you will save his life from Sheol. |
| 15 Figlio mio, se il tuo cuore sarà saggio anche il mio cuore ne godrà; | 15 My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad. |
| 16 le mie viscere esulteranno, se le tue labbra diranno cose rette. | 16 My soul will rejoice when your lips speak what is right. |
| 17 Il tuo cuore non abbia invidia per i peccatori; ma temi Jahvè in ogni tempo, | 17 Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the LORD all the day. |
| 18 perché ne avrai premio e la tua speranza non resterà delusa. | 18 Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off. |
| 19 Ascolta, figlio mio, e sii saggio; indirizza il tuo cuore sulla via retta! | 19 Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your mind in the way. |
| 20 Non andare tra i bevitori di vino né con i ghiotti mangiatori di carne, | 20 Be not among winebibbers, or among gluttonous eaters of meat; |
| 21 perché il bevitore e il ghiottone impoveriscono e il dormiglione veste di stracci. | 21 for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags. |
| 22 Ascolta duo padre: ti ha generato; non disprezzare tua madre, poi è invecchiata. | 22 Hearken to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old. |
| 23 Compera il vero bene è non venderlo, la sapienza e l'istruzione e la prudenza. | 23 Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. |
| 24 Il padre del giusto sarà ben lieto e chi avrà generato un saggio godrà di lui. | 24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who begets a wise son will be glad in him. |
| 25 Si rallegrino tuo padre e tua madre e gioisca colei che ti ha generato! | 25 Let your father and mother be glad, let her who bore you rejoice. |
| 26 Figlio mio, dammi il tuo cuore e piacciano ai tuoi occhi le mie vie; | 26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. |
| 27 perché la prostituta è una fossa profonda e la straniera un pozzo angusto! | 27 For a harlot is a deep pit; an adventures is a narrow well. |
| 28 Essa sta in agguato, come un ladro, e accresce il numero dei malvagi! | 28 She lies in wait like a robber and increases the faithless among men. |
| 29 A chi i guai? a chi le liti? a chi le querele? a chi percosse per niente: a chi gli occhi iniettati di sangue? | 29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? |
| 30 A coloro che fanno tardi accanto al vino e che vanno cercando i liquori. | 30 Those who tarry long over wine, those who go to try mixed wine. |
| 31 Non fissare il vino quando rosseggia, quando scintilla nella coppa e va giù dolcemente. | 31 Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. |
| 32 Alla fine esso morde come un serpente e punge come un aspide. | 32 At the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder. |
| 33 Allora i tuoi occhi vedono cose strane e il tuo cuore dirà cose perverse; | 33 Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind utter perverse things. |
| 34 e tu sarai come chi dorme in mezzo al mare o come uno che dorme sull’albero di una nave. | 34 You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast. |
| 35 «Mi hanno battuto e non ho sentito; mi hanno percosso, non me ne sono accorto; quando mi sveglierò? Cercherò dell’altro vino». | 35 "They struck me," you will say, "but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I will seek another drink." |
