| 9 Udì dunque le dure parole che il popolo aveva rivolto al capo perchè la cittadinanza si era lasciata prendere dallo scoraggiamento a causa della scarsità dell’acqua. Giuditta riseppe anche tutto il discorso che Ozia aveva tenuto al popolo, come cioè aveva giurato a esso di consegnare, entro cinque giorni, la città agli Assiri. | 9 And so, when she heard that Uzziah had promised that he would hand over the city with the passing of five days, she sent to the elders Chabris and Charmis. |

| 11 Quelli vennero da lei ed essa disse loro: « Ascoltatemi, capi degli abitanti di Betulia! Non è opportuno il discorso che avete fatto in questo giorno innanzi al popolo; inoltre avete interposto quel giuramento, che avete pronunciato tra Dio e voi, e avete detto di consegnare la città ai nostri nemici, se entro cinque giorni il Signore non vi porti aiuto. | 11 And who are you to test the Lord? |
| 12 Ora, chi siete voi perchè tentiate oggi Dio e vi mettiate al disopra di Dio in mezzo ai figli degli uomini? | 12 This is not a word that will provoke mercy, but rather one that may excite wrath and enkindle fury. |
| 13 Fate pure indagini sul Signore onnipotente, ma non ne comprenderete nulla per tutta la vita. | 13 You have set a time limit for the mercy of the Lord, and you have established a day for him, according to your choice. |
| 14 Voi non sonderete la profondità del cuore dell’uomo nè afferrerete i ragionamenti della sua mente e, allora, come riuscirete a scrutare Dio che ha fatto tutto ciò> Come conoscerete la sua mente, come comprenderete il suo pensiero? No, fratelli, non fate mai sdegnare il Signore nostro Dio! | 14 But, since the Lord is patient, let us be repentant about this same matter, and let us beg his indulgence with many tears. |
| 15 Perchè se egli non volesse venire in nostro aiuto entro cinque giorni, egli ha il potere di difenderci, ma anche di distruggerci sotto gli occhi dei nostri nemici nei giorni che vuole. | 15 For God will not threaten like man, nor will he be inflamed to anger like a son of man. |
| 16 Voi, pertanto non ipotecate le decisioni del Signore nostro Dio, poichè Dio non è come un uomo, cui si fanno minacce, nè come un qualunque figlio di uomo cui si detti una linea di condotta. | 16 And, for this reason, let us humble our souls before him, and, continuing to serve him in a spirit of humility, |
| 17 Perciò attendendo la salvezza che ci viene da lui, invochiamolo in nostro aiuto: ascolterà la nostra voce, se a lui piacerà. | 17 let us speak to the Lord with tears, so that he may act according to his will in his mercy toward us. So then, just as our heart is disturbed by their arrogance, so also may we glory in our humility. |
| 18 Poichè non c’è stata nella nostra età, nè c’è tra noi al giorno d’oggi tribù nè famiglia nè villaggio nè città che adorino divinità fatte dalle mani come è avvenuto in tempi precedenti; | 18 For we have not followed the sins of our fathers, who abandoned their God in order to worship strange gods. |
| 19 motivo per cui i nostri padri furono consegnati alla spada e al saccheggio e caddero con grandi disastri innanzi ai nostri nemici. | 19 Because of this crime, they were given over to their enemies: to the sword, and to pillaging, and to confusion. But we know no other God except him. |
| 20 Noi, invece, non conosciamo altro Dio che lui: onde spruamo che egli non abbandoni noi nè quelli della nostra stirpe. | 20 Let us wait with humility for his consolation, and the Lord our God will requite our blood by the afflictions of our enemies, and he will humble all the nations that will rise up against us, and he will cause them to be without honor. |
| 21 Poichè se saremo presi noi, sarà presa anche tutta la Giudea e le nostre cose sacre saranno saccheggiate: egli vendicherà la loro profanazione con il nostro sangue. | 21 And now, brothers, because you are the elders among the people of God, and their very soul hangs upon you, rescue their hearts by your eloquence, so that they may remember that our fathers were tested in order to prove whether or not they truly worshiped their God. |

| 24 Perciò, fratelli, diamo prova ai nostri fratelli che da noi dipende la loro vita e che le cose sacre, il tempio e l’altare hanno trovato in noi un sostegno. | 24 But those who did not accept the trials with the fear of the Lord, and who brought forward their impatience and the disgrace of their murmuring against the Lord, |
| 25 Per tutti questi motivi ringraziamo piuttosto il Signore nostro Dio che prova noi come i nostri padri. | 25 were exterminated by the exterminator, and they perished by serpents. |

| 28 Ozia le rispose: « Tutto ciò che hai detto lo hai pronunciato con cuore retto e nessuno contraddirà le tue parole; | 28 And Uzziah and the elders said to her: “All the things that you have spoken are true, and there is nothing reprehensible in your words. |
| 29 poichè non è solo oggi che appare chiara la tua saggezza, ma fino dall’inizio dei tuoi giorni tutto il popolo ha riconosciuto la tua intelligenza, perchè buona è la formazione del tuo animo. | 29 Now, therefore, pray for us, because you are a holy woman, and one fearing God.” |
| 30 Ma il popolo soffre tragicamente la sete e ci ha costretto a fare come gli abbiamo detto e a prenderci la responsabilità di un giuramento che non trasgrediremo. | 30 And Judith said to them: “You know that what I have been able to say is of God. |
| 31 Ora, quindi, poichè tu sei una donna pia, prega per noi e il Signore manderà la pioggia per riempire le nostre cisterne e noi non verremo meno ». | 31 So, concerning that which I propose to do, examine whether or not it is from God, and pray that God may act to strengthen my plan. |
| 32 Rispose loro Giuditta: « Ascoltatemi! Compirò un gesto che attraverso la storia giungerà ai figli della nostra stirpe: | 32 You will stand at the gate this night, and I will go forth with my handmaid. And pray that, just as you have said, within five days the Lord may look kindly on his people Israel. |
| 33 voi questa notte vi fermerete sulla porta e io uscirò con la mia schiava e proprio nei giorni, dopo i quali vi siete impegnati a consegnare la città ai nostri nemici, il Signore, per mano mia, porterà aiuto a Israele. | 33 But I am not willing to have you examine my actions, and, until I report to you, let nothing else be done, except to pray for me to the Lord our God.” |
| 34 Voi, poi, non state a indagare sulla mia azione. Non vi manifesterò nulla finchè non sarà effettuato ciò che intendo fare ». | 34 And Uzziah, the leader of Judah, said to her, “Go in peace, and may the Lord be with you to take revenge among our enemies.” So, turning back, they departed. |
| 35 Ozia e i capi le dissero: « Va’ in pace! Il Signore Dio sia con te per fare vendetta dei nostri nemici! ». | |
| 36 Ritiratisi dalla tenda, ritornarono ai loro posti. | |
